Singles

Our pop queen, Kylie Minogue debuts at No.1 with 2 Hearts, knocking The Veronicas’ Hook Me Up down to No.4 this week. Not budging from No.2 is The Way I Are by Timbaland, meanwhile his follow-up track Apologize shoots up six places to rest at No.3. Ricki-Lee debuts at No.5 with Love Is All Around and again at No.6 this week is Santana’s Into The Night. As for the bottom four, they have all slipped a few places. A special mention this week goes out to Sydney DJs - The Potbelleez who are bubbling just outside the Top 10 at No.14, up from No.25 with Don’t Hold Back.

 

2 HEARTS - Kylie Minogue No.1

Pint sized beauty, Kylie Minogue makes her popalicous return to the ARIA Singles chart after a two year absence. 2 Hearts is the first single to be lifted from Minogue’s tenth studio album, aptly titled X and is her tenth No.1 single too. Previous chart topping singles include I Should Be So Lucky (Feb. ’88), Slow (Nov. ’03) and On A Night Like This (Sep. ’00). Minogue has enjoyed a career that has spanned over three decades and has since gone on to become an icon in the entertainment industry. Here’s to another twenty years in showbiz!

 

LOVE IS ALL AROUND - Ricki-Lee

No.5

The newly married starlet Ricki-Lee, releases her second single to be taken from her current album, Brand New Day (No.37 Aug. ’07). Love Is All Around follows Can’t Touch It, which peaked at No.2 in August this year and is also Ricki-Lee’s highest charting single to date. Ricki-Lee was also a member of the Young Divas, but she decided to leave the group to focus on her solo career.

 

CLUMSY - Fergie No.12

She’s Fergalicious (#4 Jan. ’07) and you all know her by her stage name, Fergie. Born Stacy Ann Ferguson on March 27, 1975, Fergie has been in the spotlight from a young age, kick starting her career in 80’s TV program – Kids Incorporated. Fast forward to 2003 and Fergie took the reins as lead female vocalist for Black Eyed Peas. After two very successful albums with the group, Fergie set out for a solo project and it paid off! Clumsy is the fifth Top 50 single to be lifted off her former No.1 album The Dutchess (July ’07).

 

ME LOVE - Sean Kingston No.28

This is the first of two appearances Sean Kingston makes in this week’s chartifacts. Kingston is also featured on Fergie’s second new entry – Personal. The 17 year old took the world by storm earlier this year with his debut single Beautiful Girls, which spent five weeks atop of the ARIA Singles Chart earlier this year. Kingston’s self titled debut album from which the two mentioned singles are taken from peaked at No.21 in September this year.

 

SPRAY ON PANTS - Kisschasy

No.47

Formed in 2002, Aussie pop-rock band Kisschasy consists of Darren Cordeux, Joel Vanderuit, Sean Thomas and Karl Ammitzboll. They made their ARIA Chart debut with the single Do-Do's & Whoa-Oh's. The track peaked at No.25 in July 2005 and since then the band has gone from strength to strength. Follow up singles include Face Without A Name (No.41 Oct. ’05), The Shake (No.25 Mar. ’06) and their highest charting single to date – Opinions Won’t Keep You Warm At Night (No.10 June ’07).

 

PERSONAL - Fergie Feat. Sean Kingston No.49

Debuting for a second time this week is Fergie. Clumsy follows previous single releases Glamorous (No.2 May ’07) and London Bridge (No.3 Sep. ’06). Also on her list of accomplishments, Fergie has a burgeoning acting career and has won a swag of awards including Best Female Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards and American Music Awards.

 

DO IT - Nelly Furtado No.66

Resurfacing in the middle of 2006 after a two year hiatus from our charts, Nelly Furtado came back bigger and better! Promiscuous was the first single release off Furtado’s current album Loose (No.4 Aug. ’06). The single peaked at No.2 in July 2006 and spent twelve weeks inside the Top 10. Next up was Maneater (No.3 Nov. ’06), followed by Say It Right (No.2 Jan. ’07) and All Good Things (Come To An End) (No.12 June ’07).

