May 5, 200817 yr Bleeding Love achieves US hat trick Friday May 2, 2008 By Alan Jones A timely appearance on American Idol (April 22) was just the tonic Leona Lewis needed to push Bleeding Love to the top of the US Hot 100 singles chart for the third time. With her Syco label boss Simon Cowell looking on, Lewis’ pleasing performance on the show was watched by an audience of more than 30m, and paid massive download dividends for Bleeding Love, which increased sales by 29.5% to 236,000 last week. With airplay also improving, Bleeding Love thus rebounds 2-1 on the Hot 100 to became only the second record in history to top the chart on three occasions. The only record to do it previously was Chic’s Le Freak, which first topped the chart for a week in December 1978 but was immediately dethroned by the Neil Diamond/Barbra Streisand duet You Don’t Bring Me Flowers. A week later Le Freak was top again, and this time in endured for two weeks, the second of which was due to the chart being “frozen”, in the days when US chart compilers didn’t work over Christmas. It was then overhauled by The Bee Gees’ Too Much Heaven, which spent a fortnight in the penthouse before Le Freak returned for a third stint, this time spending three weeks at the top. No wonder Le Freak is one of the top singles of all-time in America with sales upwards of 4m. Bleeding Love is nowhere near that total but its stats are impressive – it has topped 200,000 download sales on four separate weeks, becoming the first song so to do. Its overall sales now are 1,566,000. Also given a boost by American Idol, Lewis’ debut album, Spirit, holds at number two, and records a modest 0.8% increase in sales to 95,000, raising its three week sales tally to 396,000. Ahead of it, Mariah Carey’s E=MC² continues in pole position, but suffers a 60.7% dip in sales to 182,000. Its symptomatic of a market in which overall sales slide to 6.87m – the lowest tally since SoundScan started providing US sales data in 1991. Despite this, there’s a healthy new intake this week, with 20 albums making their maiden appearances. Four debut inside the Top 10: the comedy/music soundtrack Flight Of The Conchords leads the way at number three (52,000 sales), followed by Ashlee Simpson’s Bittersweet World (number four, 47,000 sales), When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shi* Gold by Atmosphere (number five, 36,000) and Phil Vasser’s Prayer Of A Common Man (number 10, 26,500). For 23 year old Simpson, Bittersweet World is the third straight top five album, though its sales are massively down on the 398,000 opening of her 2004 debut Autobiography and its 2005 successor I Am Me (220,000). Atmosphere’s crudely-titled disc (the asterisk is actually a t) provides the Minneapolis hip-hop duo with by far the highest charting album of its five disc career. Its previous best showing came in 2005, when You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Having flatlined at number 66. Country star Phil Vasser’s number 10 debut matches his previous chart best, as achieved by hit 2006 compilation, Greatest Hits Volume 1. Leona Lewis’ album is clear winner among the Brit pack, with Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black a distant second, ranking 30th overall (up from number 39) on sales of 14,000, taking its 59 week cume past 1.9m. Other Brits in the top half of the chart: Robert Plant’s Raising Sand collaboration with bluegrass behemoth Alison Krauss rebounds 54-49, though its sales slip to 10,000; veteran rockers Whitesnake’s first album of the 21st century, Good To Be Bad hisses its way to number 62 on sales of 8,000, becoming their highest charting set since 1989, when Slip Of The Tongue reached number 10; Radiohead’s In Rainbows climbs 81-75 defying an 11.5% slip in sales to 7,700; The Rolling Stones’ live/soundtrack set Shine A Light fades 57-76 on sales of 7,600; Van Morrison is also off 19 places with Keep It Simple receding 64-83 with 7,300 sales; and Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocketful Of Sunshine reverses 86-97 on sales of 6,400. Bedingfield’s single of the same name fades 16-19 on the Hot 100. With Leona Lewis at number one, Duffy’s Mercy debuting at number 87, and Estelle’s American Boy duet with KanYe West up 98-93, all four UK representatives in the Hot 100 are females, the first time that has ever happened.
