and now time to put your pop-predictor spheres into orbit as its time for

The Menswe@r award

http://www009.upp.so-net.ne.jp/death/menswear.jpg

this is for the new-ish indie band/act of 2007 that everyone seems to love and that the type of band the press loves and has hyped to death but come 2012 will be very embarrased about their uselessness.

which ones do you think will join these names pictured here in a not a pleasure just guilty list?

the Twang? the Enemy? Jack Penate?? Little Man Tate (that is if anyone will remember Little Man Tate - the band - in 2012)??? who do you think??

Klaxons

Spot on.. NME giving their piece-of-sh!t album the "album of the year" title is just an utter joke... I listened to it, seriously nothing special.... Overhyped, just like the Elastica debut back in the day.. And look what happened to them....

then you should put in that list The Stone Roses also cause look what happened to them after their debut album...

i think you r wrong about the Klaxons and Elastica.

The Klaxons released a very good debut with some amazing songs.i dont know if its the album of the year or not (imo its not)n i dont really care as long as i enjoy that album.

the same about Elastica n their classic debut.i bought it in 1995 n i still hear it n to tell you the truth i much prefer these days their 2nd album with its raw n underground power.in Elastica's case dont blame their talent but only the drugs n their personal problems...

in music its not about how many albums a band can release or how long they are gonna stay with us.

to me its about the quality of their work...

btw, i cant say the same things about The Enemy , The Pigeon Detectives or The Twang .its a pleasure for me to nominate them for that award...

Wrong, The Stone Roses debut album created an epoch and it was a damn good album which more than justified the hype, it still sounds great almost 20 years on, the Elastica album was incredibly average guitar pop, NOT a classic in the slightest, people just do NOT hold it in high regard at all; and, unlike Elastica, they actually did manage to release a second full-length album (the second Elastica "album" was a mini-album), it just wasn't that great, but then, realistically, how could it have been...?

Elastica were musical pygmies who only got hyped because Justine was shagging Damon....

Im only 15 and wasnt around or old enough to realise when Stone Roses and Elastica were about but ive brought all Stone Roses albums listen to them regulary and often hear there songs on tv and radio, but elastica i only know one song, which is only ok, nothing particulary good. Stone Roses are amazing!

I do quite like The Twang, but I can see them being a Menswear type band come 2012 (or even 2008 )

I saw Menswear live back in 1996 - and I have their album. Being Brave is great, tbf.

There is no way Klaxons will just 'go'. Yea, everything that NME say is overrated hype and bull$h!t, but the music is what counts. And people say that Klaxons arn't special, but they won the Mercury Music Prize ffs, the NME Album/single of the year means f*** all tbh....

Edited by Jonny

The Mercury may be about the most credible of awards going but even M People have won it. It doesn't mean that much, really.

I wouldn't call the Mercurys at ALL credible, they dole out awards to the likes of M-People, Dizzee Rascal and Ms fukkin' Dynamite, then ignore the likes of Radiohead, Massive Attack or Ladytron who have created the some of the most interesting music by far in this country over the past decade or so... An utter bloody JOKE.... <_<

first of all to clear some things ....i have to say that i agree with you about the stone roses.their debut is definitely a classic n one of my favourite albums ever.

but you should read carefully my post to understand why i used them as an example...anyway...

you are definitely wrong about Elastica...do you really think that its success had to do only with Justine n Damon?oh well...

i bought that album at the time cause it had some amazing tunes n not for the gossip.

it was one of the most successful brit pop albums outside UK cause it was really good.u know , americans didnt know anything about Damon n his parklife , but they knew every Elastica tune.

after all these years , many of these tunes still sound fresh n exciting such as "2:1" , "connection" , "line up" , "wakin up" etc...it was a great debut n still remains one of the most characteristic albums of the britpop era.

btw , how many bands can you name with female vocals after Elastica's debut?

you r wrong too about the second stone roses album.actually it wasnt a full length album at all.it was only about 1,5 (one n half) songs...the rest was just fillers n totally c**p.

btw , elastica after the release of their eponymous debut , released a mini album ("Elastica 6 track ep") and a second proper album ("The Menace"). Make yourself a favour n if you have time hear it "again".it sounds better than almost anythin of the current brit scene...("Mad dog" , "How He Wrote Elastica Man" with Mark E. Smith , "Image Change", "Human" ,"My Sex" etc )

Dizzee Rascal is fantastic. =/ Absolutely deserved the award it got. Yes, even over Radiohead. Boy in Da Corner is an absolutely amazing album.

But yes, the award doesn't mean too much though the winners thus far (besides Klaxons and M-People) have all been quite good.

Definetly The Twang!!.

Much as I was caught up in the hype, the Twang seems likely yes.

Elastica's first LP was and still is pretty ace, they were never too hyped - they backed it up.

The Kooks are pretty much The Stereophonics of this generation so they'll still be around in 2012 probably.

i cant give a verdict on the stone roses albums as i've not actually heard them, tho i think ian's Sister Rose was a climinally ignored single this year and should have got top 40 at least.

tho with the stone roses second didnt the band just fall apart in the 5 years that the album took, and had loads of production difficulties and in the end it wasnt really the stone roses but totally random dudes filling out the ranks

But yes, the award doesn't mean too much though the winners thus far (besides Klaxons and M-People) have all been quite good.

but if you dont like m-people's style of music (if their thing is not targeted at you/your demographic) how do you know it is not good, my mum thinks its very good indeed (she is a smooth radio fan )

The Kooks are pretty much The Stereophonics of this generation so they'll still be around in 2012 probably.

and the stereophonics are the ocean colour scene of the early 00s and ocean color scene*, well a bit like status quo, but less alternative

*ooh see how its all went american for my sophomore posting of their name
