Why is racism by blacks treated differently to racism from whites ?

Overnight the black American boxer Bernard Hopkins said in a press conference 5 times that no white man will ever win his belts as a dig towards Britain's Joe Calzaghe, no fuss was made about it, if Calzaghe had said 5 times that no black man will ever take his belts it would be the lead story on all news media, Gordon Brown would apologise to America, he would be hammered by the press as a racist and more than likely the police would be waiting for him at Heathrow when he landed from Vegas

Racism is racism whether white, black or yellow :manson: :manson:

I have to say I tend to agree.

Quite a few years ago on the Oprah show Eddie Murphy stated that he would never date a white woman ..... and then as an aside to a white female in the audience he said that he was very sorry but he thought all white women were just too ugly. The audience cheered and laughed.

Now I get the feeling that if George Clooney had mentioned finding all balck women ugly on Tv he would not get so many cheers or laughter.

Any prejudice based on colour or race is abhorant, this works both ways.

That's how it is, unfortunetley.

I do agree with you.

Is it prejudice if someone just declares a preference for a certain look? Although I think it´s not something really to be said on national TV by popular artists, everyone has its preferences, there are people who like fat, thin, tall, short women... there are people who like blondes better. I find white people usually more atractive (altough there are some exceptions) does that make me a racist?

No it doesn't make you a racist. My point was the hypocracy of the reactions to such statements.

I am sure George Clooney prefers white female but would never feel free to say so for fear of being called racist. (white, red haired females of a certain age to be precise ;))

Eddie Murphy, however, making the 'same' statements is applauded. I am not saying Eddie Murphy is racist either, he is entitled to his opinion as much as the next person.

I am not saying Bernard Hopkins' statements were racist - but am sure if said by Joe Calzaghe they would have been reported as such.

I agree actually.

I remember in Year 7, this black boy used to take the mickey out of Jewish people, he'd say all these remarks which i found completley unacceptable. He said they deserved everything they got. If i were to say that about the blacks and slavery it would be a completley different matter, not saying i'm racist because i'm not, i have got Spanish family, Indian Friends and black friends.

He also used to call me Anne Frank to him that would be used as an insult, at the time i hadn't even heard of Anne Frank, so i didn't know whether that was an insult or not. But yeah, it's alright for them to slate Jews, whites etc but if someone does it about them it's treated and taken in a completley different context.

I guess it's seen as acceptable for blacks to bash whites because blacks took so much abuse historically, treated as slaves, deprived of rights etc. - in other words people (whites) are scared to speak out say 'you can't say that' when, decades ago in the main, it used to work in vice versa. Daft, really, but I for one wouldn't take any racist comments directed at me to heart.

I think this is definatley true, for example black people can use the N word between themselves, but for a white to say it it's extremely racist.

But I think Jark's right in that it dates back historically, which shouldnt be an excuse in todays society tbh.

Bernard Hopkins is just like all boxers really - an utter egotistical tw@t.... I would say that his statements are more to do with egotism and him just being a loudmouth, steroid junkie w/anker more than actual, deliberate racism, but the comments are still unpleasant nonetheless....

Black Racism and racists should be treated with the same contempt and disgust as white racism though...

No, I don't think it's just a preference though, I think it's just the effects of the media. They always show the heroine in films as the dashing blonde, blue eyed beauty and the black/Asian/mixed race women are just extras. It's like every race goes for the "white ideal" e.g. little black children choosing the white dolls over the black ones because the "black ones are bad/ugly". I'm a black female and I hardly find myself attracted to black boys, and I think that's sad. It explains why black females are apparently the highest number of single females- society just doesn't find us attractive, so our self esteem is shot down from childhood. For example a schoolteacher's pupils were playing a board game and the play pieces were little children (2 white boys, 2 white girls and a black girl), the students (maybe 5yrs old) were arguing over who would have to settle for the black girl piece. None of them wanted her. I think most if not all the children were black (not sure).

True, plus with the racism continuing beyond slavery e.g. my dad got stopped and searched so many times whilst driving his dad's car as a teen, some of us do feel entitled. Your ancestors beat us, killed us, dragged us away from our homes less than 200yrs ago so us cussing you on comedy shows (which a few white people attend and laugh at the jokes as well) is nothing in comparison.

