Such an amazing & underrated synth-pop group especially when you compare them to the Pet Shop Boys, New Order, & the Human League. They're never heralded enough in my opinion. :(

And they made some of the best gay pop music ever.

The singles from the first 3 albums are mostly amazing but I have to go with Hit That Perfect Beat: still sounds contemporary even to this day. Excellence.

They had a run of really fantastic pop singles.... Why is possibly my favourite... closely followed by Perfect Beat and their hilariously OTT collaboration with Eartha Kitt, Cha Cha Heels.

I hate Jimmy Somerville's projects after Bronski, though... especially the Communards. Some of his solo stuff is great, however.

It's because of the fact that Communards always relied on covers of fabulous songs that didn't need to be covered: I.E. anyone who prefers their versions of Don't Leave Me This Way & Never Can Say Goodbye over the originals have got to be mad!

Is Yazoo technically your favorite synth-pop duo/group ever? There are many a night where I still dance to Situation & Only You. :yahoo: (Most approriate smiley for them. :D ).

I think Yazoo defined a genre with their stuff - 2 of the best albums of the 80s and a quality of output Vince Clarke just wasn't able to reach with Erasure, not ever, IMO. Only You and Don't Go were, IMO, the 2 best singles of the 1980s.

Plus, I think Moyet has the best female voice around, and the marrying of her velvery bluesy voice with the metallic synth sound.... aural heaven I thought.

Saying that, though, I loved Yazoo's darker moments - Winter Kills, Mr Blue, Ode to Boy... delicious.

There were rumours of a reunion, as it's now 25 years since Upstairs at Eric's..... but new albums by both of them got in the way :(

re. Communards... I loved For A Friend, but, yes, those cover versions were ghastly.

Trivia.... the guy who took over from Somerville in Bronski Beat is a close mate of Alison Moyet's :)

Wicked - I could picture her singing some of Bronski's singles - especially Why? - beautifully suited for that voice of hers.

I also agree that Upstairs At Eric's was a landmark album in the synth-pop revolution. Not the first of it's kind, but definitely set the trend for how the rest of the '80s would run.

I think I prefer You & Me Both though. So many classics on there & it's one of the top 3 best albums that both Alison & Vince have done - Ode To Boy, Walk Away From Love, & Mr. Blue don't sound dated whatsoever & still sound great on the CD player. :D

I'd start a Yazoo thread - but Buzzjack hates anything Moyet-connected

I agree about YAMB - it's a better album - Ode to Boy is a classic record, I think. Moyet sang Mr Blue on her recent tour, actually..... first time she's ever done it live - sounded wonderful, too, and even more poignant these days, the lyrics. It's on her last live DVD One Blue Voice (I think).

they were not my cuppa tbh, didnt like them except for 'smalltown boy' which was superb. i like records that portray an emotion and this track for me demonstrates the pain of a young gay man superbly.

Can't vote on this as I don't think they had one.

Just couldn't stand Jimmy Somerville's prancing around or his squeally voice.

omg there's like so much you can say with that grouping esp in consideration to the indie/alternative section and the positioning of goldfrapp, and also q magazine (nearly seen below)
