20 Mika - Grace Kelly (11wks 35*-1-1-1-1-3-3-8-13-32)

 

 

Michael Holbrook Penniman got off to a flying start thanks to this wonderfully camp piece of Freddie Mercury goes pop. Unfortunately, by the end of 2007 he had worn his welcome out, at least with me. This track spent a month at UK#1 in January.

 

19 Arcade Fire - Intervention (10wks 4-4-11-23-X(13)-3-2-2-6-12-23)

 

 

The third & final track on my countdown from Montreal's legitimate contender for the Best Band in the World right now. This truly haunting hypnotic anthemic track failed to reach the UK Top75, to the detriment of the UK record buying public.

 

 

18 Girls Aloud - Call The Shots (9wks 35-21-17-5-3-3-7-9-10*)

 

 

Making the abhorration that was the official Comic Relief single of 2007 seem like the nightmare it was, GA continued their usual practise of releasing the best track from a studio album as the second single. This track that strangely evokes memories of Swain & Jolley era Bananarama peaked at UK#3 in late November.

17 Sugababes - About You Now (11wks 34-17-10-5-1-2-2-3-8-19-28)

 

 

Making the abhorration that was the official Comic Relief single of 2007 seem like the nightmare it was (hang on I've already said that :lol:), the SBs continued their usual practise of releasing the best track from a studio album as the first single. This track that unsurprisingly evokes memories of Cathy Dennis' early 1990s dance hits (probably because she wrote it!) peaked at UK#1 in September.

 

16 Editors - Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors (10wks 9-4-1-1-1-4-11-20-32-40)

 

 

"Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors" was the first single from Editors' underwhelming second album An End Has a Start. It was released in June and peaked at UK#7.

15 Client - Xerox Machine (11wks 8-2-2-4-6-11-14-18-27-32-37)

 

 

Client are a futurist British musical group from Rotherham, England who have toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia. They are most popular in Germany where they have had most commercial success. They combine Scandinavian airline hostess uniforms with glamour-girl aesthetics and harsh electronics to create a sound reminiscent of early forays into electronic sound manipulation and New Wave. Their uniforms have become their trademark. This fantastic cover of the old Adam Ant track featuring (ex-Dubstar) Sarah Blackwood on lead vocals sadly failed to reach the UK Top75 in February, as the Great British public would much rather buy any old tosh that Simon Cowell throws there way.

14 Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent (11wks 12-6-4-3-2-2-5-10-16-21-32)

 

 

"Fluorescent Adolescent" is a song by the Arctic Monkeys and the second single from their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare. This incredibly commercial track only reached UK#5 in July with a video directed by actor (It Crowd/Nathan Barley) Richard Ayoade.

13 Manic Street Preachers ft Nina Persson - Your Love Alone Is Not Enough (10wks 15-7-6-3-3-2-3-6-12-20-29)

 

 

"Your Love Alone Is Not Enough" is a single by Welsh Rock group the Manic Street Preachers, taken from the album Send Away the Tigers, also featuring vocals from Nina Persson of The Cardigans.

 

On Tuesday, Music Week reported that the single was due to hit #1 on Sunday 6th May, after its physical release. However, they charted at number 2, just behind the Beyonce-Shakira (awful) collaboration "Beautiful Liar" which kept the top spot via Friday & Saturday's sales.

 

12 Foo Fighters - Long Road To Ruin (6wks 1-1-1-5-10-11*)

 

 

"Long Road to Ruin" is the second single from the Foo Fighters' sixth studio album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, following the band's most played song in history, "The Pretender." Despite yet another hilarious video this song only reached UK#35 in December.

 

 

 

11 Duffy - Rockferry (5wks 20-9-1-1-1*)

 

 

This limited release track by Welsh singer Duffy is the first fruit of her collaborating with producer (ex Suede / McAlmont & Butler) guitarist & songwriter Bernard Butler. Whilst the media hype seems to be around Adele, I'm more excited about what Duffy's debut album will sound like.

 

 

10 Mark Ronson - Stop Me (9wks 1-1-1-1-3-7-11-16-24)

 

 

In 2007, the classic Smiths song (from their final album 1987's Strangeways Here We Come) was re-composed with additional lyrics from the song "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by The Supremes by British-born New York DJ, Mark Ronson using the voice of Daniel Merriweather as the lead. It reached UK#2 in April. It achieved the near impossible of making Stephen Patrick Morrissey's lyrics sound "black"! :lol:

 

Incidentally this is not the last Johnny Marr composition in my Year end Top10....

