Oxford has become the latest place in Britain where Muslims have submitted an application to broadcast calls to prayer from a mosque.

Residents have urged the council to reject the request for a two-minute call three times a day, warning that it would turn the area into a Muslim ghetto.

However, elders at Oxford Central Mosque argue that it is part of their tradition.

Rezwana Rana, a spokesman for the mosque, said: "We don't want to tread on anyone's toes, but the area is very multicultural and we thought it would be an idea to have a call to prayer."

Dr Mark Huckster, who lives in the area, said: "It isn't a Muslim-dominated area, but I think over a period of time there would be a population shift if this went ahead."

Ibrahim Mogra, an imam and leading member of the Muslim Council of Britain, said that most residents get accustomed to the call to prayer.

The imam said cities including Bradford, Blackburn, Manchester, Bolton, Coventry and Birmingham allowed the prayers. They are restricted to "sociable hours" and to a maximum decibel level.

No should not be allowed

I lived in Qatar for a period and it was bloody annoying being woken up at 5am by sirens and klaxons summoning muslims to prayer, fine if they want to do that in Qatar but why should it happen here and inconvenience the indigenous non muslim majority ?

stop being so racist, Vic :P ;)

As for these mosques being given the right to do this? Of course not...and for anyone saying yes, they should...well maybe THEY would like to be living right next door to one, I don't think it'd be too long before they'd change their minds.

Yeah exactly, let them buy an alarm clock and set the alarm, I know from first hand what prayer call klaxons are like and they are like air raid sirens, would wake up the whole of Oxford

its bloody obscene..... the dreaming spires of oxford being suplimented by bloody mosques?.. would christians be allowed to build a church and ring bells in baghdad?....

I dont think that would happen, considering the calls would be restricted to sociable hours and have maximum decibel levels in accordance to local council guidelines.... I dont think it would be any more of a "Noise problem" than the pealing of church bells... I lived in Central Hackney for two years, quite near a Mosque, never heard a damn thing coming out of the place, so I think people are being a bit silly tbh...

I dont think anyone in the current Iraqi administration would actually stop them (seeing as how they're pretty much in the pockets of the Americans)... And how many civilian Christians actually in Baghdad anyway..? Silly comparison...

true - then again, the ones that were there were probably murdered or hounded out of the city....

Wouldn´t the devote Muslims know their time of prayer without needing to be reminded?

That's what I was thinking.

If the Muslim's are that dedicated to praying, then they shouldn't need a local broadcast to remind them.

And 'Muslim ghetto'

not really.... its all semantics. the point is valid... what islamic country would allow a christian migration into their country and allow them to set up a church and ring bells?....

yet again its the do-gooders who are destroying the traditional english way of life.... church bells. like em or hate them (shut up you bast*rds...lol) are part of the traditional way of life in england and have been for hundereds of years.

what islamic country would allow a christian migration into their country and allow them to set up a church and ring bells?....

exactly...an excellent point.

And surely, if this was allowed (as if).... the Christians in question wouldn't then go round trying to smother Islam and demand Christianity become an accepted part of every Muslim's life, as Muslims seem to be doing here.

They should be allowed to practise their religion freely. In South Africa we have many mosques which are allowed to broadcast their prayer calls and nobody complains about it.

I'm not aware of ANY such activities under the regime of Saddam Hussein tbh... In fact, there were THOUSANDS of Westerners living perfectly comfortably and pretty much unmolested (such as Margaret Hassan who was murdered by Islamic extremists AFTER Saddam was removed from power..) in Saddam's far more secular Iraq (like him or loathe him, he successfully kept the likes of Al Qaeda OUT of his country for years..), before we bulldozed in and created the current insane sectarian situation which is likely to tear the country apart a'la Yugoslavia....

Nah, Christians only did that in Africa, South East Asia, etc, etc...... -_- Not to Islam as such, but to whatever pagan tribal gods that those people worshipped, imposing Christianity which has had a pretty negative effect upon Africans as a whole... The French did the same in Indochine, oppressing the worship of Bhudda... What goes around comes around mate... And I didn't feel particularly threatened by having a Mosque five/ten minutes up the road from me in Hackney tbh, I didn't even know the place was even there until months after I moved in, it aint as if Muslims are really doing what us and the French did during the "empire" or "missionary" days, that's just not the case at all, I dont have Muslims calling round to MY flat trying to convert me, Jehovas bloody Witnesses or other sundry "Christian" groups however.... <_< People are just being stupid about this whole issue IMO...

As a non-religionist I object to anyone imposing their religious practices on me. Prayer-calls, church bells - just stop!

Hear Hear... I'm pretty much of the opinion that if we stop ONE bunch of religious loonies from doing it, we should stop ALL of them, whether or not they're supposedly part of our "culture" or not... Which is utter bollocks anyway... What the fukk is "British" about sodding Christianity ffs....? It started in the Middle East/Judea, filtered through ROMAN Catholicism and GERMAN Lutheranism/Presbyterianism, and then DUTCH Protestantism.... Sod all "British" about ANY of this sh!t..... <_< <_<

We've got the Olympics- mwahahahahaha! :yahoo:

I agree. I know it's tradition but still...why should you need someone ringing a bell/shouting out to remind you?

And 'Muslim ghetto'

Why a "ghetto"? That is insulting.

christianity came here in the 6th centuary m8.... i think that is more then long enough to qualify as 'traditional british'... besides our culture, way of life, everything has been effected by the christian church wether you (or i) like it or not.
