The Spice Girls exploded on to the stage at the O2 Arena on Saturday night for their first UK performance in nine years.

Spice up Your Life seemed a fitting song to begin the most anticipated show of 2007. Five women - who once performed in track suits and home-made nylon costumes – now strutted across the vast stage, head-to-toe in shimmering designer dresses that glittered under the excited gaze of their fans.

This once 90s trash-pop girl band have thrown their plastic platforms out in exchange for expensive stilettos and flashy costumes. Long gone are the girl power signs; what Saturday night's thrilled audience were faced with was a band steeped in glamour and crawling in sophistication.

The first part of the show saw Spice Girl classics such as Stop and Say You'll Be There. Women they may now be but this didn't stop a little girly charm from trickling into the show as they shouted 'we love you London,' or as Emma Bunton – devoid of her crutches – screamed 'we're back together!'

It was certainly an energetic start for the vivacious five as they rolled through their performance. The hungry crowd danced and sang along enthusiastically until they sang their new single Headlines (Friendship Never Ends), which, in comparison to their previous songs, seemed flat and lifeless. Perhaps this suggests that the reunion tour, although an obvious success, would be a wise way to end the Spice Girls.

Despite the general buzz throughout the O2, there were a couple of fleeting moments where the crowd weren't as animated as one would imagine them to be at their first UK performance in almost a decade; one reason could be the modifications to the dance routines to ease the pressure on Emma Bunton's sprained ankle.

They glided through Lady is a Vamp with some sassy costumes and jazzy dance moves but slowed the pace for Too Much and Two Become One. Even at times when the crowd had quietened, Victoria Beckham was whooped and cheered every time she opened her mouth or tossed a poker-straight hair from her endlessly pouting face.

This must have bemused a sprinkling of fans – what exactly has Posh done to deserve such a hearty response? She is certainly glamorous and glitzy but she doesn't play a particularly large part in a Spice Girls performance. Melanie C, however, should have received the acclaim that Posh did as she is a key ingredient in giving the Spice Girls an edge to their music.

There is no doubt that she put on the most vigorous performance and really gave the crowd what they had paid to see.

Just as the mood in the arena had become adoring but leisurely, the Spice Girls kicked up a storm with their solo turns. Although Victoria Beckham stood around to Madonna's Like a Virgin not singing or smiling, merely striking poses, she was cheered wildly. Mel B ripped an unsuspecting fan out of the crowd and performed a fiery and blazing version of Are You Gonna Go My Way to him whilst grinding against the cage that she had locked him into – certainly spicing up his night.

Emma performed Maybe to a backdrop of a 60s set - all very Baby but not particularly riveting. Finally, as it came round to Geri Halliwell's turn, the atmosphere became electric. She gained the largest screams as It's Raining Men started up and thumped around the venue. The energy in the 02 cracked and sizzled as she ripped through her vocals, giving the crowd a damn good time.

Melanie C raised the vibe a notch further as she glided on to the stage and pumped her way through her solo techno inspired single, I Turn to You. As each Spice Girl performed solo, it highlighted two things; Victoria Beckham can get away with looking good and doing not much else but more importantly, the reception for each solo Spice was bigger than the Spice Girls as a unit.

The last part of the show saw some more old Spice Girl material such as Holler and Viva Forever. They then indulged in a disco medley that worked the crowd up into frenzy, ending on We are family.

The Spice Girls reunion was bursting with an undeniable air of nostalgia, some magnificent sets (including some pole-dancing action), some Spice Girl cartoon visuals and an array of dazzling costumes. They didn't quite regain the raw charm that catapulted them to success back in the 90s, but they did captivate the audience with a sparkling performance and some irresistible pop gems.

Victoria didn't sing she just posed and modled :P

I didn't say SING, I said perform :P Why did they DO other people's songs then?

Neither Mel B or Victoria have any "memorable" songs I guess? I don't think Maybe was Emma's most memorable either.

I think Victoria should have performed "Not Such An Innocent Girl", she seems to be popular with the crowd. I doubt they'd care if her performance was as good as the other girls. Mel B could sing "Feels So Good" it's really good.

I thought it was good Victoria did her own thing - she is known for Fashion and so a catwalk bit went well for her!

I couldnt fault the reunion tour at all - was outstanding!

Victoria is amazing she deserved to be cheered, she has an amazing voice and is always put down unfairly, anyway i do feel she should have performed Let Your Head Go or Out Of Your Mind.
