027 Los Campesinos! 'The International Tweexcore Underground' (17-01-01-02-04-06-07-12-17-21*)

I bet you twenty pounds if you knew ten years ago how pretty you'd turn out then you'd never have gotten your ears pierced...

Recent single by male/female indie band which is still on my chart. I love everything about them and everything they've ever released but I'm glad it's been left off the album. It's fabulous but the more new material, the better!

026 Interpol 'No I In Threesome' (23-12-03*)

Babe it's time we gave something new a try...

One of the highlights off this years 'Our Love To Admire' album it's Interpol at their best. It's also probably the most open and personal song they've ever done. It's only just out so has only had three weeks on my chart but should enter the new year as number one. The second song ever to top my chart without a physical release, after the Pet Shop Boys.

I found something crying, it was my soul, I fed it milk so it wouldn't grow old...

The final single from my favourite album of last year. I still love it so much and is one of my few top favourites ever. Without bothering to check I think this may have got them their highest UK chart placing though I'm not sure. Another song that probably would've done better had it been released a few weeks later though only one song has spent as long at the top as this all year so it did something right... Surprisingly, this is the highest they've ever been in my End Of Year chart. I never fully appreciated 'Trains To Brazil' and 'Made Up Love Song #43' until last year, both would probably have been top 10 had they not been in my 2005 one!

And now for this years undeserving pop flop!

She called me while you were kissing so I could hear what I was missing...

A UK #82 :( :( :( It deserved so much more. A pop masterpiece which suprisingly doesn't sample 'Sweet Dreams'. I was shocked when I first discovered that. I've heard other songs from them but none match the brilliance of this tale of cheating. And she's really fit!

I like it that way and you know it, so let's do it, do it do it real good...

And whilst we're on the subject of songs which should've done much better than they did. Swedish Indie Pop which I adored when it came out (though I believe it may have been a second release?) but not quite so much now. Still excellent though and worthy of its top 30 placing.

And on the way home it seems like a good idea to go paddling in the fountain, and that's because it is a good idea...

The first song to appear that I've placed in my top 10 favourite singles of the year, at number 5 infact. But a relatively poor chart performance means it doesn't quite make the top 20. :( I first got this song at the beginning of the year and absolutely adored it but because I played it so much that by the time it was released I was slightly tired of it. It's regrown on me now though and it's definitely one of the years best songs.

The kids all dream of making it, whatever that means...

Right from when I got the album this has been one of my favourites. I was surprised it was released as a single though, thought it would be just me that really liked it. Don't really know quite what makes me like it so much but I just can't help singing and nodding along when it's on. My fourth Christmas number one!

And you might think it's foolish, sometimes I think it's foolish...

I decided to download this without having ever heard it after seeing it at the top of Dandy's chart. And what a great decision that was. Even though it was a while ago now I still love it as much as ever and it still grows. It's the first of seven songs in my top 20 to be sung by a female and the only song that never reached my personal chart top 5, although it has spent quite a while not far from it.

So throw a party till the cops come in and bust it up, let's go North Americans...

Although I'd liked the stuff from their/his previous album it wasn't until this and subsequently everything that followed that I loved anything of theirs. I can't imagine this being for everyone but I do love it. About being confused for being British a lot of the time this reached #40 in the UK chart. A great success!

Lead you through the dancefloor, up to the dj booth, you know what to ask for, know what to ask for...

They may not be particularly original, or even particularly good but there's something about them I can't help but love. Fun and catchy, you can't help but sing along and dance. And that's enough sometimes.

Here's to all the pretty girls you're gonna meet...

A few won't like this because it's extrmely different from their usual sound; it's about as poppy as you can get. But if you forget it's them and just take it as a song it's absolutely wonderful. It should've been a mainstream hit but wasn't. Either way it's still magnificent and I love it.

Some want to kiss some want to kick you, there's not a net you couldn't slip through...

This really should have been a number one both for me and for the UK. I think this is probably their best song but for some reason didn't quite appreciate it in its full genius when it was released so isn't one of their three personal chart number ones. Their highest position on my YTD though. They really are quite excellent. There are better bands around but they really are a cut above the rest of the mainsteam indie bands around at the moment.

That's it for now. A bit bored now, been doing it for quite a while now...

I shall probably reveal the next 5 the day after boxing day, doubt I'll get time beforehand. Here's some clues for them, in no particular order...

An act who've previously topped my End Of Year chart.

An act who've previously been number two on my End Of Year Chart.

An act I'm named after (on every forum I post on apart from this one).

An act who recently appeard on 'Buzzcocks' and has funny hair.

An act who still have two more songs to come and are in contention for my album of the year.

Another song which ended up being download only. It really is fantastic and they're a superb band, it's quite a shame they've never really got anywhere here yet, well nothing beyond a cult anyway. As brilliant and catchy as rock will get.

Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home...

Their debut album 'Funeral' was brilliant, easily one of the decades best. So I was really anticipating a return. When this leaked just before last Christmas I got all excited and was right to as this song is excellent. I did go off it for a bit but I am now back to thinking it's about the best track on the album. Classic Arcade Fire which sets them above the majority of the rest.

Love is a lie which means I've been lied to...

Another comeback I was really excited about, naturally. At first I didn't like this, thought it was too similar to 'Limassol' which was my least favourite track off their debut. But after a few listens it really grew. It's by some distance the highlight of the album. Brilliantly catchy and Maximo at their best. It's a shame it;'s the only time on 'Our Earthly Pleasures' that they are.

Oh my God what have I done? All I wanted was a little fun...

When I first heard this I adored it. So much so that I said it was about their best ever, second only to 'Private Psychadelic Reel'. I don't quite like it that much now but it's still excellent. Ali Love's vocals on it are really good, so much better than anything he's done solo, and the beat is incredibly catchy. Depending on your views of dance music, this could be considered to be anything from the highest placed dance song in the countdown to the 5th highest placed.

011 Patrick Wolf 'The Magic Position' (10-04-02-03-04-07-10-12-15-17-21-28-32)

As you give your love to me, I'm gonna keep it carefully...

I'm not really a Patrick Wolf fan. His previous stuff was alright but I didn;t think any of it was particularly special. Neither were the first two singles off this album. But this is in a different league. It's brilliant, so fun, catchy and uplifting. For once I could see why his many fans on here loved him so much. It should've been a huge smash but only made UK #69 which id quite appropriate I guess for a song called 'The Magic Position'.

Oh, teenage hopes, arrive at your door, left you with nothing but they want some more...

Of my top 10 singles 7 are personal chart number ones, 2 reached number two and this is the lowest peaking, spending just the one week at number 3. That week, of course, was in August, and not in October, when everyone else jumped on the bandwagon! Not that I'm complaining - It's a rarity that stuff this good makes the UK top 10! I would be lying, of course, if I said that its appearence in the iPod advert didn't affect its performance. It did make it stick around longer taking four weeks to fall as many places!

This was my 12th favourite song of the year and also the 12th best performing song on my chart! But its consistency racks it up 570 pts and a top 10 position. Yay!
