November 25, 200816 yr I think Dear Mr President was just a hit in G/A/S. Most Girls and Just Like A Pill should definitely have charted, especially the latter which is one of her biggest hits.
November 25, 200816 yr Author I dreamt that next week "Whatever You Like" by T.I. will re-enter the chart at number 11 while "Live Your Life" will climb to number 8... While that's unlikely to happen, I won't be too surprised to see "Whatever You Like" re-enter the chart while "Live Your Life" is in it - similar things have happened to Nicole Scherzinger and Rihanna during the past twelve months... I have a question to everyone who followed the chart in 2001 - which song by Atomic Kitten do you think was at number 8 in the chart of August 25, 2001? Until then "Whole Again" had an impressive 17-week stay in the chart. But in the chart of August 18 it fell 6-13. And then suddenly in the chart of August 25 there was a song by Atomic Kitten at number 8. And after that, in the chart of September 1 it was indisputably "Eternal Flame" that was at number 6. The only logical conclusion is that "Whole Again" left the chart from number 13 and was replaced by "Eternal Flame", which debuted at number 8 and climbed to number 6 the following week. It's absolutely unbelievable that "Whole Again" would climb 13-8, then leave the chart and immediately be replaced by "Eternal Flame" entering straight at number 6... The only thing which makes me wonder is that... when MTV Europe broadcast the edition of August 25, they played "Whole Again" at number 8!? Of course, sometimes MTV have made mistakes when broadcasting the chart... but I just want to know your opinion on this situation.
November 25, 200816 yr I'm gonna say Eternal Flame debuted at #8 and MTV played the wrong song. That's what the archives say.
November 25, 200816 yr I`ve been aware of that error and I´ve simply accepted the correction in Markus Tolksdorf`s archive. I don´t remember the presenter presenting "Eternal Flame" as a new entry when it was number 6. I suppose that was it`s second week in the chart...
December 2, 200816 yr Author Here is the chart of November 29, 2008: 20 Katy Perry - Hot 'N' Cold NEW 19 Jack White & Alicia Keys - Another Way To Die NEW 18 Madonna - Give It 2 Me 2 Down 17 Beyoncé Knowles - If I Were A Boy NEW 16 T.I. & Rihanna - Live Your Life 3 Up 15 Lady GaGa - Just Dance 4 Down 14 Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me 4 Down 13 The Killers - Human 4 Up 12 Kanye West - Love Lockdown 3 Up 11 Sugababes - Girls 2 Down 10 Guru Josh Project - Infinity 2008 2 Up 9 Britney Spears - Womanizer 5 Up 8 Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up 2 Down 7 Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire 1 Up 6 Rihanna - Disturbia 1 Down 5 Madcon - Beggin' 2 Up 4 The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved 1 Down 3 Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl 1 Up 2 Coldplay - Viva La Vida Stay => 1 Pink - So What Stay => Just two weeks ago the chart was looking... somehow strange. But during during these two weeks there have been seven new entries which ALL deserve to be in MTV European Top 20... so now the chart looks almost normal! Let's talk about this week's three new entries. "Hot 'N' Cold" by Katy Perry debuts at the bottom of the chart while "I Kissed A Girl" returns to the Top 3... "Hot 'N' Cold" will have a hard time achieving as much success as its predecessor! I'm really happy about the new entry at number 19 because I was starting to think it would never make it to the chart... "Another Way To Die" by Jack White and Alicia Keys is the fourth James Bond song to appear in European Top 20 since 1992. The first (and most successful - it reached number 3) was "Goldeneye" by Tina Turner; the second one was "James Bond Theme" by Moby; and the last one was "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell... You read it right - "Die Another Day" by Madonna didn't make it to this chart! "Another Way To Die" (somewhat similar title, don't you think?) is Jack White's first appearance as a solo artist in European Top 20. He has been in the chart once as a part of The White Stripes - "Icky Thump" scored a single week at number 17 last year. The highest new entry (at number 17) is Beyoncé's "If I Were A Boy". She was last seen in the chart with "Beautiful Liar", her duet with Shakira, which went to number 1. I suppose "If I Were A Boy" is a contender to do the same in the future... I also want to mention a song that leaves the chart this week. "No Air" by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown set a new record - most weeks in the chart for a song that has peaked at number 7. Its total of 25 weeks in the chart is absolutely incredible, however you look at it. It's even more impressive that another song also spent 25 weeks in the chart this year - "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz (it peaked at number 6 and also set a record for chart longevity). And probably the most interesting fact is that "No Air" and "I'm Yours" debuted in MTV European Top 20 in one and the same week! Otherwise, "So What" by Pink spends a comfortable second week at the top. The likely contenders are nowhere near - "Womanizer" by Britney Spears is at number 9 and "Infinity 2008" by Guru Josh Project - at number 10. By the way, Britney seems to be the more dangerous threat now as she climbs 5 places as opposed to the modest 2-place climb of Guru Josh...

