Liverpool residents vent anger at Ringo

Liverpool residents have complained about comments made by Ringo Starr on Tonight With Jonathan Ross.

The former Beatles drummer followed his performance at the city's Capital of Culture launch last week by telling Ross that he had no plans to return to live in the North-West.

He told Ross that comments he made during the gig at St George's Hall about being "close" to returning were to please the "excited" audience.

Starr said: "Look I love Liverpool. I was a child in Liverpool. I grew up in Liverpool. My family members are in Liverpool. But you know...

"I had to tell the audience, as it was so excited, that I was this close to coming back. But I had a great time up there at the weekend [during the opening ceremony]. I did."

Residents and local leaders have complained to The Liverpool Echo that Starr has simply been 'cashing in' on Liverpool's Capital of Culture branding.

One member of the public said: "I am disgusted by the way he mocked Liverpool after having the red carpet rolled out for him by the city only last week.

"He is happy enough to turn up here after 40 years to blatantly cash in on the city of culture tag but then slags the place off when he is safely back in London schmoozing with Jonathan Ross.

Councillor Mike Storey said: "It's hugely disappointing and sad. It's disappointing someone who came to lead Capital of Culture year should go away and be so negative about it."

What did you make of Ringo's comments?

I think he could have phrased what he said a bit better, but I guess he's used to living abroad so its doubtful he would ever contemplate going back to Liverpool to live. Lots of people leave home and never return to live there, I have no plans to ever to return to my home(birth) town, there is nothing there for me, and I have been away so long I would get lost  .

Back to Ringo though, he probably thought that by telling the truth people would understand him, how stupid was that. Looks like he underestimated the folk from Liverpool, you think he would have expected that.

I don't think it was what he said about not missing Liverpool. If I had heaps of money, I'd probably choose to live in Henley on Thames or Gerrards Cross too. Its the fact that he was quite happy to be paid to come back to Liverpool - he could have put on an act for at least a few months into the 'Capital of Culture' thing. As much as I like the bloke - he's a bit of fun - he really ought to realise that he owes the fact that people know him down to the talent of Lennon & McCartney (OK - and maybe Thomas the Tank Engine too).

I mean - not only was Ringo not necessarily the best drummer in the world ... he really wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles.