 

WON'T GO HOME WITHOUT YOU - Maroon 5 No.69

Californian band, Maroon 5 debuted on the ARIA Charts four years ago with the single, Harder To Breathe. The single peaked at No.37 in October 2003 and opened the door to new found fame for the band. After taking a well earned two year break from the spotlight, Maroon 5 came storming back this year. First single up was Makes Me Wonder, which peaked at No.6 in May this year, then Wake Up Call (No.19 Sep. ’07). Won’t Go Home Without You is lifted from It Won’t Be Soon Before Long (No.5 June ’07).

 

GOOD LIFE - Kanye West No.74

Rapper and producer, Kanye West is currently grieving due to the passing of his mother – Donda West. Condolences from fans all over the world have been posted on networking and fan sites to the mourning star. Good Life is the second single to be lifted from West’s latest album Graduation (No.2 Sep. ’07) and features fellow rapper T-Pain. The first single to be taken from the album was Stronger, which peaked at No.2 earlier this year.

 

ARE YOU THE ONE? - The Presets No.88

Sydneysiders Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes are electronic music duo, The Presets. The duo has worked with the likes of Silverchair, The Dissociatives and The Sleepy Jackson. Are You The One? is The Presets’ debut to the ARIA Singles Chart and can be found on the album Beams (No.68 Sep. ’05) Their previous release, Girl & The Sea EP failed to make an impact on the ARIA charts, but was critically acclaimed by reviewers.

 

Albums

The top 10 is full of newies this week! Debuting at No.1 is the Spice Girls with their Greatest Hits album, which bumped the Eagles off to No.2 with their album Long Road Out Of Eden. No.3 is another debut – The Memphis Album by Guy Sebastian. Moving down to No.4 is Delta while moving up from No.8 to No.5 is Timbaland Presents: Shock Value by Timbaland. No.6 and No.8 are two more debuts – Sawdust by The Killers and Mothership by Led Zeppelin respectively, with The Veronicas’ Hook Me Up sitting in between at No.7. From No.5 to No.9 is Timberlake’s Future Sex / Love Sounds and rounding it off at No.10 is The Swing Sessions by David Campbell.

 

GREATEST HITS - Spice Girls No.1

Clearly these Girls need no introduction! The five Girls from the UK announced at the end of June that they were re-forming to go on a world tour, release a greatest hits album and a documentary. This is the girls fourth album and the only one to reach No.1. Their first album, Spice (No.3 Apr. ’97) went 6x platinum. Spiceworld reached No.2 in December 1997 and was also accredited 6x platinum. While their third album Forever (No.9 Nov. ’00) went gold.

 

THE MEMPHIS ALBUM - Guy Sebastian No.3

After his recent fantastic performance on Australian Idol, as well as all of his previous albums charting in the top 5, it’s no surprise that this album has hit No.3 in its debut week. For this album, Sebastian went to Memphis and recorded a selection of soul and Motown hits. Included on the album are the tracks In The Midnight Hour, Take Me To The River, Hold On I’m Coming and Under The Boardwalk among many others. Sebastian’s first album, Just As I Am debuted at No.1 (where it stayed for four weeks) in December, 2003. His next album, Beautiful Life (No.2 Oct. ’04) was followed by Closer To The Sun (No.4 Nov. ’06).

 

SAWDUST - The Killers No.6

This is the band’s third album, and third album to have charted in the top 10. The band consists of Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums, percussion) who all hail from Las Vegas, Nevada. Their previous two albums are Hot Fuss (No.1 Feb. ’05) and Sam’s Town (No.2 Oct. ’06), both of which were accredited with platinum sales.

 

MOTHERSHIP - Led Zeppelin No.8

Recently the band have been in secret rehearsals to see if they were still able to play together and have now subsequently announced a reunion gig in London. Jason Bonham, the son of the late John Bonham is playing the drums for this concert. This album is a greatest hits collection. Recent compilation albums or re-released albums pf theirs include Remasters (No.9 Oct. ’97), The Complete Collection (No.46 Dec. ’90) and How The West Was Won (No.10 June ’03).

