Jamse, just as tsetsi said, I'm watching the new chart on MTV Hits on Monday night.

I agree that "Closer" by Ne-Yo is nothing special and so far it doesn't seem to be that successful around Europe but that doesn't make it certain that it won't go to number 1 - after all, less successful songs have reached the top in European Top 20.

By the way, next week I'll be on holiday so most probably I won't be able to post the new chart.

This weeks chart seems to be more changed and shaked in the top part than the lower.New number one-no surprice to see Gabriella Cilmi taking the crown with Sweet About Me just like she did in her native Australia.Duffy strangely took the bronze medal with this Warwick Avenue which was a bit unexpected.Only a little wonder will stop Kid Rock from being number one i think, just like a song which is not in the chart yet-Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl! The best thing in this edition is to see Laurent Wolf now at 7 with the brilliant No Stress-better later than never, don't you think? Two football theme songs both climbing 3 places-maybe these positions will be their peaks. The only new entry is a bad combination between r&b and rock-Busta Rhymes & Linkin Park made a very annoying track a while ago,but let's hope to go out very soon. Why all rap/hip-hop/r&b artists are always making collaborations by inviting at least two others to "sing" with them? This weeks drop-out is Sam Sparro - Black And Gold.It goes out after 14 weeks,186 points and peak at no.2!Estelle & Kanye West's American Boy spends it's 20th week in the chart at the bottom position, but they are a sure Top 20 for this year.

DISCUSSION QUESTION:

You´ve all seen the MTV Best of Euro Top 20 for the past years. What do you think of the arrangement of these charts?

I don't know if Bobiloko is going to post the new chart, maybe he is still on holiday. That's why i'll do it this week too.

MTV EUROPEAN TOP 20 № 33/16.08.2008

18. ( * ) Dizzie Rascal & Calvin Harris - Dance Wiv Me

19. ( 17 ) Busta Rhymes & Linkin Park - We Made It

20. ( ** ) Leona Lewis - Better In Time

No surprice at all to see Kid Rock as a winner this week.He is the sixth chart debutant this year to be number one after One Republic,Leona Lewis,Duffy,Estelle and Gabriella Cilmi,as she just lost the poll position after one week there.Rihanna moves up again after falling to 6 last time. Also going up surprisingly we have Estelle & Kanye West's American Boy -they move 20-16 in their 21st week in the chart. The biggest movement this week is coming from Madonna.Just days after turning 50 she jumps 9 places to number 9 after struggling in the last 3 places for 3 weeks. The highest new entry comes from the girl who has already have number one hit in the UK,US & Australian charts with her first ever single-Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl is a future winner here,i'm almost sure. Also new in the chart are another former UK number one Dizzie Rascal & Calvin Harris - Dance Wiv Me.Strange to see a re-entry from Leona Lewis.I hope that this is not another mistake in this chart.I got this from Internet, couldn't watch it on Monday.3 songs left the chart:

Madonna & Justin Timberlake-4 Minutes:279 points/15 weeks/peak position 1.(6 weeks)/total weeks:313 & 183

Will I Am & Cheryl Cole-Heartbreaker:39/7/10./13 & 7

Kat DeLuna & Busta Rhymes-Run The Show:3/2/19./2 & 64

This is a total mystery, and i think they are made very randomly without any kind of a system.

I'm back! I watched the chart today and I can confirm that "Better In Time" by Leona Lewis re-enters at number 20. I even think I know the reason for that - while I was on holiday, I passed through Vienna and bought "Better In Time" from there! That must have been enough to make it re-enter the chart! (by the way, I also bought "Blessed" by Fady Maalouf - it's a wonderful song, too)

Regarding Jamse's discussion - the chart for the whole year is absolutely random. The most shocking example is from 1998 - how can "The Way" by Fastball be number 19 for the whole year when it spent a single week at number 15 in MTV European Top 20?!?! And in 2007 there wasn't a chart for the whole year at all (I must admit I don't think we've missed anything by its absence)...

As we wait for Bobiloko's comments here's another question:when Katy Perry's worldwide smash "I Kissed A Girl" take the top(it's not an if,it's when) for how long it would be No.1?Is there a chance for her to challenge or break some records in Euro Top 20?

