January 18, 200817 yr I reckon this is his strongest single since Irish Blood English Heart... but... does the world really need yet another tacky Morrissey Best of? Surely, by now, his 28th Best Of? It's really extracting the urine IMO.... for an artist who once sang about re-issues, re-packaging etc.... he must surely be eating his words now... in fact, here's the lyrics for Paint A Vulgar Picture.... it's what Morrissey's sold his soul to do, it seems.... the only difference is, Morrissey's still alive and wilfully selling his soul... PAINT A VULGAR PICTURE Lyrics Artist:The Smiths At the record company meeting On their hands - a dead star And oh, the plans they weave And oh, the sickening greed At the record company party On their hands - a dead star The sycophantic slags all say : "I knew him first, and I knew him well" Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package ! Re-evaluate the songs Double-pack with a photograph Extra Track (and a tacky badge) A-list, playlist "Please them , please them !" "Please them !" (sadly, THIS was your life) But you could have said no If you'd wanted to You could have said no If you'd wanted to BPI, MTV, BBC "Please them ! Please them !" (sadly this was your life) But you could have said no If you'd wanted to You could have walked away ...Couldn't you ? I touched you at the soundcheck You had no real way of knowing In my heart I begged "Take me with you ... I don't care where you're going..." But to you I was faceless I was fawning, I was boring Just a child from those ugly new houses Who could never begin to know Who could never really know Oh ... Best of ! Most of ! Satiate the need Slip them into different sleeves ! Buy both, and feel deceived Climber - new entry, re-entry World tour ! ("media whore") "Please the Press in Belgium !" (THIS was your life...) And when it fails to recoup ? Well, maybe : You just haven't earned it yet, baby
January 18, 200817 yr Author One of their best songs ever.   The tracklisting for the GH is shockingly awful: talk about a Greatest Hits that doesn't know the meaning of the word comprehensive.
January 18, 200817 yr A really good song. I agree with Russ, that it is his best song since Irish Blood, English Heart, but as for reissue, repackage, repackage: In the UK alone: Smiths compiliation albums: Hatful of Hollow (1984) The World Won't Listen (1987) Louder Than Bombs (1987 US import) Best I (1992) Best II (1992) Singles (1995) The Very Best of The Smiths (2001) Morrissey compiliation albums: Bona Drag (1990) World of Morrissey (1995) Suedehead: The Best of Morrissey (1997) Greatest Hits (2008)

Louder Than Bombs is a USA compilation and so not really intended for UK consumption so thats probs like the Robbie Williams compilation The Ego Has Landed whereby an album has been compiled from other albums for USA promotion (maybe by a sub-licensee rather than Rough Trade) Now I read in the paper that Rough Trade went bankrupt in about 1990 after its distribution arm went 'clunk'and so they had to sell their Smiths back cat to WEA - [AOL] TimeWarner - Warner Music, who were also the people who were funding Geoff Travis's other indie (tho faux-indie) label Blanco y Negro at the time. so its not Morrissey or Rough Trade to blame - its actually Warners - but then again who can blame them for wanting to get maximum value from their recently purchased 'property'. i guess you would to if you had such a valuble 'commodity' - now wouldnt you. and as for The Very Best of The Smiths, even tho i think there is a bit of trivia that says that Moz wanted Charles Hawtrey to be in one of his videos (was it Ouija Board???) - think Moz was annoyed at using his image on the compilation album - as poss it was such an obv thing for Warners to do. so blame them!! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/ed/SmithsVeryBest.jpg/200px-SmithsVeryBest.jpg If Guy Hands destroys EMI, then its possible that the merger/Warners takeover will be back on the agenda and if and when Edgar Bronfman Jr @ Warners will get his hands on it - that means all of Moz's early solo stuff and smiths recordings will be reunited. in a similar way that his Island (ex-Polygram / indie ) and Attack (ex-Sanctuary) will be reunited under Universal's back cat marketing - so I guess most of this greatest hits album will be made up of ex-Sanctuary recordings with a few of the big hits from EMI. http://www.artistdirect.com/Images/artd/amg/music/bio/428569_ebtg_200x200.jpg also EGTG - this indie to dance act were on Virgin, which is a part of EMI, and were also a blanco y negro act - so thats another op for a comp if the merger goes ahead. and like how Sony BMG has reissued the Sony and BMG albums as a easy to mange boxset now they have merged
