Posted December 4, 200717 yr :cheer: out for general release this week, based on Phillip Pullman's novel 'Northern Lights', I've read the novel, so I hope the film doesn't stray that much from the book. The trailers look fooking awesome :w00t: much excite, I definitely be watching this. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b6/The_Golden_Compass.jpg/200px-The_Golden_Compass.jpg Cast Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra Belacqua, who embarks on a voyage to battle the forces of evil and rescue her best friend. New Line Cinema announced 12-year-old Richards' casting in June 2006. She had attended an open audition after watching a stage production of The Golden Compass, and was picked from 10,000 girls who auditioned, for what will be her first acting job. Nicole Kidman as Marisa Coulter, the villain of the film. Kidman was author Phillip Pullman's preferred choice for the role ten years before production of the film, and despite initially rejecting the offer to star as she didn't want to play a villain, she signed on after receiving a personal letter from Pullman. Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel, Lyra's ruthless and mysterious adventurer uncle. Ian McKellen as the voice of Iorek Byrnison, an armoured bear who becomes Lyra's friend and comrade. Nonso Anozie had recorded lines for the part of Iorek Byrnison, but was replaced by McKellen at a late stage as New Line wanted a bigger name in the role. New Line president of production Toby Emmerich admitted he "never thought [Anozie] sounded like Iorek" and while he initially trusted director Weitz's casting decision, he "never stopped thinking that this guy didn't sound right." The recasting was against Weitz's wishes, though he later said "if you're going to have anyone recast in your movie, you're happy it's Ian McKellen." Ian McShane as the voice of Ragnar Sturlusson, the amoured bear king. Ragnar's name in the book was Iofur Raknison, but the name has been changed to prevent confusion between him and Iorek. Sam Elliott as Lee Scoresby, a Texan "aeronaut" who comes to Lyra's aid. Eva Green as Serafina Pekkala, a queen of the witches. Freddie Highmore as the voice of Pantalaimon, Lyra's dæmon. Ben Walker as Roger Parslow, Lyra's best friend, who is kidnapped and taken North. Claire Higgens as Ma Costa, member of a Gyptian family which aids Lyra. Jim Carter as John Faa, the king of the Gyptians. Tom Courtenay as Farder Coram, Gyptian second-in-command and advisor to John Faa. Kathy Bates as the voice of Hester, Lee Scoresby's Dæmon. Kristen Scott Thomas as the voice of Stelmaria, Lord Asriel's Dæmon. Jack Shepherd as Master of Jordan College. Simon McBurney as Fra Pavel. Magda Szubanski as Mrs. Lonsdale. Christopher Lee as the Magisterium's First High Councilor. Lee's casting was also at New Line's behest, rather than that of Chris Weitz. Derek Jacobi as the Magisterial Emissary.
December 5, 200717 yr ...plus Kate Bush's beautiful theme music... I read they've omitted the final part of Northern Lights...and will begin the second movie, if it's made, with the closing, pretty eventful, chapter of Northern Lights. It's a helluva challenge to translate such a marvellous book to the screen - I so, so hope they do it justice.
December 6, 200717 yr Author Seen it, its awesome, I regard it as one of my all time favourite films, its a shame Daniel Craig is not in the film that much, but overall its well scripted and great effects, anyone that goes to watch it you definitely be amazed. 10/10
December 6, 200717 yr Not getting that good of reviews. I will judge it when I see it this Friday. The omission of the last chapter is a bit dissapointing, but we'll see if they make it work. I really hope it does it some justice. I'm not one of those book nazi's who think that the movies need to be exactly like the books their based off of (much better with some changes imo), I just want it to portray the themes in the book well. :(
December 6, 200717 yr OMGz I well just got back from seeing The Golden Compass and it was well AMAZE tbf. Apart from that annoying CHILD with his teeth the size of INIFINITY. And the polar bears were ridiculously scary and eeeee it's just well good. And that "Lord Farr" character is bufftingALING even though he looks an obese 189 year old version of that Sparrow dude. 'MMENSNESS <33. I haven't read the book yet BUTTTTT I've bought the series for my little sister for Xmas so I'ma have a butchers! I bet the book's LIGHTYEARS BETTER OOO:
December 8, 200717 yr it was well good!! my mate said it wasn't as good as she thought it would be and they missed alot from the book...so may have to read it too :o ^_^
December 9, 200717 yr I love this! I went with a impression it was going to be so kiddy but it really was really good!
December 9, 200717 yr :| I am shocked to see the reaction... It was absolutely terrible. They completely butchered the book, I would say most of it has has been cut, the flow was dreadful - scenes were skipped, it was all incredibly rushed, the acting from the children in particular was poor. It's such a shame Nicole was attached to this. They have ruined a perfectly good book, and the fact it has flopped in the US means they won't be making the sequel. Wasn't such a good idea to ruin the ending was it? Gutted.
December 10, 200717 yr How did they ruin the ending!? Everyone's been saying that! I haven't read the book yet and I won't be able to til after Xmas so I well want to know haha :(.
December 10, 200717 yr They cut out the last few chapters of the book and made it the start of the second movie. Still thought it was great even though it's not doing as well as hoped.
December 12, 200717 yr I love Pullman's books, I thoroughly DETEST this film.... More unctious American garbage p***ing on a great BRITISH author.... So much of the book hacked out, many important, integral elements either dumbed down or missed out completely in the obsession to churn out a film that's under two hours... What a bleedin' insult, as if Pullman's typical readers have the attention spans of braindead goldfish... . This excellent series of books has been given nothing like the respect given to Tolkien or Rowling, and that is just utterly detestable IMO.... In the hands of someone like Peter Jackson, Ang Lee or, heck, Steven Spielberg , this would have been an absolutely marvellous film, but nope, they give it to the sodding producer of "American Pie 2" and "American Wedding".....   Good one......NOT!!!!! 2/10, what should have been one of the best films of the year has turned out to be one of the absolute worst..... Still, not quite as sh!t as "The Seeker, The Dark Is Rising"......
December 12, 200717 yr I saw it yesterday. Thought it was ok but not as magical as I expected it too be. I don't know what it was but there was no sort of spark in the film. The effects are amazing but it did drag a bit. There has to be a sequel made otherwise this film would have been a waste.
December 13, 200717 yr All of my friends said that it was extremely weird, and they lauged at it the whole time.
December 13, 200717 yr But it was worth watching...right?? If you've never read the books, yes.... If you have, avoid like the plague....
December 13, 200717 yr I wouldn't see it again personally. It was good but just a bit meh, the best thing about it was the poly woly bears! <333 I'm on a mission to read the book. It sounds well orgazmiczzzz.