Here is Bobiloko`s comments for last weeks chart

Here is the chart of August 23, 2008:

20 Dizzee Rascal & Calvin Harris - Dance Wiv Me 2 Down

19 Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air RE-ENTRY

18 Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up NEW

17 Leona Lewis - Better In Time 3 Up

16 Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy Stay =>

15 Enrique Iglesias - Can You Hear Me 1 Down

14 Jason Mraz - I'm Yours 1 Up

13 Chris Brown - Forever 1 Down

12 The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name 1 Down

11 Usher - Love In This Club 1 Down

10 Laurent Wolf - No Stress 2 Down

9 Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl 4 Up

8 Shaggy - Feel The Rush 1 Down

7 Madonna - Give It 2 Me 2 Up

6 Duffy - Warwick Avenue Stay =>

5 Coldplay - Violet Hill 2 Down

4 Ne-Yo - Closer 1 Up

3 Rihanna - Take A Bow 1 Up

2 Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me Stay =>

1 Kid Rock - All Summer Long Stay =>

Kid Rock spends a second consecutive week at number 1 with "All Summer Long". I wonder which song is going to replace it. Can "Sweet About Me" by Gabriella Cilmi return to the top? Or will "Give It 2 Me" become Madonna's secong number 1 from her current album? Or (most probably) it will be "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry, which enters the Top 10 this week...

There is a re-entry in the chart for the second week in a row. "No Air" by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown originally peaked at number 7. Now after four weeks out of the chart it's back in at number 19.

Pussycat Dolls have a very impressive achievement in MTV European Top 20 - SIX singles from their previous album made it to the chart! Only a couple other artists have had six singles from one album in the chart (and in the case of Michael Jackson, even eight)... Now the girls are back with "When I Grow Up" - a horrible song, in my opinion, but it debuts at number 18.

Finally, a record is broken this week! Until now two songs held the record for most weeks in the chart for a song that has peaked at number 10 - "Gotta Get Away" by Offspring and "Love To See You Cry" by Enrique Iglesias, both of which spent 15 weeks in European Top 20. However, now "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, which also has a peak position of number 10, spends its 16th week in the chart! I think the song deserves this record because it was really successful in several European countries (but not all - that's why it didn't peak higher). And it's even climbing one place this week!

11 Laurent Wolf - No Stress 1 Down

10 Jason Mraz - I'm Yours 4 Up

9 Duffy - Warwick Avenue 3 Down

8 Coldplay - Violet Hill 3 Down

7 Shaggy - Feel The Rush 1 Up

6 Ne-Yo - Closer 2 Down

5 Rihanna - Take A Bow 2 Down

4 Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl 5 Up

3 Madonna - Give It 2 Me 4 Up

2 Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me Stay =>

1 Kid Rock - All Summer Long Stay =>

Here comes another ordinary chart where Kid Rock`s reign at the summit of the chart has still not come to an end. It`s the third week running and the entire time he still has Gabriella Cilmi on his back. I think Kate Perry will be the one to melt their triple week solidity by topping the chart and in effect to tsetsi81´s question on how well she will do at the top, I think she could rule for about a month or so but I don`t think she is potential for breaking a record.

There is only one new entry this week as we welcome yet another dance song, this time from Basshunter. He peaked at 13 with “Now You`re Gone” earlier this year and spent only two weeks in the chart then. In the three latest charts we`ve had one new entry in each chart that drops 2 places directly after entering the chart. The victims were Busta Rhymes/LP, Dizzee Rascal and The Pussycat Dolls. Let`s hope this pattern ends for Basshunter.

As Bobiloko already pointed out, we have a record breaking artist in our chart as Jason Mraz has survived the longest in the chart as an artist that peaked at 10, currently 17 weeks and happens to rise to his peak at just number 10. He obviously also holds the record for the most frequency points with now 132 points. No other artist peaking at 10 has more than a 100 points except Another Level`s “Freak Me” 1998 with 101 points accumulated in 12 weeks. With the current status, Jason doesn´t need to watch his back as Leona Lewis who is on her way out this week becomes the second longest surviving artist that peaks at 10 with her 16 weeks but has only collected 77 points along the way.

In my commentary that I posted in May, I had put Estelle and Kanye`s “American Boy” amongst the three worst one week chart toppers but after their chart performance over the summer I now take back what I said and at least according to frequency points put them amongst the three best one week chart toppers. They`ve managed to collect 287 points so far and only Alicia Keys`s “No One” has collected more, 305 points in 21 weeks. They also share the record with longest survival in the chart with The Offspring`s “Self Esteem” by spending 23 weeks each.

