Honoured to be made an ambassador for Nelson Mandela's 46664 campaign – which, she says proudly, she's known about for years - it's important to Jamelia that she's not just putting her name to a cause for the wrong reasons.

"Once you're involved", she says, "you need to make solid commitment”.

And that's what she has done. She is passionate about her admiration for Nelson Mandela too.

"He has a lovely smile and is adorable", she said, "and for someone who's been in prison for 27 years, he's an amazing man".

Relaxed before her set, she was kicking back in a pair of stylish patent leather boots, which, she admitted, almost with pride, were not from Gucci or Prada, but the high street chain River Island. She foxed our presenter, Jacqui Joseph, with that one.

And now that she's a mum, she can't go on tour without something to remind her of her kids. And it isn't a picture. Jamelia remembers her offspring by taking one of their towels with her – "the little mermaid one", she says, "and it smells of them".

aw @ her taking their towels.
