Ike Turner, credited by many musicians with making the first rock and roll record, has died at his home in California aged 76.

The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.

Turner won two Grammy awards over the course of his career, which spanned more than four decades, winning the most recent award in February this year.

Although Turner recorded Rocket 88, which many fans say created the original rock and roll sound, in 1951, he was best known for his later work with then-wife Tina Turner.

Ike and Tina achieved major success in the 1960s and 1970s before their relationship dissolved amid allegations that Ike had been violent and manipulative towards his wife.

Ike later denied he had been a violent husband and claimed the media had demonised him.

A spokeswoman for Tina Turner says, "Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today.

"She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."

oh well... c'est la vie!

not overly a fan of his/her/their work at all, apart from their rendition of 'river deep, mountain high' which imho was possibly phil spectre at his very best, gloriously produced track...i love it!

While I was bought up to believe it wrong to be disrespectful to the dead I make an exception in his case, respect in death has to be earned in life and this vile wife beating cockroach deserves none for the years of using Tina as a punchbag and football

Talented musician but I hope the end was as painful as the daily beatings that Tina went through

Rot in hell Ike

I second that.

LOL at this thread topic

I echo what has been said already

Hadn't got a lot of time for him as a man, but, along with Jackie Brenston, Ike Turner was responsible for 'Rocket 88' which was released in 1951 and recorded at the legendary Sam Phillips's studio in Memphis. It's often claimed to be the "first rock and roll song".

PS, Did you know Ike was married 14 times in his lifetime!

In the 1950s Ike Turner became a recording scout and A&R man for independent record companies including Sun Records - where "Rocket 88" was recorded, helping the likes of Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James and Otis Rush get signed. He also became a sideman playing guitar for these blues acts.

In 2001, Ike Turner's long-awaited autobiography, Takin' Back My Name was released.

In Tina Turner's 1986 autobiography I, Tina, later filmed as What's Love Got to Do with It?, Tina accused Ike of violent spousal abuse, which Ike repeatedly denied for many years. However, in his 2001 autobiography Ike admitted, "Sure, I've slapped Tina... There have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her."

I think that says it all....

Like Chuck Berry, James Brown, Rick James & Michael Jackson his contribution to music should rightfully be remembered, but to equally gloss over his personal flaws would be very wrong as well.
