Looks like Beyonce is sticking to her album-then-film formula. Blackvoices reported that the singer will portray famed singer Etta James in the upcoming film Cadillac Records. The soul singer is mostly known for her classic record “At Last”.

The film explores Chicago in the 1950s and Leonard Chess, founder of the South Side Chicago blues label Chess Records. The piece charts the rise and fall of legendary artists who were part of the label including James, Muddy Waters, Chess, Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf and Elvis Presley. Jeffrey Wright, Columbus Short, and Cedric The Entertainer have also been signed on.

Filming will take place in New Jersey and Mississippi…

at last... nice song.

Etta James to coach Beyoncé for film

Friday, February 22 2008, 16:03 GMT

By Beth Hilton, Entertainment Reporter

Etta James is to coach Beyoncé Knowles for her role in forthcoming movie Cadillac Records.

Knowles will play the blues legend in the film, which tells the story of Chicago-based record company Chess Records and the activities of its major stars, which included Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry.

James, 70, said she was unsure about the singer's abilities until she watched her duet with Tina Turner at the Grammy Awards.

She told PageSix: "I have my own way of putting those songs over, and I was just wondering if Beyoncé could, and my son said, 'They're thinking about how she looks, but mama, she can really sing!'

"It's a privilege and an honour to have somebody like that girl. I don't think she looks like me, but that's all right. They can fix that up. I kinda have a man's voice. It's a contralto, more bluesy, religious. I would really like to work with her on that."

However, she added that Knowles had an uphill struggle portraying her turbulent life, which has included a long battle with heroin addiction.

She said: "Oh my god, she's going to have a hill to climb, because Etta James ain't been no angel! I can tell Beyoncé some things; some of the things I might not tell her.

"I wasn't as bourgie as she is, she's bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she's like a model. I wasn't like that... I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her."

oOo i'm excited for this film :) even though it wont be released for ages i reckon

Let's hope she does a better job of playing Etta James than she does of singing her songs.
Ah man, I thought you had a trailer or something. But anyway, she looks...different in that picture. I am not use to seeing Beyonce like that LOL. I'm looking forward to seeing this film, I've seen quite a few pictures of her and I think her acting has improved a lot more.

Very serious.

It was flat and terrible compared to the original.

I cannot wait for this movie. Dream Girls was fantastic. Hopefully this will be better :D

Beyoncé has donated her pay cheque from new movie Cadillac Records to a drug rehabilitation centre.

The singer visited New York's Phoenix House to research her role of Etta James, who battled a heroin addiction.

The star was moved to tears after meeting with six African-American women who were at the substance abuse charity.

Darnell Martin, director of the movie, confirmed that Beyoncé would be donating her pay cheque to the charity.

The centre's spokesman, Karen Sodomick, told Giant magazine that the singer would also donate some of her time. "She and her mum suggested cosmetology for our skills-training program," she said. "We're working with them now to make it happen."
