How do people think this will affect the ESC? I reckon it's quite a fair way of doing things, but I suppose we could end up with all the good songs in one seim-final! That time zone idea was kinda destined to fail though, and if they'd done something like that last year we would've got a load of absolute $h!te coming through from western Europe!

Ok pots have been decided... three countries from each pot will go to one semi and the other three to the other. The pots are well organised - knocked the neighbourly/diasporia voting right on the head!

Pot 1

Albania

Bosnia-Herzegovina

Croatia

FYR Macedonia

Montenegro

Slovenia

Pot 2

Denmark

Estonia

Finland

Iceland

Norway

Sweden

Pot 3

Belgium

Bulgaria

Cyprus

Greece

The Netherlands

Turkey

Pot 4

Andorra

Ireland

Latvia

Lithuania

Portugal

Romania

Pot 5

Armenia

Belarus

Georgia

Israel

Moldova

Russia

Ukraine

Pot 6

Azerbaijan

Czech Republic

Hungary

Malta

Poland

San Marino

Switzerland

The 38 countries represented in the two Eurovision Song Contest semi finals have been entered into six pots, based on geographic location and mathematical voting patterns since 2004. From each pot, the countries will be divided between the two semi finals.

From the two pots with seven countries, three from one pot will be joined by four countries from the other and vice versa. Both semi finals will therefore have 19 competing countries, who will battle for ten places in the final.

The top nine countries from each semi final by way of the traditional voting pattern will qualify. They will be joined by the highest placed country as voted for by the back-up juries that did not finish in the top nine from the televote result.

At the beginning of the draw, two envelopes with 'Semi-Final 1' and 'Semi-Final 2' will be drawn. The country left in Pot 5 takes part in the Semi-Final that is written in the first envelope. The country left in Pot 6 takes part in the Semi-Final that is written in the second envelope.

A good idea is to put every single country that is participating including the 4 big counties into the pots as well, it be much fairier in the end.

This is only for the semi-finals though Mikey, and the big four (and Serbia) are already automatically into the final. ^_^ And I don't think the UK, France, Germany or Spain would agree with having to go through the semi-finals given the amount of money we pump into it!

If they're using the voting stats for the pots*, how did they decide to put Azerbaijan and San Marino - both of whom are making their debut appearance in Eurovision this year - in Pot 6?

Personally, I'd have put all of them in one pot and drawn them out one by one.

* - Why else would Ireland and Lithuania be in the same pot, since the former gave the latter their 12 in both 2006 shows and the 2007 Final?

I think Pot 6 is the "leftover" pot. It's made up either of newcomers (Czech Republic from last year, San Marino and Azerbaijan from this year), and countries that obviously haven't shown any particular trend in their voting. Obviously not every country fits precisely into a pot.

reading statements from media in english language is quite hard 4 me...but if i'm not mistaken Russia ain't got automatically into The Final?

it's a pity if so! :(

No they aren't. Only the winners (Serbia) and the BIG 4 (UK, Spain, France & Germany) automaticaly go into the final.
