Moving it in the right direction? He's done **** all since he took over - the last time I saw him on TV was when he was chosen :arrr:
His views on contraception are a lot more forward thinking than that old fart JPII who caused millions of deaths through his attitude on contraception

Maybe, but so far it's all just rabbit and not enough actual action on the ground to get things changed..... <_<

I think this discussion is stupid, because everyone will say the Pope is forward thinking because of his views, HOWEVER, that´s the religion he represents, he cannot change it unless he is not a Catholic anymore. So it makes no sense to discuss if he is a conservative or not, he´sonly a Catholic. He will always be against homossexualism, contraception, aborption, etc... And if he´s not, then he´s not a Catholic and not Pope anymore, over.
About the weight of the church these days, I think it has decreased a lot. Not even practicing catholics listen to 100% of what vatican says, everyone has sex before marriage, and everyone uses condoms, and nobody goes to church every sunday, so even among the catholics the church influence is decreasing. Not to mention the number of catholics is decreasing a lot, some are becoming atheist, some are becoming more "open" religious, and some are going to other religions, specially here where I live there are thousand of catholics becoming protestants, catholics were once almost 100% of brazil, now they´re only 70% and maybe one day will become a minority...

That's harsh, like Dido Fan said, he was Catholic so he couldn't exactly all of a sudden change his views on it could he?

Yes, imagine if one day the Pope says that god is not a trinity or Mary was not virgin - then he is not a catholic anymore. If the church changes it will lose all its credibility, cause people will not believe on something that changes all the time.

Surely better to change your mind, then always be wrong?

the notion of a pope as gods reprisentitive on earth is archaic, its utterly nonsensicle thatr in these days we still uphold this dark-age concept.

get rid.

I'd be more than happy to see the Vatican and all the fascists in it disappear in a huge hole in the ground.

Agreed. Martin Luther was right....

Do you think the Roman Catholic Church have any weight, or importance in modern life?

Weight, what weight? they lost that when they stopped burning people who didn't follow them.

The pope can change his mind whenever he wants, just get out of the church... He cannot say those things and STILL be in church. He is not the owner of the church, then if the pope decides that Budda is the real god, then all catholics should believe it?

Heya, you´ve been reading too much Dan Brown...
