Posted January 21, 200817 yr Stiff Records - free CD over the weekend with the Independent Paper (tho its probs on one of those weird ecodiscs like the dvds this weekend) on TV tonight on BBC Four from 00.40am with 'If It Ain’t Stiff' - the documentary in which Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and Captain Sensible look back at their time with Stiff Records. and 'Stiff & Co at the BBC' - Performances on the Old Grey Whistle Test, In Concert and TOTP from the likes of Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Madness, The Pogues, Kirsty MacColl, Jona Lewie and others. On after Pop Britiania from 9pm tho does anyone know who actually owns Stiff Records now?? some state that it was taken over by ZTT /sarm Studios / Travor Horn, and other reports said it was taken over by Island - tho in the Independent article about record labels Frankie Goes To Hollywood was listed as being an Island album but in Rip It Up book it under ZTT / Travor Horn. and where does Salvo / Union Square Music come into it? they've put out the big Stiff Box compilation - so are they actually Stiff Records now???
January 23, 200817 yr I love the Stiff label - they launched some of the finest acts in the late 70s/early 80s.... this free CD will be well-worth getting.
January 27, 200817 yr For anyone who's forgotten - go get the Independent today for the 2nd of the Stiff discs.... they're nothing short of brilliant..... and I'd forgotten how great 'Is Vic There?' by Department S and Jona Lewie's 'You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties' sound.... lene Lovich's 'Home', too - superb stuff.