I HATE that word and get SICK and TIRED of some of my community saying they want to "claim" it back from white people. If racists used that word to insult us in the past, why use it? It's disgusting. Plus (no offence to white people) when black people do something and it becomes the latest craze, white people want to do it too (e.g. stupid Soulja boy t***, cornrows which Beckham/Bo Derek took credit for even though black people have been doing since forever) so they'll think it's cool, use the word and get into serious trouble.

I literally cringed at the topic title. Just call it racism, no need for the "black" part in front.

PS. "it's alright for them to slate Jews" I sort of feel jealous of Jews in a way. The Holocaust is discussed ALL the time. Memorials, movies, books, school courses, etc and no one seems to mind. Germans are still seen as evil even thought 60 yrs has passed since, yet when we bring up slavery all we get told is "get over it, it was 200yrs ago" or "the Jews got over it, you should too" even though the Jews got support from the public and monetary compensation and all we got were false promises, even though we died in greater numbers and our plight was dragged out for a much longer amount of time. I wouldn't insult a Jew, but I can understand why someone angry would.

I think this makes alot of sense. I'm not insulting what the jews went through but it is seen as something much more major than it was. For example, Stalin kileld double the people Hitler did, but noone cares, BlackSlavery is thought of as nothing these days etc. I see where you're coming from.

Really? Wow I didn't know that, I remember in Year 9 we learnt about slavery but not as much as we should have done, i really think the pain and anguish that blacks went through should be discussed more, i think because of the Propaganda (s.p), overthrowing the Weimer Republic gives it more history, if that makes sense.

And about in films and such, I hate it how they always tend to depict the bad guys as black or foreign. And the whole 'black' and 'white' thing, i don't agree with it at all. And the media doesn't help either, there always seems to be those of other colour and other religion that are took and placed on the news, in newspapers. While I hardly ever see any white people treated in such a way.

I hope that makes sense.

a very enlightening post there .. :) interesting to hear from a different angle.

im tempted to alter the title, but if it was just 'racism' then people would assume its white racism which is by far the most complained about type of racism. (both are equally as bad though )...

They are too retarded to define someone as a person so then they have to use a colour. (White/Black etc) Common sense isn’t the first thing that comes in these peoples minds.

True. Never thought of that. Sad but true.

First off oh my days Soulja Boy's amaze <3.

But yes, this topic does my head in SO much. Allow the fact that they were slaves historically, it's like the 22nd Century or something....I think they've had enough time to move on from it TBH.

THE MAIN THING ANNOYING ME AT THE MOMENT? Wyclef Jean's video for "Sweetest Girl". So basically, black immigrants in a cage ready for transportation surrounded by white people surrounding them throwing insults etc, how is THAT not racist? Lol. It's especially annoying in the fact that one of the lyrics is "Cashflow's everything around me" but, not wanting to sound racist, but I DON'T think it was white people who brought in the craze of all this pimpin hoes bling bling business haha.

And people are well annoying and protective over it. Like my white friend was telling my how I can make a brandy coloured liquid and she was just like "Basically just make....black tea." but she whispered 'black' and it was like, WHY!? Even by whispering it makes it seem more likely that she was ACTUALLY being racist, hah.

It's just like how in America, the whole month of February is black-history month, which is cool and I have no problem with that. But if we had a month called white-history month there would be so much fuss on how that is racial...which is ridiculous.

Good point actually.. Hollywood is and always was obsessed with the stereotypical white blonde female and fetishises/objectifies blondeness and whiteness to an absolute extreme.. The villains in westerns were always wearing the "black hats", the heroes always wore "white hats", so I dont think Eddie Murphy was at all being racist by expressing a preference for black women, he was merely rejecting a false ideal reinforced by white male patriarchy and Hollywood. Murphy is of that generation which would probably have still been deeply affected by racism in the US...

The word "Black" is all to often associated with negativity, conversely the word "white" is all too often associated with positivity... But I dont think changing the title of the thread would have been appropriate as it was in reference to a specific event...

Heard this argument before and still don't agree with it. The other eleven months are basically white history so if you took another month, you'd have the whole yr again. Plus America chose the shortest month out of them all. I'm sure 28/29 days out of 365/366 is nothing major.

True. :(
