Black pupils are enjoying Government-funded school trips that exclude white students.

One hundred schools have signed up to the controversial Black Pupils Achievement Programme, which the Government is piloting in an effort to reduce persistent under-achieving among black children.

Participating schools are encouraged to develop ideas to improve learning and behaviour among black pupils and to involve their parents more.

But the £1.3million-a-year programme also funds trips, through large grants, that white children cannot attend.

Black pupils are taken to galleries, museums and the offices of local companies up to four times a year to be inspired into working harder at school.

The trips are part of a larger effort to ensure that the curriculum reflects the "experiences of African-Caribbean and Muslim pupils", according to the Department of Children and Schools.

The scheme includes the introduction of the analysis of rap songs into English lessons and classes on the topography of Caribbean islands during geography.

The attempt to encourage black pupils through grants and targeting has already had a controversial introduction - with Equality and Human Rights Commission chairman Trevor Phillips becoming embroiled in a row with educationalists over his support for separate lessons for struggling black pupils.

Conservative universities spokesman David Willetts said the Government was in danger of promoting segregation in both schools and society with the latest initiative.

He added: "This is dangerous territory for schools to get into.

"What if they were organising trips for white working-class boys?"

Schools in the programme have defended the single-race excursions.

Nigel Akers, vice principal of Djanogly City Academy in Nottingham, where 55 per cent of the school is non-white, said: "We have to target these groups.

"The results are impressive - underachieving black pupils are now outperforming the Pakistani boys, whose grades have been very good."

Last night Mr Phillips refused to comment.

Disgusting and utterly RACIST

If there was a White Pupils Achievement Programme it would result in those behind it being hauled before the courts on race hate charges so the fact there are special awards for blacks is utterly racist and should not be allowed

exactly.

My College takes part in this programme.

It causes a lot of resentment amongst not only white students but other racial strata in my college...

I'm black and it's racist and stupid. Assuming my future son/daughter is black too, I don't want him/her learning about RAP in English class. I find that racist too! Listening to old rap songs from the 90s, they used to talk about important topics e.g. staying alive and doing something positive in life, but now it's about having naked women dancing around, drugs, "bling bling" and how many times they can fit the n-word into one sentence. What is there to analyse?

.

I'm kind of in two minds about this... On the one hand, I dont agree with special "school trips", because this can easily cause resentment, and, ironically can lead to the sort of racism that this programme is surely trying to avoid.. But, on the other, if there is an identified issue with black boys in particular underachieving in exams and in class, then that problem does have to be addressed in some way surely, we cant let whole social group just fall by the wayside... Having more intensive coaching or special after-school classes is surely an idea that no one can object to... Trouble is, with no incentive, how to get the people you want to target in there interested... It's double-edged sword and I dont envy the task of those trying to pull this off, I think the intentions are honourable at the end of the day, they just need to go about it in the right way which wont cause resentment amongst white and asian pupils, if what that headmaster is saying is true, it does appear to be having the desired effect inasmuch as the academic standards of the kids in his school are improving, so it cant be all bad, it just needs a bit of tweaking..

And I certainly dont agree with teaching cretinous, sexist rap lyrics in class either, unless you're talking about analyzing something like Public Enemy or NWA and go into the social conditions that created those expressions....

scott..... the correct way foreward on this would to put the trip on for ALL under-achievers regardless of ethnicity or sex.

You'd probably still get people moaning about it though mate. They'll say, "why are only the thick kids allowed to go on this trip Miss...?" .. I dunno, it just seems like the papers are full of stories about "falling education standards amongst black kids", and now they're moaning about something which appears to be working... Teachers really cant really win either way can they? Damned if they do, damned if they dont, they just seem to cop flak from the fukkin' media no matter what, and I dont really like that tbh.... <_< They are trying to help these kids here, just perhaps in not quite the right way granted, but I dont think they deserve to cop it in the way they are, because at least they're doing something to sort things out....

........and how would it look if only thick white kids were taken on the trip?... yes all under achievers need to be helped, but discrimination breeds contempt and hatred. ive related before how the polish/eastern european kids at the secondary school where i work are being treated differently from the kids of all nationalities that were derby born.... its causing resentment and racism even...

to me, equality means equality.... an underachiever IS an underachiever regardless of colour.

Treated differently how exactly...? A bit more attention from teacher..? After-school classes to bring up their language skills a bit...? A couple of temporary interpreters maybe..? So fukkin' what??? You need to have that sh!t in place in the transitionary period.. You just dont seem to appreciate the fact that these kids have got one hell of an adjustment to make, and that it needs to be made as painless as it possibly can be, you cant just flick a switch in a kid's head and expect them to be totally up to speed, it takes time and patience, I expect a bit of resentment, impatience and intolerance in the other kids because they dont fully appreciate what it's like cos they're young (but I do expect the teachers to communicate effectively to the kids just why the "special treatment" for kids who dont speak English well is actually in place...), but not in so-called fully grown, mature adults who ought to damn well know better... If I had kids and we were moving to, say, France or Germany, I would fully expect the education systems there to have that sort of help and aid in place to help with their transitions from learning lessons in English to learning lessons in French or German. We're EUROPEANS now Rob, get with the programme....

nope i dont mean that at all.... so that was a waste of a rant! pmsl...

they dont have to wear uniform (dispite having a whopping great hand out to fund it... <_< ), and they are not disciplined in the same way derbys white/black/mixed/asian kids are... they get away with mis-behaving, being allowed to have ipods in school, and to walk out whenever they want too.... you cannot segregate these kids then expect unity... its fcukin bonkers.

If it's working then it obviously isn't all that bad. I do see your point of view, but I was angry about the focus on rap. That's not the only thing black people have come up with. It's an insult after all the other things we've invented/influenced.

I just remember sitting in the GCSE exam hall and reading a whole paper that seemed to be aimed at boys (just because they don't do as well as us girls). It was about cars, cowboys and I've seen another before on space...it's not fair. Reach out to underachievers, but don't alienate other people at the same time. Is it possible? Maybe. Maybe not.

You also said that if it was for all underachievers, that the "smart"/"well behaved" people would complain. I totally agree. I was always well behaved and it always seemed like the unruly ones got the praise just for behaving for five seconds. These trips would've seemed unfair. I know better now, but at the time it would've seemed unfair.

Good intentions and all, but a ridiculous scheme.

This sort of thing only emphasises social divides and builds up jealousy and resentment. The end result will be people segregated into their ethnic groups, and racists being provided with even more ammunition.

Positive discrimination does NOT work.

No way this is true!

So it excludes Europeans and Asians?

I know C of E schools can be racist. If you ain't Church of England they don't really bother about you. They make pay for your own bus pass!

I swear at school there was leaflet about other schools in the area, and one of them said "Asians only", so if a whole school can say that, then 4 measly trips a yr are fine.
I don't see what the big deal is. It's only the blacks going on a day trip?.

The fact is that if whites did it, it would be deemed as unethical and wrong.
