January 11, 200817 yr Author Then surely the Govt should be pushing for a Europe-wide banning of factory and battery farming practices.... Frankly, I'm glad that we have the guts to lead the way in this entirely honourable issue... And besides, I dont believe for a minute that farmers will go out of business, god knows the buggers get subsidised enough through OUR taxes..... <_< I see very few poor farmers in this country.... oh i agree.... dictating laws should work both ways and i see no reason why our euro mp's shouldnt be pressing for fair, humane treatment of farm animals right across europe.... .... except that the french wouldnt accept it!
January 11, 200817 yr Author Define a "decent" profit though.... Are they actually running at a loss...? If not, well, they're doing a hell of a lot better than the vast majority of small businesses out there.... Sorry, I dont buy it.. I know from first hand knowlege that farmers in places like Devon and Cornwall, and many in Scotland too, are very comfortably off indeed.. I know a farmer who's got a fukkin' Jag and a Bentley in his barn!!!! And they brag about how much they get off the EU subsidies fund.. So, please, dont tell me that they're all poor and cant make ends meet... Compare a typical farmer in this country (or indeed France or Germany..) to a farmer in Africa or Asia Clare, then tell me who's poor.... youre talking nonsense scott.... the days of 'wealthy farmers' are long gone. the only ones making a profit are the huge corporate estates and thats only by intensive farming. FACT small family farms are going out of business at an alarming rate, you get your head out of the london smog and talk to REAL farmers like i do. many are working 80 hour weeks just to stay afloat.... NO profit there at all... a typical example was that wife swap programme where a fat idle benefits slob swaped with a farmers wife... that cow got more money (by a mile) then this farmer guy (who only kept solvent by his wife working a regualr job) for sitting on her big fat idle arse . the obscene thing was... HE WAS PAYING FOR IT! talk about reverse robin hood psycology. jags and bentleys in a barn?... UTTER BOLLOX. when was the last time you went on a farm?... i go on loads regularly and every one i know drives clapped out bangers. no one works longer hours for barely any profit then our family farmers.
January 11, 200817 yr Author I'll support them so long as they're not involving themselves in dodgy practices that ultimately risks MY health and the health of the nation... And for my mind, this is exactly what battery farming does.... Thousands of chickens, cows, pigs, etc, cooped up (if you'll pardon the pun..), sleeping, eating and living in poor sanitary conditions, being fed poor diets, bodies of dead animals not being dealt with properly (and there is very real documented evidence to support this) does NOT make for a good, healthy diet.... Not just in MY opinion, but in the opinion of medical and nutritional experts... Yeah, it's easy to criticise the likes of Jamie Oliver or this Hugh bloke as well, but at the end of the day, they've got the balls to go out there and confront head on a very real problem which affects all of us, and for that they get my total respect.... again... more $h!t! FACT... our farmers uphold the tightest laws regarding animal welfare in the world! you want to see cruelty then go to your beloved europe <_< even our battery farmed animals are fed well, diseased ones removed, and are reasonably well looked after.... not that i condone battery farming.
January 11, 200817 yr Author That wasn't in reference to you as such, but I know that Jamie Oliver has had a bit of stick in the past from certain ahem, "interests" shall we say..... ;) I'm really getting at this notion that somehow organic or free range food is "elitist" and people like Oliver and Hugh are probably seen as representing this elite because they are such staunch advocates of it, but that's not it at all, they're chefs, they know good nutrition, they know the difference between good and bad food, and that's all it is... Organic and Free Range farming should be the standard.... And it was in this country for literally ages, hundreds of generations.... the latest scientific report into organic/non organic found no difference in nutritional values. persobnally ive found NO difference in taste between them, in fact the method of cooking the meat has more bareing on the taste.
January 15, 200817 yr even our battery farmed animals are fed well, diseased ones removed, and are reasonably well looked after.... Yeah, right, only AFTER they got caught out on a tape filmed by an Animal Rights group who went undercover to expose the horrendous conditions on battery farms... You think these people would do things willingly off their own backs...? Nah, the public has to be wakened up to the facts first, or nothing ever gets changed....
January 15, 200817 yr the latest scientific report into organic/non organic found no difference in nutritional values. persobnally ive found NO difference in taste between them, in fact the method of cooking the meat has more bareing on the taste. I'd like to know who commissioned this report first of all, and what special interest groups (if any) were involved... Personally, I dont believe for a second that processed, battery-farmed, Kentucky Fried c**p or a McDonald's scrotum burger has more nutritional value than a good, healthy organic piece of meat from a reliable, trustworthy farming source... You just have to look at some of the cheap, nasty, pale-looking chickens in places like Sainsburys and Tesco to instinctively know that this aint gonna be too good....
