January 15, 200817 yr Author She's quite obviously heading for the top of the charts with the album I think, not so sure about "Mercy". She needs to get some proper tour dates out soon though. She's playing mini venues much. Bush Hall in London is only like capacity 200 :|
January 16, 200817 yr I utterly love this. She shows a lot of talent and promise and I really hope she gets more success than that Adele scab this year.
January 17, 200817 yr She looks like Dusty Springfield and sounds a bit like Amy Winehouse. 'Mercy' is quite a decent track, but it's not exactly going to spark a fire is it? Saying that, it's better than that Adele crap.
January 17, 200817 yr Author KE2orthS3TQ Official video. So different in HQ compared to the live version but equally wonderful <3
January 18, 200817 yr Ooof, she's a right stunner! Not a great video but nice enough to get her on the Hits though. I don't think anything will beat the Rockferry video though, it's just got so much atmosphere.
January 18, 200817 yr This song really is all kinds of amazing. She's the new Dusty Springfield.
January 18, 200817 yr I think Duffy's simply amazing, and she deserves every bit of success Mercy brings her, even if I do think it's a weaker song than Rockferry. However, she reminds me far more of another blonde UK torch singer - check out the wonderful Carmel.... she only had a few fleeting hits in the early 80s, and deserved many more.... but here's her biggest, the stunning Bad Day, and a few others - if anyone's able to embed these for me, I'd much appreciate it (can we have a sticky thread up top with the code to do this, please? ;) ) Bad Day: I'm Over You Every Little Bit It's All In the Game the similarities in their vocals is pretty startling, don't you think?
January 18, 200817 yr To embed, pretty much put [YOUTUBE/YOUTUBE] & then after the "=" sign, put in the code signal inbetween the YOUTUBE brackets. :) For example: Gdohz3yTWWc Carmel has such an amazing voice - doesn't sound dated at all & if it does, it's wonderfully nostalgic. January 18, 200817 yr thanks for that, Drastic - very kind.... and Carmel - she's terrific, I think - Bad Day's one of my favourite singles from the 80s.
January 20, 200817 yr Duffy is great, but I have to say I much prefer 'Rockferry' to 'Mercy' but maybe it will grow on me
January 20, 200817 yr Am I the only ones who think today's music journalists are really lazy compared to their more knowledgeable older equivalents? For starters I've been really getting irritated with journalists comparing Adele to Amy Winehouse, when vocally & image wise she is far more similiar to a young Alison Moyet. How every ethereal new female singer is like Kate Bush (i.e the return of Alison Goldfrapp, who in reality is more similar to Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) than "the mighty Bush") Whilst Duffy sounds nothing like Dusty Springfield IMHO. However she is very similar IMHO to 1980s US singer Marie McKee (Lone Justice): Eb_znrTEGpQ Lone Justice - Sweet Sweet Baby (I'm Falling) (1985) P6NP8KFcLqo Lone Justice - I Found Love (1987) KHYEvkfXJrM Maria McKee - Breathe (1991)

Kate Bush - even tho prog-associated - big iconic act as well - Elizabeth Fraser still slightly leftfield (but not as leftfield as Toni Halliday boom boom   - sorry for that - turned into basil brush for a mo) and as for Lone Justice/Maria McKee - thats only kinda useful ref in a one-hit wonder type of situation (or film soundtracks) or at a stretch maybe a comparison with 'Til Tuesday.
January 22, 200817 yr This song in HQ is amazing  I love it sooo much. I really hope it does well. I cant wait to see her live!
January 22, 200817 yr I also disagree with the Dusty Springfield comparisons. Somebody wrote that lazily on Duffy's press release and it's stuck. She's far, far more like Nancy Sinatra I think. Anyway, I prefer 'Rockferry' but 'Mercy' is very catchy - like Amy Winehouse without having been overplayed to death. As for Adele - I was hugely disappointed when I finally heard her at the Brits launch show - massively overrated and just general Brits school nepotism.

As for Adele - I was hugely disappointed when I finally heard her at the Brits launch show - massively overrated and just general Brits school nepotism. i agree with the first point - loved frank when it came out when amy was more in jazz-soul area rather than doing more jazzy-motown-pop - but now getting to the point where amy is so ubiquitus (esp on smooth with mark ronson' valerie) that is like omg not again as for adele vs duffy - you can see why adele's gonna get the bigger hit and why its gonna run and run (it sounds like a will young record  ) - even tho duffy's is not as 'hitastic' its probs the better record as it will not be as irretating as adele in 6 months time. but yeah curbs should be put on these Brit school types.
January 23, 200817 yr I think Duffy will be bigger this year. I can't imagine Adele's next single being very good. Her first one, was it called Hometown Glory? It's pretty rubbish really. Chasing Pavements sounds like it came about because the record label told her to write a hit. I can't imagine the rest of her material to be very special. I think Adele could be like Sandi Thom. Hometown Glory just reminds me on the Pug 308 advert I think Adele could be like Sandi Thom. annoying???
January 23, 200817 yr I think Adele could be like Sandi Thom. It's a good point, but Sandi Thom rode the crest of a self-created PR wave while Adele seems to have been picked up by the frontrunners of all media. I think both Duffy and Adele could be eclipsed by an 'outsider' this year though e.g. Laura Marling.
January 27, 200817 yr I hated this to begin with - I couldn't see the hype around the track or anything, but now I think it's really good. Her style is very much like Amy Winehouse, but at the same way it's quite different. I always thought Adele would be bigger than Duffy but now i'm not so sure. If Duffy promotes her material in the right way and to the right audience she'll be huge.
