The Coen Brothers latest film starring Tommy Lee Jones. It looks amazing, and has got to be one of the most critically acclaimed films in years, as it has got 95% on Rottentomatoes, which is very very rare for any film. It is tipped to win several oscars.

I D/L ed a pretty good screener of this.. Absolutely superb film, the Coens back to their best, please no more turds like "The Ladykillers" re-hash lads.. I'm seriously torn now between this, "Assassination of Jesse James...", "Control" and "American Gangster"...... Mind you, not that "Control" has a hope in hell of any Oscars..... <_<

I saw this film last night and it completly blew me away. It chilled me to the core and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing. The guy that portrayed the serial killer displayed one of the best performances I've seen this year (so far) his logic was so warped in the way he justified his killings. it's been nominated for 8 oscar's so it should to well.

How many Oscar's has "American Gangster" been nominated for?

Astonishingly, very few.... -_- I honestly cant understand the total bumming of "Michael Clayton" (which is a good film admittedly but, not really better than cable dramas such as "Damages", "Murder One" or "Law and Order") or "Juno" (which is pretty whimsical, although it does boast a superb performance, but then so did "Scent of a Woman"...)..

and a 1970s Chevy Chase was great as the Spanish actor Javier Bardem!!!

( now that would be a spoof i would like to see  )

I drubbed this movie initially - but revisited it - and liked it a lot more second time.

Bardem is wonderful and, whilst I'm far from a fan of anything Tommy Lee Jones does, his turn as the tired, jaded, smalltown cop is superb, too.

My one downer now is the rather flat ending which, when it happens, always leaves me thinking...oh... is that it?

Poor ending aside, it's great - it's rare for me to alter my opinion on a movie - but on this one I have.

well most great films tend to be ambigious - so that people like we can over-analyse it for years to come on sites like this.

btw for the definitive Bardem perf - get the sea inside - so v tragic so - v sad - so v depressing makes you wanna watch any dumb comedy to get you out of the 'dark'

I dunno, I quite liked the fact that it had an open, ambiguous ending.... You kind of have to think a bit more about it rather than have everything tied up in a neat bow.... The Coens are good at these kind of open endings....

yeah - i thought it would end on a coin toss tho - good that there was another bit at the end - but i can see how the utter utter post-bardem end could fumble loads of people and annoy

I didn't get it at all. I didn't care about anyone in the movie, I wasn't scared by Bardem's character(as unpleasant as he was) and the film just drifted along not really going anywhere. Maybe I also need to watch it again, but on first viewing I was not impressed!
