Chart Commentary

Feedback stays at #1 for a second week, soundly beating off all oncomers, including a strong charge from winner of the Sound of 2008 poll Adele's first hit single, Chasing Pavements, which stalls at #2 in an uncommon reflection of the UK Singles Chart, but was far further behind the #1 in this case, being over 100,000 sales short of #1. Following behind is Cassie's contribution to the Step Up 2 OST, Is It You?, which has duly become her biggest hit by far, beating Me & U's peak of #11 in 2006, although whether it will make #1 is now uncertain due to the withdrawal of an official release date now. Climbing one place to #4 is Rihanna's Don't Stop the Music, which is now her 2nd largest hit never to make #1 (behind Unfaithful, which peaked at #2 in the summer of 2006) and the 2nd biggest hit from her current album, ahead of Shut Up and Drive (#5) and Hate That I Love You (#16). No prizes for guessing the biggest hit from the album. Rounding out the top 5 is Britney's Piece of Me, which falls to #5, its lowest position thus far after Britney's 6 non-consecutive weeks at #2 and one-week stint at #1 two weeks ago. This week's highest climber goes to the runner-up of the Sound of 2008 poll, Duffy, who climbs 11 places with her 'debut' single (strictly speaking, Rockferry was her debut single, although did little upon release) to #10 on sales of 60,847, looking a strong contender for a top 3 position upon physical release. This week's highest new entry is a divine collaboration between Mark Brown and Sarah Cracknell of Saint Etienne, The Journey Continues, which enters at #14 and makes strong use of Sarah's unique and classy vocals as well as an instantly recognisable sample from a recent Lloyds TSB advert. This week's tip of the week however goes to Goldfrapp, with a new single showcasing a change in direction from their previous glam-dance fusion, taking on a more ambient and folky approach for the sublime new single A&E, which enters at #19. Don't be surprised to see this one challenging for the top 5 next week.
