Posted December 16, 200717 yr Sir John Major, whose government was discredited by Labour-orchestrated sleaze allegations, has accused Tony Blair and Gordon Brown of presiding over even worse abuses. The former Conservative prime minister said that during Labour's 10 years in power, the party had become institutionally careless and problems of sleaze were now "systemic". In an interview with BBC One's Andrew Marr Show, Sir John cited as examples the recent scandal surrounding donations from property developer David Abrahams, and Bernie Ecclestone's £1 million donation to Labour in 1997. Sir John was undermined by a seemingly endless stream of sleaze allegations against Conservative MPs and ministers in the 1990s. But while he acknowledged that there had been individuals in the Tory Party who "misbehaved" in the 1990s, he said that under Labour the problems of sleaze had escalated. He compared the tactics adopted by Tony Blair, then leader of the Opposition, to the McCarthyite witch hunts against communist sympathisers in the United States in the 1950s. "What they did at the time was absolutely unscrupulous," Sir John said. "What happened in the 1990s, there was a deliberate attempt to portray the Conservative Party as an institution - it was almost McCarthyite frankly - as though it were sleazy and it wasn't. "The distinction is that sleaze has seemed to be systemic since 1997." Sir John said that Labour in power had been "institutionally careless in the grand manner". He said there was a "clear pattern" linking the row over Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone's £1 million donation to the current scandal involving David Abrahams - with "serial offences" in between. He said people would laugh if the Government now claimed to be "whiter than white" or "purer than pure", referring to Mr Blair's famous pledge after Labour was elected in 1997. Sir John also launched an attack at Gordon Brown's record as Chancellor, saying his decision to sell much of Britain's gold reserves in 1999 had lost the economy billions of pounds. He warned that the country could now be facing even bigger losses as a result of the Northern Rock collapse, which could be traced back directly to the changes to the system of financial regulation brought in by Mr Brown. December 17, 200717 yr LOL a man that was sleeping with Edwina Currie behind Norma's back is not a fit man to be lecturing on sleaze given he was even deeper in sleaze than anyone given he was leading a "back to basics" family values campaign I am a dyed in the wool tory but Major has made a complete and utter tit of himself here its like Peter Sutcliffe speaking out against Fred West and calling him evil :manson: Edited December 17, 200717 yr by Vic Vega
December 17, 200717 yr maybe if this jerk had had his head out from under Edwina Currie's frock he'd have noticed his own party dissolving into a quagmire of sleaze all those years ago. Still, stepping in to try to sort out Thatcher's abortion-like mess can't have been an easy job for anyone - especially when you've got Edwina Currie chomping at the bit as a mistress. It's kind of laughable, really - but my biggest issue with this whole malarkey is this.... SIR John Major?! Sir? Why ever is this most ridiculous of politicians a Sir? Please....