 

9 Rufus Wainwright - Going To A Town (10wks 11-1-1-1-1-4-8-17-27-40)

 

 

Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright (born July 22, 1973) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Since 1998, he has recorded five albums of original music, several EPs, and numerous tracks included on compilations and film soundtracks. He is the son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, brother of Martha Wainwright.

 

A former Radio 2 record of the week, this sublime track was the lead single taken from Release The Stars his UK#2/USA#23 album. The single reached UK#57. This track gives the good old USA a good old finger-wagging, featuring the stunning female vocal harmonies of Kate McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright & very good friend & sometime touring band member, Joan Wasser.

 

Why Rufus is not as big as what Mika is remains a mystery to me.

8 Jarvis - Don't Let Him Waste Your Time (16wks 26*-16-13-8-2-2-8-10-15-24-23-24-30-34-40)

 

 

Sheffield Jarvis Cocker (former lead singer of Pulp) released this song as a single on 8 January 2007 where it reached UK#34. However it has sustained video airplay due to its imaginative and hilarious video.

 

7 Amy Macdonald - Mr Rock & Roll (11wks 4-4-1-1-4-6-8-12-20-24-32)

 

 

Scottish singer/songwriter released the quite splendid debut album This Is The Life in 2007. Taken from it was the first full release, this wonderful track evoking memories of a female Lloyd Cole & the Commotions. It reached UK#12 in August.

 

Incidentally, she is the same age as X-Factor winner and fellow Scot Leon Jackson, but I wonder who is the better live singer/songwriter & performer? :rolleyes:

6 Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby (12wks 30-23-12-3-1-1-1-1-11-18-26-40)

 

 

"Ruby" is a song by English rock band Kaiser Chiefs and is the lead track on their second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob. It was released as the lead single from that album in the United Kingdom as a download on February 5, and as a limited edition 7" and CD single on February 19 that year. It became the band's first ever #1 single on February 25, 2007, and ended 2007 as the years 10th biggest-selling single in the UK.

 

As is becoming an increasing trend amongst 21st Century acts, the lead single from their second album turns out to be their best & biggest song preceding an underwhelming second album.

5 Alison Moyet - One More Time (11wks 22-10-1-1-1-2-5-12-19-31-40)

 

 

Alison Moyet (born Genevieve Alison Jane Moyet on 18 June 1961), is an English pop singer-songwriter noted for her bluesy voice. Taken from her 7th studio solo album (after two albums as part of Yazoo with Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode/Erasure)). The Turn, was released on 15th October 2007, preceded by the single 'One More Time' a week earlier failing to reach the UK Top75. The album features an eclectic mix of self-penned songs, including the three numbers she wrote for the stage play, Smaller. Again, Alison worked alongside producer/songwriter and frequent Moyet collaborator Pete Glenister.

 

4 Modest Mouse - Dashboard (15wks 1-1-3-7-6-13-14-17-18-18-12-15-17-21-33)

 

 

In 2006, former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined 1990s US Indie/Alernative cult band Modest Mouse to begin work on the next Modest Mouse album. The album, entitled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank was released on March 20, 2007. The album was successful in being the first Modest Mouse album to reach number 1 on the US Billboard 200 charts, and spawned the hit single "Dashboard".

 

Sadly this fantastic song built on another gem of a Johnny Marr guitar riff failed to trouble the UK Top75 in June after reaching USA#21 in April.

 

3 Kate Nash - Foundations (12wks 1-1-1-2-2-2-3-4-8-16-21-34)

 

 

Kate Marie Nash (born 6 July 1987) is an English singer songwriter from Harrow, Middlesex. She has been compared to Lily Allen (although hopefully she is a nicer person) because of their storytelling lyrics, the dry sense of humour that fuels their songs as well as distinctive London accents. "Foundations" was released as the album's lead single in from her UK#1 debut album Made of Bricks.

 

The song debuted and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart for five non-consecutive weeks; it was preceded firstly by Rihanna's "Umbrella" and then by Timbaland's "The Way I Are", which sold just 16 copies more than "Foundations".

2 Nelly Furtado - Say It Right (26wks 21-7-4-3-2-2-2-2-5-11-13-17-24-25-31-33-34-31-28-35-39-28-27-27-26-34)

 

 

"Say It Right" is a song written by Nelly Furtado, Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley and Nate "Danja" Hills for Furtado's third album, Loose (2006). According to Media Traffic, it is the second most successful single of 2007, despite only peaking at number two on the United World Chart. It is the most successful single for Nelly Furtado and Geffen Records, her label. The song is nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.

 

It reached USA#01 & peaked at UK#10 during a lengthy chart-run all without physical sales.