 

TAKING CHANCES - Celine Dion No.12

Love her or hate her, Dion has an impressive album chart history which confirms her popularity over the past fifteen years! Only looking at her albums that have charted exceptionally well, leaves us with a list including; Celine Dion (No.15 Sep. ’92), The Colour Of My Love (No.1 May ’95), Falling Into You (No.1 Mar. ’96), Let’s Talk About Love (No.1 Nov. ’97), These Are Special Times (No.6 Dec. ’98), All The Way… A Decade Of Song (No.1 Dec. ’99), A New Day Has Come (No.1 Apr. ’02), One Heart (No.6 May ’03) and Miracle (No.15 Nov. ’04).

 

THREE'S A CROWD - Matt Tilley No.14

Tilley is a Melbourne comedian who is a presenter on the Melbourne radio station, FOX FM. You may have also seen him on the show Thank God You’re Here. Three’s A Crowd is a collection from a segment on his radio show – Gotcha – where people organise Tilley to make prank calls on their friends and families. This is the third release from this segment, the first was Cereal Pest (No.12 Nov. ’05) and the second was Cereal Pest: The Gotcha Calls (No.4 Oct. ’06). The proceeds of this album are being donated to The Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne.

 

AS I AM - Alicia Keys No.15

This is the third studio album for Keys. On this album she has collaborated with John Mayer and John Legend. A New York native, Keys first album was Songs In A Minor which reached No.3 in March 2002 and was accredited with double platinum sales. Her follow up album, The Diary Of Alicia Keys reached No.22 in January 2005. Keys released a recording of her performance on MTV titled Unplugged which reached No.33 in October 2005.

 

THE ULTIMATE HITS - Garth Brooks No.25

In 2001 Brooks officially retired from recording and performing, as he struggled to keep a balance between family and work commitments. This year, he has briefly come out of retirement for a few performances with his wife Trisha Yearwood, and has promised his fans he will be back once his children graduate from high school. He has been credited with bringing country music to a larger audience by fusing rock and country and his album chart history attests to this; In Pieces (No.1 Aug. ’94), The Hits (No.2 Apr. ’95) and Fresh Horses (No.5 Nov. ’95) among others.

 

YES YES VINDICTIVE - Operator Please No.28

This band is a bunch of high school kids from the Gold Coast, who were put together by lead singer Amandah Wilkinson for a band competition (which they won) in 2005. The rest of the band includes Tim Commandeur (drums), Sarah Gardiner (keyboards), Ashley McConnell (bass) and Taylor Henderson (violin). They won an ARIA award this year for their song - Just A Song About Ping Pong (No.12 Aug. ’07).

 

CHAOS AND BRIGHT LIGHTS - The McClymonts No.37

This is the debut album from sisters – Brooke (guitar), Samantha (bass) and Mollie McClymont (mandolin) from Grafton, NSW. They spent last year touring right across Australia and supporting Lee Kernaghan as well as performing in the middle east at Christmas in 2006. This album also reached No.2 on the Country charts this week.

 

BACK HOME - Westlife No.47

Nearly ten years since the boys formed in Ireland, they have now released their ninth album. This album contains nine new tracks and three covers including Michael Buble’s Home and Have You Ever by Diane Warren. One of the producers on this album is Steve Mac who has also worked with Ronan Keating and Il Divo. Previous albums they have released include Westlife (No.15 Nov. ’99), Face To Face (No.1 Mar. ’06) and The Love Album (No.11 Nov. ’06).

 

PNAU - Pnau No.81

Pnau is Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes. In 2000 they won an ARIA Award for Best Dance Release. Their previous releases include the album Sambanova (No.39 Jun. ’00) and the singles Follow Me (No.65 Aug. ’01) and Una Noche (Get Up) (No.54 Mar. ’03).