But recently I had started wondering whether the chart really was that great then. In most of the weeks there were just one or two new entries (although for the most part there were two, it has to be said)... Could it be that I loved that year just because I started to watch the chart then? Not that this wasn't a good reason... Well, now that I'm looking at this week's edition of European Top 20, I understand what was great about the chart in 2000 - THE MOVEMENTS! Yes, in 2000 it was very common to see big climbs and falls - and often many of them in one week. I know it's subjective but right now I'm going to define a "big" climb or fall as going 5+ places up or down the chart. And in this respect, this week's chart really reminds me of the chart in 2000 - there are SEVEN big movements! Now this is in stark contrast to the rest of this year and especially the last several months, when you would be lucky to find two big movements in one edition of the chart!... When was the last time there were seven 5+ climbs and falls in one chart? In the chart of August 11, 2007 - more than a year ago! I have to say that when there are so many big movements all at once, I can't be disappointed by the fact that there is just one new entry - that was why I loved MTV European Top 20 in 2000, that's why I love this week's chart. The current new entry is "Keeps Gettin' Better" by Christina Aguilera, who was last seen in European Top 20 at the very beginning of 2008 with "Oh Mother"... which, however, broke the record for least weeks in the chart for a song that has peaked at number 8 - just two weeks! Now let's talk about the big movers. The biggest faller is "Girls" by Sugababes, going 11-18. That's not surprising as the song wasn't really successful in Europe (most probably because it was only released in the UK and Ireland)... And the biggest climber is... well, there are actually three of them, each climbing 8 places! "Hot 'N' Cold" by Katy Perry goes 20-12 while "If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé Knowles goes 17-9. Both of them were new entries last week and these jumps should be a sign for things to come - expect to see them much higher in the near future! What about the third biggest climber? Let me first mention that "So What" by Pink becomes replaced at the top after spending just two weeks there... OK, the new number 1 is "Womanizer" by Britney Spears, her second for 2008 after "Piece Of Me" and ELEVENTH in total... An impressive achievement! But the most spectacular thing is the way "Womanizer" conquers the top - it goes 9-1! This is the biggest climb to number 1 since "Hung Up" by Madonna went 14-1 at the end of 2005. And now something curious - "So What" by Pink reached the top by going 7-1. So one big climber to number 1 has been replaced by another! When did that last happen before? Remember, only 5+ climbs to the top are considered. Well, the answer is: in my beloved year 2000. "Cartoon Heroes" by Aqua went 6-1... and two weeks later it was replaced by "Pure Shores" by All Saints, which went 7-1. But that's not all! "Womanizer" becomes the 18th new number 1 of the year (i.e., songs that have also been at the top during the previous year are not counted). There were also 18 chart-toppers in 2006. Only two years have had more number ones - 1992 (19) and 2005 (21). Obviously, 2005's record won't be broken. The question is: will there be at least one more number 1 this year? "If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé will surely pose a threat but maybe not until the year is over. However, there is another big climber, going 5 places up to number 5... It will be really interesting if "Infinity 2008" by Guru Josh Project manages to reach the top - it has done very well across Europe... and there hasn't been a number 1 with a similar sound in recent years.

December 16, 200816 yr Author Here is the chart of December 13, 2008: 20 Sugababes - Girls 2 Down 19 Leona Lewis - Forgive Me NEW 18 Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up 5 Down 17 Lady GaGa - Just Dance Stay => 16 Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire 5 Down 15 Christina Aguilera - Keeps Gettin' Better 4 Up 14 Kanye West - Love Lockdown Stay => 13 Rihanna - Disturbia 3 Down 12 Jack White & Alicia Keys - Another Way To Die 4 Up 11 The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved 4 Down 10 T.I. & Rihanna - Live Your Life 5 Up 9 Katy Perry - Hot 'N' Cold 3 Up 8 Madcon - Beggin' 2 Down 7 Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl 3 Down 6 Coldplay - Viva La Vida 3 Down 5 Guru Josh Project - Infinity 2008 Stay => 4 Pink - So What 2 Down 3 The Killers - Human 5 Up 2 Beyoncé Knowles - If I Were A Boy 7 Up 1 Britney Spears - Womanizer Stay => One new entry this week. "Forgive Me" by Leona Lewis debuts at number 19. This is the follow-up to "Better In Time", which broke the record for most weeks in the chart for a song that has peaked at number 10 - 19 weeks. Not to mention that "Bleeding Love" is the joint record holder for most weeks in the chart ever (29!)... Will "Forgive Me" also break a longstayer record? I doubt it, especially as I expect "Run" to also appear soon in the chart... "Another Way To Die" by Jack White and Alicia Keys climbs to number 12 and becomes the second highest-peaking James Bond song. It has already surpassed the peak positions of "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell (number 18) and "James Bond Theme" by Moby (number 13). Only "Goldeneye" by Tina Turner remains ahead with its peak of number 3... but I don't think "Another Way To Die" will beat that! Britney Spears remains for a second week at number 1 with "Womanizer". What about the contenders? "Infinity 2008" by Guru Josh Project disappointingly stays at number 5 but there are two big climbs to the Top 3: "Human" by The Killers goes 8-3 and becomes their biggest hit by far in MTV European Top 20. Their previous highest peaking song was "When You Were Young", which reached number 8. However, the biggest threat is "If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé, which jumps 7 places to number 2. Who knows, it might be at the top as early as next week...

December 23, 200816 yr A quick question for tsetsi81 and Bobiloko: I`ve seen that the chart of 080705 has been edited. I thought Mint Royale entered at number 16 whilst OneRepublic was number 15. Was this proven wrong?
