My lord that Top 40 sucked enormously!!

There were some bright moments much lower down like Nirvana, Spacemen 3 and The Manics but no wonder I wasn't listening to chart music at the time.

Kylie and Nomad are stone-cold classics in my book! I will say, this is far from the greatest chart of this circa, but I love that 89-92 era and I don't think it can ever be beaten.

funny how people who were in their late teens back then think this way...its obviously a generation thing. but then again music was always better when we were that age regardless of generation... i first heard this back in the 70's when ageing rockers were on about how 'rock and roll was the greatest music ever'... and its a call thats been repeted by successive generations ever since as its their era.

of course it doesnt mean that it was the best ever era, its just a personal viewpoint.

Hey, this was a great chart! 1000 times better than today's...although January 1991 is when I went serious, serious, serious about music!

I'd listen to all these in a second..

Some classic indie stuff from Spacemen 3, Carter, Manics when they were good, Nirvana's first troubling of the charts, bleach blonde Birdland, Jesus Jones / EMF / PWEI, Smiths-sampling Soho, Dinosaur Jr etc.

and some fantastic early breakbeat and techno from 4 Hero, Shut Up and Dance, D-Shake, The Scientist, King Bee, Orbital etc.

Also...does anyone else at all remember 'Summers Magic' by Mark Summers? It was a huge cut up record based mainly around the theme to the Magic Roundabout and with loads of samples from old radio thrown in 'It's that man again!' etc.

I would agree with some posters, this is a weak looking top 40 but then I think the early 90's was a poor time for chart music generally (in England anyway).

I'm also surprised to see Mariah Carey in there, i didn't think she made it quite so early (she must have been young).

Also this chart must be just weeks away from being taken over by Bryan Adams Robin Hood theme tune?? :naughty:

UK Playlist Airplay Chart From Music Week

Week Ending 2 February 1991

i never realised there was any airplay info/chart until later in 1991 (november ish)

I used to love Summers Magic by mark Summers! My faves incl Altogethr now Farm, you got the love, I belive, Time of my life and love rears its ugly head by Living Colour which is an absolute CLASSIC song!

My favourite EMF single a new top ten entry, the KLF at number one.... and Bananrama's second best-ever single, the Youth-produced Preacher Man in the top 30.

Some crud in there - but it's a whole lot better than this week's top 40.

Gotta agree with Living Colour - just a great, great record.

'Someday' was Mariah's second UK hit - I remember with glee that it only went in at 38 (when 'Vision of Love' had hit top 10 in late 1990 I think) and I thought she'd be dropped and we'd seen the last of her. Oh dear.

We were still a good 4-5 months away from the spectre of Bryan Adams. Mind you, I don't know why everyone immediately dismisses 1991 because of Adams - there were hundreds and hundreds of other records in the Top 40 that year and they were considerably better than the trash that's out these days. Conversely, everyone remembers 1994 for Blur and Oasis - but nobody ever says it was $h!te because of Wet Wet Wet.

Conversely, everyone remembers 1994 for Blur and Oasis - but nobody ever says it was $h!te because of Wet Wet Wet.

but thats because blur and oasis were good and more memorable then wetx3, 91 will not, has not, gone down in musical annals as a 'classic' year full of inovative, creative, music.

sure there was some, but what is '91s legacy?... nothing compared to blur/oasis's revamp of the 60's sounds which are still prevailent in todays 'indie' (not my term for it) scene.

Well...arguably both Birdland and the Milltown Brothers revamped the 60s sound as well as Blur and Oasis, but neither are remembered by anyone. Without the likes of Ride, Teenage Fanclub etc who were really big in 1991 (in indie terms anyway) Oasis wouldn't have sounded like they did...but still, yeah. These were the acorns from which the oaks grew.

But as for innovation - 1991 brought forth the start of breakbeat / rave without which we would never, ever have had The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim etc hitting number one later in the decade. You can't write that off ;)

I'll defend 1991 till my death - it's still my favourite year of music bar none.

i could live without fatboy plagarist slim anyday! awful...

point taken though, i guess theres been so many versions of the 1960's re-vamped time and time again that the dance/rave/indie scene in '91 did provide a breeding ground for a different style in music.

lol... you should have been around in the mid 60's, or the punk era 77-82, 91 wouldnt figure in comparison m8. but fair do's, it was your time, you made it your own and of course you love it.

maybe if i was even older  id be extoling the vitues of rock n roll in the 50's!

Erm, I credit Utah Saints, Future Sound Of London & obviously KLF for bringing that sound to the masses. :P

1991 was the year of grunge and shoegazing for me!

Four stone cold classics from 91

Screamadelica - Primal Scream

Nevermind - Nirvana

Loveless - My Bloody Valentine

Bandwagonesque - Teenage Fanclub
