'WONDERLAND' BOOGIES: Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" has served as inspiration for a number of songs. The most obvious is Jefferson Airplane's 1967 hit "White Rabbit." Four years earlier, Neil Sedaka had a hit single, "Alice in Wonderland," that included the lyric, "My heart goes pitter patter 'cause I'm mad as a hatter."

Now Carroll's novel is referenced in the title of the new album by Jewel. "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" (Atlantic) debuts on The Billboard 200 at No. 8. It is Jewel's sixth chart entry. Not counting an album of holiday songs released in 1999, her five studio albums have all peaked in the top 10.

Here is how Jewel's six chart entries have fared:

"Pieces of You," No. 4 (1997)

"Spirit," No. 3 (1998)

"Joy: A Holiday Collection," No. 32 (1999)

"This Way," No. 9 (2001)

"0304," No. 2 (2003)

"Goodbye Alice in Wonderland," No. 8 (2006)

NELLY SHINES, TOO: Jewel isn't the only female singer returning to a Billboard chart this week. On the Hot 100, Nelly Furtado ends a five-year hiatus by debuting at No. 64 with "Promiscuous" (Mosley/Geffen). Featuring Timbaland, the single is the highest new entry of Furtado's career.

It is also only the third song by Furtado to chart on the Hot 100. Here is a summary of the debut positions achieved by those three singles, with peak positions in brackets.

"I'm Like a Bird," No. 66 (2001) [No. 9]

"Turn Off the Light," No. 69 (2001) [No. 5]

"Promiscuous," No. 66 (2006) [No. 66, to date]

TEXAS LIGHTNING STRIKES: The German entry in this year's Eurovision Song Contest has done something rare: it's reached the top spot on the German singles chart. It is only the fifth German entry in history to go to No. 1.

Sounding like a country tune recorded in Nashville, "No No Never" (Sony BMG) by Texas Lightning advances 2-1, equaling the highest rank achieved by these four German Eurovision entries:

"Zwei Kleine Italiener," Conny Froboess (1962)

"Dschinghis Khan," Dschinghis Khan (1979)

"Ein Bichen Frieden," Nicole (1982)

"Can't Wait Until Tonight," Max (2004)

Achieving pole position could be a harbinger of Texas Lightning's chances in this year's competition. Germany has won only once before, in 1982 with Nicole's song that translated into "A Little Peace."

'HORSE' GALLOPS: The "American Idol" effect on the Billboard charts continues, as KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" (Relentless) surges 79-23, following Katharine McPhee's performance of the song on last week's show.

That same show featured the now-departed Chris Daughtry singing Shinedown's "I Dare You" (Atlantic). That original version enters the Hot 100 at No. 88.
