Posted January 26, 200817 yr Why isn't Beverley Knight a hugely successful artist? She has a lot of soul, a great voice, she's a lovely person and she's been around for a long time. She's also been on some program that was watched by millions and she always seems to be touring and she promotes her singles and albums and hard as she can. So why doesn't she have anything so much as a top 5 single or album to her name? I know it doesn't matter really, as long as she is still releasing material I'm happy, but why doesn't she have a huge fan-base or much commercial success yet? It's a shame that there are less talented artists, like Leon, out there getting #1 singles? Even though I like them as well, even people like Rihanna and Britney don't have a voice as good as Beverley yet they nearly always reach the top 10 with their singles because they are really well known. I just find it a shame that people like Beverley Knight and Joss Stone aren't as successful as a lot of people in the charts even though they could out-sing most of the people performing better than themselves. I'm sorry if this seems a bit rant-ish but I was just thinking about Beverley Knight last night and I was asking myself why she isn't huge in the UK, when she quite clearly should be with her talent.
January 26, 200817 yr I 100% agree its really annoying, the Affirmation era should have sold alot more even though it was a success it deserved even more. As for the MSC era well I dont think any of the songs had the potential for top 5 :( After You maybe
January 26, 200817 yr Yeah, this is confusing. She's been around ages, she always seems to be making or releasing music, she promotes when her music does come out and most people "like a bit of Beverley Knight." So why doesn't it convert into sales? Confusing :(
January 28, 200817 yr It's just a mystery, Shes got an amzing voice, I think she looks stunning, and the majority of the songs are amazing, not to mention the fact that she is absoutley brilliant Live. In fairness though I haven't bought much of her material, I STILL need to ger Music City Soul!
January 30, 200817 yr She's been trying for ages, I don't understand why she hasn't broken through. 'Greatest Day' is one of the first singles I remember back when I started getting into music. Still, the soul genre rarely hits it big unless its off the back of hype (Adele/Amy Winehouse/Corinne Bailey Rae etc)... Beverley just hasn't had that hype I guess. Anyway Beverley should still be happy of the long career she's carved for herself. ^_^
February 2, 200817 yr It is quite annoying that she hasn't had the success she deserves. She has has had a lot of critical acclaim and achieved longevity though. How many other female British singers have managed to sustain a 13 year career? I think superbossanova had a very valid point about Bev not having had the same hype behind her that a lot of other artists have had. That hype doesn't always lead to a long career, for example, where is Shola Ama now? She was really hyped but flopped after her first album. It's funny cos a lot of people regard Bev as an "album's artist" but her album sales haven't been great really. Her most successful studio album 'Who I Am' sold around 250k. February 3, 200817 yr This is a question I have asked myself a billion times. She has amazing songs and an amazing voice. An album like Affirmation deserved to go at least double platinum. Come As You Are deserved to be a Top3 single if I ever heard one. Strictly baffling.
February 5, 200817 yr Aww poor Bev. whenever i hear her songs on the radio i feel so bad for her cos' they never really get anywhere! I wonder why that is. The first single i bought of hers was that 'Get Get up' in 2001. lol i may have got that title wrong! Its not fair, She's a local girl as well, Wolverhampton, 20 mins away from Walsall where i live :)
May 14, 200916 yr I've asked myslef this question for years.. oh well, she's happy where's she's at and she has all the critical acclaim she deserves. It's just that we live in a throw away society where it's all about image, sexing it up and releasing absolutely sh*t music with catchy melodies... Bev is what I would regard as one of the last ''true artists'' to come from these isles.. Since Bev we've had an extremely little amount of talent and huge amounts of tuneless, non creative, untalented people like spice girls who are very pretty and would do anything to sell an album.. Bev isn't about that, she's about the music as music should be - an art form.. Singers today see music as a way to make a quick buck and we end up with utter shyte like rihanna and britney.. She's an incredible artist akin to that of Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan but born totally into the wrong age. I honestly believe bev is the most talented female artist this country has ever produced.. Music really isn't about music anymore... There are very few artists out there who are pushing out genuinely good work in terms of lyrical content, emotional delivery, vocal ability etc.. Even what I would consider as this generations best artists like xtina and beyonce arent making decent music, they're releasing utter sh*tty music and dressing like dirty sl*gs in order to appeal to the masses, make money and rip us all off... sad how we have allowed ourselves to become so shallow as a nation. Farewell to good music

Farewell to good music I admittedly enjoy music from basically all of the artists you just slated but I agree with everything you just said. I definitely get the vibe that she's just happy to make music whether she goes top 5 or top 50, she just seems to love performing and creating music. It's not about being all over the charts or in the public eye. I mean, I'm sure she'd love to be really big (she does a lot of promo for almost every single and album release) but it doesn't seem to be her main focus. You're right about her being born in the wrong era, she would have probably been huge along with Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner but in these days of autotuning image is more important than voice and soul isn't as fashionable. I know it makes us as her fans seem pretentious but it's true. You wouldn't have got Rihanna or Britney breaking through 20 years ago, you could get a random girl from the street to sing their songs and sound good with a bit of tweaking. That's probably what they did anyway, it's not like they have much input to their material. It's mostly a case of picking the best demos you were sent.