This statement is utterly hilarious=)

Let`s wind up with my opinion on my discussion question about the Best of Euro Top 20 charts. Over the years we`ve been led to believe that these charts are meant to consist of songs that performed well during the given year. The idea is to place the song with the longest stay at the top as number 1 and then the second longest staying song at the top as number 2 and so on. The chart will also be powdered with songs that peaked at 2 and performed well usually in the bottom half. Sometimes even artists that didn`t break into Top 2 but performed extremely well otherwise can also be found. It should be a systematic and sensible arrangement. I agree with Bobiloko and tsetsi81 that the charts are arranged at random not to mention carelessly and are full of mistakes. For the Chart of 2004, Kelis`s “Milkshake” was placed as number 1 and the presenter said that it had topped the chart for 6 weeks when in fact it had only ruled for half as many. It was The BEP`s “Shut Up” that topped for 6 weeks and deserved that spot. For 2005, what is The PCD`s “Don`t Cha” doing at number 4? Despite all this, I must congratulate the person who arranged the lists for 2002 and 2003; they did a pretty good job.

songs I think should've charted recently or a while ago:

September - Cry For You

Madcon - Beggin'

Lady GaGa - Just Dance

Alphabeat - Fascination

Kate Ryan - Ella Elle L'a

oh and All I Ever Wanted doesnt deserve to chart if Daddy DJ missed this chart back in 2000/2001 when it was a much bigger hit than this version. But then the chart in 2001 was very anti-dance.

Wow, that's strange. I was sure I had posted my comments for last week's chart here... Thank you for posting them, Jamse!

I think Jason Mraz's achievement is absolutely remarkable. In fact, reaching a new peak position is not out of the question!

I'd also like to point out the sudden 20-15 reclimb of "Dance Wiv Me". This year the chart might not be as interesting as last year but at least you never know when a song is really on its way out of the chart (another proof - some surprising re-entries).

As for tsetsi's question - well, it all depends on the competition. If no other big hits appear in the near future, "I Kissed A Girl" might spend quite some time at the top indeed. After all, if it weren't for Kid Rock and Katy Perry herself, Gabriella Cilmi would have had a very long reign at number 1, I suppose...

You may find this strange , but it's a fact : Estelle & Kanye West's "American Boy" is now amongst the 20 longest chart sitters. If they spend one more week they will be alltime top 10!Here is how this alltime chart looks right now:

1. ( 29 ) Las Ketchup - The Ketchup Song (Aserejé) ( 497 points )

2. ( 29 ) Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love ( 316 )

3. ( 28 ) Nelly Furtado - Say It Right ( 416 )

4. ( 27 ) Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music ( 464 )

5. ( 26 ) Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe ( 330 )

6. ( 25 ) Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds ( 278 )

7. ( 24 ) Shakira & Wyclef Jean - Hips Don't Lie ( 321 )

8. ( 24 ) The Rasmus - In The Shadows ( 165 )

9. ( 23 ) Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head ( 398 )

10. ( 23 ) Rihanna - S.O.S. ( 355 )

11. ( 23 ) Snap - Rhythm Is A Dancer ( 329 )

12. ( 23 ) Outkast - Hey Ya! ( 290 )

13. ( 23 ) Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy ( 287 )

14. ( 23 ) Offspring - Self Esteem ( 275 )

15. ( 23 ) Lighthouse Family - High ( 268 )

16. ( 22 ) Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise ( 435 )

17. ( 22 ) Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around ( 405 )

18. ( 22 ) Bon Jovi - Always ( 400 )

19. ( 22 ) Eminem - Lose Yourself ( 366 )

20. ( 22 ) Aqua - Barbie Girl ( 345 )

We have to wait until Monday at 00.00 CET to watch it on MTV Hits.It seems that again they won't update the chart information on mtv.de/charts before the premiere on tv.....
still nothing?

You sound anxious...I`ll give you the top 10 as we wait for the complete chart...1 Gabriella Cilmi 2 Kid Rock 3 Katy Perry 4 Ne-Yo 5 Madonna 6 Jason Mraz 7 Rihanna 8 Shaggy 9 Coldplay 10 Jordin Sparks

The top10 I already know, I just wanna know 11-20. That's the most interesting part of the chart with the new entries
