If you were trying to introduce someone to Darius' music, but could only have one song for them to hear, which would you choose and why? I know there is so much variety in D's music, but your choice is strictly limited to just 1 song :)

I guess now I have asked, I should go and think about it myself

For me, it would depend on the person I was going to get to listen to it. He's done such a wide variety, I'd try and choose one which would be to their taste.

You should be an Ambassador to the United Nations, Megham, with that kind of reply, you should be in diplomacy

This wil need some thought ...

Yes Boo, I am still considering my answer too

Let us presume we don't know this particular person's taste, as that would further complicate the question. What I would like people to choose, is the song they feel would best showcase Darius' talents, to potentially hook new fans to his fanbase. I am currently torn between my personal favourites, to those which have been commercially successfull, to the acuostic versions of some

Incidentally, this question came to me, as I am trying to convert a WY fan at work, into listening to D :D

as megham says it would depend on the person.

this is going ot be hard..

I think, no-matter what anyone's music preference, 'Secret Song' would have to appeal to most people. Just Darius and his guitar, a beautiful song, clarity of voice and wonderful guitar playing. My stepson (24 years old) loves Darius - he liked his first singles so I bought him Dive In and he loved it!! However, with Live Twice (the album), he wasn't so sure!! He liked Live Twice, but having skimmed through said he preferred Dive In. I played him 'Secret Song' (he hadn't even realised it was on there!!) - he loved it and then played the album thoroughly - hooked!! Another convert!! :D

I find this very difficult because asyou say it depends on the persons taste, they may like rocky or ballad etc. Eventually to hear the guitar and written by him alone, I have chosen Chrysalis to a butterfly.
I think possibley tear run dry, as to me it is a classic song, and it has been mentioned to me that it is a timeless classic..and that once heard people seem to find it stuck in their heads

But, you see, I hate that one. It's so subjective. You'd need to know the person first. If it being written and sung by Darius isn't enough for me, then I wouldn't expect it to be for other people.

Sorry Meg, it was between chrysalis to a butterfly and tear run dry for me but chose the former because of the guitar, although I tink tear run dry produced other than as a songwriting demo would be great.
I don't mind it being other people's favorite at all - I was just using that as an example of how differently we all hear things. I don't expect my favorites to be other people's and vica versa

I think that Meg is right in the sense that if you're choosing one for someone else, it might depend on what other type of music appeals to them, rather than what appeals to you - though I'm not sure if I can think of anything that bridges Darius with Will Young B.P. ... not sure? ... but one single song to represent Darius musically, isn't really possible with the range of styles he's done, so I do you think you'd be best aiming for something you think that individual person might like :)

Have they not already heard Darius's commercially successful songs - B.P. - I'd have thought that a Will Young fan would be fairly familiar with Darius already?

Mocking Bird was the song that got me hooked into Darius in the first place - it was the only proper Darius song I knew for ages - so, that one that got me hooked anyway :D

- But I really don't know what I'd choose now though - been spoilt for choice since then :D

- I still haven't been able to choose my favourite track off Dive In anyway

You could maybe go by the poll results so far:

Dive In Track - ? I don't know 'cos I've not voted, so I can't see the result - is it Mercury Rising?

Dive In B-side = Tear Run Dry

Live Twice Track = Secret Song

Live Twice B-side = Faith in Me

They are the current favourites of a tiny number of Darius fans who've voted on here at the moment ;)

For a Pop fan, I'd go with Dive In or Stars Crash Down which are at least on albums.

Better than most adult contemporary stuff around - Now or Never, Mercury Rising, Better Man

Folk/Country fans - Big Feather Bed, Freefall, Mystery of You.

Edgier - Faith in Me, Only You, Fragile, Mocking Bird including the original "and free it".

I will try to pare these down later.

oh yes, I like Better Man

I think I would opt for something less poppy, definately not a release as most have heard them anyway.

Most people seem to be suprised at the depth and variety of the tracks by Darius when they hear them, I have some say that surely this or that song is written by someone else as it comes as such a contrast after Rushes or Incredible's style,

then again you have the more rock, Indie people and they may like Only you, or resolution - or my mum and dad, who totally arent into music produced these days, yet love Devil In you and Live twice

Yes it does surprise people. Do you remember when Resolution was played on Metro for a mystery artist question? Because of the deep vocals, people were guessing Nickelback, the Calling and loads of other rock groups.

This particular lady only tuned in to Pop Idol to watch the final, and was instantly hooked on Will. She had heard D's name but never seen him or heard any of his music.

In answer to my original question, I think I would have to choose Chrysalis To Butterfly, as it features such an incredibly pure vocal from D, and shows his skill on the guitar. This would be closely followed by the secret track on Dive In, which was the acoustic version of Gotta Know Tonight, and an acoustic version of Live Twice.

I know there is no way of showcasing all D's skills in just 1 of his songs, but sometimes you only get one chance to let people who are too busy or generally can't be bothered, to hear and experience D for themselves. That was why I asked the question in the way I did, restricting people to just the one song.

Tear Run Dry surprisingly isn't one of my favourites, even though it is a ballad type song. To me it has a melancholic ring to it, which whilst conveying emotion, just doesn't push my buttons, so to speak.

Thanks for the interesting responses anyway folks :)

I still haven't managed to whittle my choices down but with the video clip I think I'd go for Mercury Rising for adult contemporary.
