Posted January 12, 200817 yr I was reading a book yesterday for my degree as part of the course 'Media and Music' and it suggested that Sweden was 'punching above its weight' in terms of musical success...it led me to think that other than the almost complete US/British domination of our charts nowadays, in the last 12 months we have had Robyn Axwell Basshunter Peter Bjorn & John as well as BWO having minor success and Alphabeat surely destined for big things as well as Abba Roxette The Cardigans Ace Of Base Alcazar Eric Prydz all having huge hits in the UK in the past...I completely agree with this book about Sweden's influence on pop music for such a small and seemingly insignificant country :o

From what you named their im a big fan of Robyn, Peter Bjorn and John and BWO. I liked Axwell's single but I havn't heard anything else from them. Alphabeat i've heard about but not heard any of their singles as yet.. Basshunter is awful. I suppose that Sweeden does make some good Pop music (of which i'm not usually a fan)...
January 12, 200817 yr Alphabeat i've heard about but not heard any of their singles as yet.. I suppose that Sweeden does make some good Pop music (of which i'm not usually a fan)... but Alphabeat are Danish (very important to Danes)
January 12, 200817 yr Author but Alphabeat are Danish (very important to Danes) my mistake :arrr: Sweden are also expected to do well at Eurovision every year because of the (usually) high quality of their entries and the extremely high quality of their selection process Melodifestivalen

January 12, 200817 yr Author I always remember Denmark for the immense levels of cheese they have given us over the years: Aqua Infernal Cartoons Whigfield Little Trees DJ Aligator Project Safri Duo Toy-Box Creamy and their more respectable offerings Junior Senior Lazy-B
January 12, 200817 yr Sweden had better send a good pop Eurovision song this year. They were most lacklustre last year and they damn well need to show what amazing pop they can find this year!
January 12, 200817 yr Author I actually really liked The Ark but it was admittedly not to their usual amazing standard...I've liked all of their entries for Eurovision so far this decade apart from 2000 and 2005... 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006 were particular high points
January 12, 200817 yr Don't forget Europe, Eagle-Eye Cherry, and... Meja? As tigerboy said, there are some amazing indiepop artists out of Sweden these days. My favs are The Knife, The Sounds. I'm From Barcelona is among the oddest pop bands in the world  What with IKEA and Volvo and H&M delivering Swedish fashion, style and innovation to the masses, I'd agree that it has a huge influence on pop culture relative to its small size.
January 12, 200817 yr Canada has given us such legends as Bryan Adams and Nickelback :puke2: on a brighter note they have given us Nelly Furtado and Sarah McLachlan  I forgot how much influence Swedish (and other Scandanavian) songwriters had on the manufactured pop music scene of the late 90's and early 00's Canada has the best music scene in the world. fact. ^_^

I always remember Denmark for the immense levels of cheese they have given us over the years: Aqua Infernal Cartoons Whigfield Little Trees DJ Aligator Project Safri Duo Toy-Box Creamy Nina and Frederick!!! and their more respectable offerings Junior Senior Lazy-B btw can Lazyboy ever be respectable if he is out of Aqua?!?!?! i would go for Efterklang, the raveonettes, mew, figurines, oh no ono etc etc As tigerboy said, there are some amazing indiepop artists out of Sweden these days. My favs are The Knife, The Sounds. I'm From Barcelona is among the oddest pop bands in the world  have you got the Labrador 100 album thats supposed to be very good showcase for swedish indiepop - supposed to be like a swedish sarah records with lots of great tweepop stuff on it. What with IKEA and Volvo and H&M delivering Swedish fashion, style and innovation to the masses, I'd agree that it has a huge influence on pop culture relative to its small size. well in comparing Swedish production of music to Volvo Cars - Volvo cars are owned by Ford of America - so thats an american company providing Swedishness - where as Cherion/Maratone/Teddybears etc etc are creating musical productions for loads of American acts - thats like the other way round in production terms (Backstreet Boys, Britiney etc) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Daf_volvo_66.jpg note: this is from the Nedlands - could be an idea for another thread - tho 2 unlimited was that pop creation dutch or from belgium??? or does it depend on whether you looking from a pop view or a faceless dancemusic view
January 17, 200817 yr Author Tigerboy, you might be interested that the current bookies favourite to win Melodifestivalen (and represent Sweden at Eurovision) is Amy Diamond! followed closely by a duet from Carola and Andreas Johnson!

I hope Carola makes it again! :cheer: Have you heard the song yet? I need to find it.

January 17, 200817 yr S.O.A.P are from Denmark too, and they're the best ones, after Aqua :P SOAP released quite a few hit singles in Europe This Is How We Party http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/searc...we-party_family (their biggest hit, also did well in the Hot 100) Not Like Other Girls http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/searc...her-girls_music Ladidi Ladida http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/searc...di-ladida_music Deep In My Heart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBQwx76e2vQ (not official video) Romeo And Juliet (not official video) Soap Is In The Air http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/searc...n-the-air_music (first single from their 2nd album released in 2000) Mr DJ (not official video)
January 19, 200817 yr No but I look forward to hearing it...fingers crossed either those two or BWO go forward for Sweden! Amy Diamond must be bigger than those acts in Sweden though :o but it looks like Alexander Bard is so desperate maybe Isreal could be intested or France... YITlcfhdWAE http://991.com/gallery_180x180/Army-Of-Lovers-Israelism---Maxi-15169-991.jpg "Glory in the circumsicion Oops there goes a Freudian slip Army of Lovers on a mission Forty years of desert trips Drinking from a stinking fountain The kabbala and Jezebel Dancing hora on a mountain Party like a b**ch from hell The heavens cry loud in the open I hear the angels sing Shalom b'Israel shalom b'Israel Shalom la'olam shalom b'Israel" words by Alexander Bard and some other people
