114 Cyndi - I'll Leave My Heart (5wks 5-5-17-21-30)

On 17 March 2007 French singer Cyndi competed in the BBC's Eurovision: Making Your Mind Up contest to decide who would represent the United Kingdom at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki, Finland. She sang the song "I’ll Leave My Heart", which had been produced by renowned Grammy award winning producer Brian Rawling. Terry Wogan announced the winner to be Cyndi while, simultaneously, co-host Fearne Cotton revealed the winner to be Scooch. After several seconds of confusion from both contestants, it was revealed that Scooch were the true winners. It was later revealed by the BBC that Cyndi had received 47% of the vote to scooch's 53%.

Wogan felt obliged to apologise to Cyndi several times during his Radio 2 shows the following week such was the groundswell of goodwill towards Cyndi and anger towards the BBC's handling of the hugely popular show with the British public seemingly feeling the wrong artist had been selected, Cyndi was interviewed on GMTV’s Today show as the controversy raged throughout the week, an online petition was launched by eurovision fans demanding Cyndi be reinstated and sent to Finland instead of the rather kitsch Scooch who eventually came second to last in the final eurovision vote, the second worst performance by a UK representative in the programmes long history.
