I think we all had our own favourites from the Live Twice New York photoshoot but not many people would have chosen that one. For me, there's no warmth to it. It as if he's staring at the camera.

I am looking forward to seeing him in the photoshots in character - its hard to imagine till you see him in the role, I am sure, especially for people who didnt see him in Chicago or Guys and Dolls, a picture from two years ago - especially that one gives no idea of how dashing he looks !! and 18..he has never looked 18 to me, although most 18 yr olds look 12 to me these days
not the best, it has no character to it. not like the great personal pictures taken, when he just oozes warmth and character

Darius stars as new Rhett Butler

Darius Danesh took time out of his career to take an acting course

Former Pop Idol contestant Darius Danesh has said how surprised he was to get the role of Rhett Butler in a new stage production of Gone with the Wind.

"I was thinking they're going to give it to a really big film star. I really couldn't believe it. It was a real shock," Danesh told GMTV.

He will join Jill Paice as Scarlett O'Hara in the Trevor Nunn production which opens in London in April.

Gone with the Wind was published in 1936 and turned into a film in 1939.

Butler was played by Clark Gable in the movie, and Danesh admitted it is a challenging role to take on.

"He's a rogue, a rough diamond, and it's a character that I'm overwhelmed to say that I'm playing in the production.

"I only found out I got the role four days ago. It was a really coveted role and Sir Trevor Nunn is probably the greatest living stage director," he said.

"Cream of the crop"

Danesh has appeared on stage in musical theatre, having played Billy Flynn in Chicago in London's West End. In 2007 he took over as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls.

"I'm very lucky to be taking on this role because Sir Trevor had the cream of the crop. The auditions were in New York and London.

"It was three months of the most intense process I've ever been through," said Danesh.

The Glasgow-born singer revealed he has been taking acting classes for the last two years in Los Angeles to learn the Meisner Technique.

The film won ten Oscars and remains an American classic

His main co-star Jill Paice has already worked with Sir Trevor, appearing in his production of The Woman in White.

Gone with the Wind tells the story of southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, whose idyllic lifestyle is shattered when President Lincoln's demands to end slavery trigger the American Civil War.

The film won 10 Academy Awards and has been named the most successful movie of all time at the US box office by film trade journal Screen Digest.

Rehearsals begin in a week's time with the first show on 4 April.

Darius was speaking from US on GMTV this morning talking about the part and how he was sworn to a secrecy agreement for 3 months. He said when he got the call, he didn't really believe it was to tell him he's got the part and fully expected it to go to a more high profile actor.

He looked very good too.

I wonder what the New York auditions were for - maybe in the latter stages to compare the London guys and the American ones side by side or to work with Jill Paice to see which ones gelled better? She's just left "Curtains" on Broadway.

It's funny how Sir Trevor Nunn knew exactly whom he wanted for his Scarlett and had to interview loads of people for Rhett whereas in the original film Clark Gable was the right one but he was a big star in the studio system and MGM had to be persuaded to let him do it.

Found the name Meisener on wikipedia. long write up together with lisy of trained actors

That'll be the one, thanks. I'll take a look.

I have to confess I sort of knew Darius was auditioning in the West End round about the middle of January. It was on a blog in Mr Showbiz from Closer's own name. He was in LA and through a mutual friend he'd met up and had coffee with Natasha. She'd let it slip that Darius had had to stay on in London because he was doing auditions. She said that Darius felt at home in the West End ( maybe as opposed to doing films?) Maybe Natasha realised she shouldn't have said anything, because she made it sound as if he was auditioning for several shows. She said he been in to 'see' several shows and had had recalls.

I didn't want to get hopes up. I reckoned we'd hear when he got his next lead role.

They are discussing D for this role and dont appear to have seen GMTV this morning. am tempted to direct then to the video on rachels site bcause they would realise he has been studying for two years and a number are still thinking of the pop idol era etc. but thought rachel might not like it.

He'd already worked with her before and on other things. She also took part in the wrkshop for the feasibility of this.

Some have never seen Darius do anything else and most of them I bet have only seen the clips that have been repeated ad nauseam. There's no point in bothering with them.

They've ranted on the net for 6 years thinking they can destroy him. It's like the bullies at school. He just kept his dignity and got up their noses by not responding and not giving them the reaction they wanted either.

Do they think that Trevor Nunn is going to say "oh people are doubting you, I'll get someone else"?

I love going onto the bbc news page, entertainment and seeing a pic of him on there. Little things keep me happy.

There's been so few photos since Guys and Dolls.

If we'd known what he was up to, we'd have been more content. It was puzzling to see Natasha out and about on her own so often.

He did say that he was so busy he found it hard fitting everything in. I should, perhaps, have asked him for his schedule.

Is this the first regurgitation of D's interview? At least it seems accurate.

I really hate it when journalists take his words out of context and put their own imaginative negative spin on them
