Posted November 29, 200717 yr Takeone News Maroon 5 Songs About Jane By Josh Albrecht Maroon 5 wastes no time slapping you in the face with strong vocals and beats on their album “Songs about Jane.” That's because the first song on the album is their hit “Harder to Breathe,” which has spent many weeks on the popular music lists. “Harder to Breathe,” is a song that is infused with a catchy chorus. But what makes the song unique is the drum beat that actually is carrying the song while you are thinking that it's the strong guitar licks pounding their way through. Then, immediately, the group shifts the CD into a slower mode with their second release in “This Love.” “Love” is hesitant at being a great song, but good enough to make you want to listen again. Already after the first two songs you are hooked by Maroon 5 and their ability to take you on a ride of peaks and valleys. While “Harder to Breathe” kicks the album off with an up- beat sound, Maroon 5 brings things down on the fourth song with “She will be loved.” A smooth love song, “She Will be Loved” is comprised of elegant lyrics like “I want to make you feel beautiful,” and “I know that goodbye means nothing at all.” The strong lyrics and music effects in this song make it the best one on the album despite it not necessarily being “profitable” enough to be released as a single. “Songs about Jane,” continues a solid path through the peaks and valleys for the rest of the album. The peaks coming in the songs “Must Get Out,” and then again in “Not Coming Home,” and “Sweetest Goodbye.” As for what the band sounds like, they are a blend of rock and funk and a dash of soul that has a hint of John Mayer, whom they have played with. Refreshingly though, Maroon 5 is a unique band that doesn't conjure up images of a previous band as you listen to their album; although, their website gives you bands like Weezer and Nada Surf to think about as influences. But the biggest influence has to be whoever “Jane” is as most of the songs have a theme of relationships that drip with emotion. Maroon 5's album “Songs about Jane” is unique and engaging and should not be missed. Grade: A
