Posted May 17, 200619 yr Well there has been six years of music so far but who do you think has been the most influential to what's around at the moment? I think it's one of two bands but take one out and things wouldn't be the same as they are now: The Strokes - I don't like them THAT much personally but they were a breath of fresh air when they came out and they got rid of Limp Bizkit and probably turned the Indie scene into what it is right now. The Libertines - I'm not being biased but there are a HUGE of bands around today that are influenced by them and when you go to gigs in London you do come across A LOT of Libertines rip-offs, they f*cked it all up, yes but as I think I've already said in here before I think the Arctic Monkeys are doing what they couldn't do in a kind of Stone Roses to Oasis type thing. ;) The White Stripes would also be up there (them and The Libertines had the most impact on me) for the same reason as The Strokes and Jack White is probably imo the best guitarist so far this century too. People might say Coldplay but as much as they've been the biggest apart from maybe Keane breaking through have they had that much an influential impact? (yet) So what do you al think?
May 17, 200619 yr The Libertines would have been nothing without Nick Cave, Gallon Drunk, The Tindersticks and literally loads of other bands that they shamelessly ripped off The Strokes are nothing but a bunch of New York Dolls/Lou Reed & VU/Television rip-off artists whose albums even sound like they're from the 70s as well..... And it wasn't them who got rid of Limp Bizkit, it was Slipknot and the return to real metal which wasn't dull, generic slop.... The White Stripes I have a lot of time for, but again, they're borrowing heavily from early 90s Underground/Lo Fi acts such as Royal Trux, Boss Hogg, Sebadoh, John Spencer Blues Explosion, etc; and Jack's other band, The Raconteurs sound a lot like Pixies.... Important acts of the 00s for me are - System of a Down - redefining Punk and Metal in a way that very few bands have the talent or capability for. Their utilisation of Armenian folk music into their sound and their intelligence and political consciousness was something that was refreshing and exciting after years of apathy. Even Green Day have got a political conscience now.... Slipknot - Giving Nu-Metal the bloody good kick up the arse that it needed after rubbish such as Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, and turning on the Nu-Metal kids to the more extreme sounds of bands like Slayer, Emperor, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, etc and putting the 'heavy' back into Metal again.... Mars Volta - Simply one of the most creative, unique and diverse talents out there. Taking ideas from Prog rock, Punk, Latino and Jazz and seriously mixing things up.... The Flaming Lips - As incredible as this may sound, these guys have been around since 1983!! Wayne Coyne formed this band with Johnathan Donoghue, but he went off to form Mercury Rev (another truly great band..). FL have never sounded so vital as they do now, and the list of bands that have been influenced by Flaming Lips would probably stretch to the moon and back.... Genius.... Coheed and Cambria - Wonderful, barmy Acid Metal madness - think King Crimson in a fight with At The Drive In and Led Zeppelin.....

Genius.... yeah mercury rev / flaming lips are cool. dont know much early stuff though. however in uncut there is a thing about great albums this month its yerself is steam by mercury rev or sumpthing like that. never heard of it before
May 17, 200619 yr Well in terms of influencing bands to start its got to be The Strokes or Coldplay, as they've influenced bands like Keane and The Arctic Monkeys etc.
May 17, 200619 yr The Libertines - I'm not being biased but there are a HUGE of bands around today that are influenced by them and when you go to gigs in London you do come across A LOT of Libertines rip-offs, they f*cked it all up, yes but as I think I've already said in here before I think the Arctic Monkeys are doing what they couldn't do in a kind of Stone Roses to Oasis type thing. ;) well suppose they are/were the head/mainband of the whole 'urchin rock' scene
May 17, 200619 yr Well in terms of influencing bands to start its got to be The Strokes or Coldplay But they in themselves are incredibly derivitive, Strokes just rip-off New York Dolls, Television, VU, etc, Coldplay are just crappy AOR and a second-rate U2/REM....
May 17, 200619 yr But they in themselves are incredibly derivitive, Strokes just rip-off New York Dolls, Television, VU, etc, Coldplay are just crappy AOR and a second-rate U2/REM.... VU?!?!?!? who the hell?
May 17, 200619 yr Velvet Underground of course.... Arctic Monkeys are influenced more by the Streets than The Strokes I'm afraid...and not hugely by either. The most influential has probably NOT been someone in mainstream indie but someone like Danger Mouse who's making bands think a bit harder about what they're doing. Ok, so he's only been around since 2004, and there are others...I can't be bothered thinking just now. Coldplay's success in playing Beverley Craven style piano for half their songs and ripping off Echo & the Bunnymen for the other half only influenced Embrace and Athlete's record labels to tell them "sound like this...now...or you're dropped".
May 17, 200619 yr Coldplay's success in playing Beverley Craven style piano for half their songs and ripping off Echo & the Bunnymen for the other half only influenced Embrace and Athlete's record labels to tell them "sound like this...now...or you're dropped". Couldn't have put it better myself mate. All Coldplay and Travis have "inspired" is a depressing catalogue of boring, generic, sh!tty AOR bands.....
May 17, 200619 yr VU?!?!?!? who the hell?  VU=Velvet Underground - arguably the most influential and seminal band of all time, without them no Punk, no Indie, no Post-rock, no Lo-Fi, no Goth, no New Wave, no Britpop, no Avant-garde/experimental weird sh!t, no nuthin' really......
May 18, 200619 yr White Stripes Coldplay 2 bands who leave me colder than David Cameron on the ice cap... but undeniably important. I can't even look at White Stripes without thinking of the French and Saunders sketch these days...
May 18, 200619 yr 2 bands who leave me colder than David Cameron on the ice cap... but undeniably important. I can't even look at White Stripes without thinking of the French and Saunders sketch these days... The Poo Stripes. That was hilarious. As much as Coldplay mostly bore me senseless, they have became one of the most important bands of the century so far.
May 18, 200619 yr Oasis have influenced most of the bands. arctic monkeys, coldplay, kasabian, dirty pretty things etc all said oasis are the main influence
May 19, 200619 yr Well Oasis we're the most importand band of the 90's but i'm not really sure who is since 2000. Coldplay are definatly the biggest but definatly not the most important.
May 19, 200619 yr Oasis have influenced most of the bands. arctic monkeys Awww no...does that mean the Arctic Monkeys will never make a good album again? Is "Whatever people..." their "Definitely Maybe"? :(
May 19, 200619 yr Awww no...does that mean the Arctic Monkeys will never make a good album again? Is "Whatever people..." their "Definitely Maybe"? :( Personally, I hope they make one that is considerably better.... I was rather underwhelmed by "Whatever People..." to be honest, very average, sounded like "The Streets" with jangly guitars, but not as good a sense of humour....
May 19, 200619 yr Velvet Underground of course.... oh yeah, suppose it obvious now   (i only knew the new york dolls becuase they are on mojo this month)
May 19, 200619 yr The most influential in a critical sense...... ..I would have to say it's a band from a genre of music I'm not particularly keen on but........ .....System Of A Down have definitely "pushed the envelope" creatively more than any other act in the 21st Century so far IMHO.
