Sales report this week:

Eagles 'Long Road' Goes Gold In One Week

by Paul Cashmere - December 24 2007

The Eagles 'Long Road Out Of Eden' sold an incredible 35,488 physical units this week, a little more than what a gold record is worth.

In Australia, Gold is accredited at 35,000 units sold into stores. Consequently, many a Gold and Platinum certification that you see on the ARIA Chart hasn't actually sold that many to the general public, just to the shops. The Eagles however are really selling out of stores and into the hands of fans.

The 35,488 units sold (plus an additional 73 downloads) have pushed Eagles sales of 149,612 units to date in Australia.

'Long Road Out Of Eden' has clocked up 2.2 million sales in the USA and 2.1 million for the rest of the world, making it one of the biggest selling albums of 2007. That's not bad for a band that hadn't had a new record in 28 years.

Per capita, Australia has taken to 'Long Road Out of Nowhere' more than even the USA. This week's 35,000+ sales is the equivalent of selling 500,000 in the USA.

On the DVD chart, 'Farewell 1 Tour Live From Melbourne' is at No. 21 after 116 weeks. It sold 2,551 units last week.

So now the big question is when will the band be back in Australia. I hear Australia might have to wait until early 2009 for another Eagles tour. Maybe just with the Aussie sales outstripping other territories, we might see the band a bit sooner.

Australia might not have taken to this year's Idol winner Natalie Gauci but the nation has given an even bigger 'thumbs down' to Idol judge Marcia Hines' latest effort 'Life'. 'Life' has struggled for an audience ever since it was released 5 weeks ago.

In physical CD sales, Natalie's 2 weeks on the chart with 'The Winner's Journey' has earned her 29,247 sales. Marcia's 'Life' has done 18,146 units over 5 weeks.

Marcia's 'Life' dropped to No. 60 on the physical sales chart this week with sales of 3,620 units. Natalie's 'The Winner's Journey' surfed the Christmas sales wave moving 18,040 units, a reasonable figure but still not enough to let her into the Top 10.

Marcia Hines was a considerable star in her day. She had her first hit with a cover of James Taylor's 'Fire and Rain' in 1975. It reached No. 17. Her Top 10 hits have included ''From The Inside' (1975), 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' (1976), 'What I Did For Love' (1977), 'You' (1977), 'Something's Missing In My Life' (1979) and 'You Love Still Brings Me To My Knees' (1981).

This year's real Idol winner is Guy Sebastian who did a Lazarus with his 'The Memphis Album'. By going outside the square and working with the crack team of musicians. Steve Cropper and Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Sebastian paid homage to the great soul sounds of Stax Records and won a new audience. That paid off last week to the tune of 23,223 CD sold (add an extra 196 units for downloads).

By comparison, Shannon Noll's career stalled in 2007 because his 'Turn It Up' album was way too safe and too much of the same thing. 'Turn It Up' is at No. 43 this week with 5,261 physical CD sales.

Last year's winner Damien Leith is hovering even lower, despite a reissue of 'Where We Land' for Christmas. 'Where We Land' landed outside the Top 50 at No. 53 on sales of 4,325.

Digital sales are accounting for more sales than CDs for 9 out the 10 titles in this week's Top 10. This begs the question, will the instore become the next victim of the digital revolution?

The younger music fans have definitely abandoned the CD single as their preferred means of purchase, for everyone it seems except Idols.

Natalie Gauci's 'Here I Am' is the only song in the Top 10 to sell more in the last week as a CD instead of a download. Natalie has been peddling hard to generate sales and doing the old instore it seems has thrown her a life-line.

'Here I Am' sold 3,953 units last week. 1,109 of them were digital. I guess it's too hard to get a MP3 autographed.

Timbaland's 'Apologize' was generating big bandwidth usage with downloads last week. The song sold 9,626 downloads and a total of 15,759 CD and download units combined.

At No. 2, The Veronica's 'Untouched' did 5,328 downloads to 7,854 combined sales. Alicia Keys 'No One' at No. 3 sold 4,147 downloads to 6,589 combined sales.
