i've been a fan of her for years but shockingly, i haven't really checked out her music like i should have done. better late than never. anyway, i do have 'aerial' and 'the whole story' and think they're incredible masterpieces, so i'm just wondering what album anyone here would recommend i purchase & listen to next.

i know there's a few kate fans on here, so i thought i'd check with you guys first and hear what you recommend before i go out and buy.

Well "Hounds Of Love" is an absolute must. One of the best albums ever. "Cloudbusting" is my personal favourite.

"The Sensual World" is also an amazing album. I've listened to some of her others and i liked them but they didnt match the genius of those two.

Only one i disliked was "The Red Shoes" which seemed a little drainy and rather meh.

The only close-to-duff one she's released is Red Shoes - but even that had moments of genius like And So Is Love, Moments of Pleasure and the gorgeous Song of Solomon.

Personal favourites are The Sensual World (hmmmmmh yes) and Hounds of Love... very closely followed by the dark, mesmerising The Dreaming which is her most 'out there' album.

It's worth investing in all of them, really - but probably best to wait as EMI look set to (finally) release the remastered albums this year. Otherwise, the Japanese imports from last year, UK album priced, are beautiful - identical copies of the vinyl albums, gatefold sleeves and inner sleeves, too - gorgeous they are, especially the Never For Ever one.

Hounds of Love is clearly her best. <3 Surprisingly her second best are, imo, The Dreaming and Never For Ever, which aren't really praised. However, I think they're genius. The Dreaming is so experimental and amazing, and my first Kate Bush album. Sat In Your Lap, Get Out Of My House, Night of the Swallow, There Goes a Tenner, Leave It Open, and Pull Out the Pin are absolute musts. As for Never For Ever, Breathing might just be one of my favorite Bush songs. <3 So good. The Wedding List, Babooshka, Army Dreamers, and Violin are also quite good.

I've loved every album she's done, though. <3 The only two which don't really match the others for me are Lionheart and The Red Shoes.

well said - and you listed all my favourite moments from The Dreaming. Whilst it's her least accessible work, by far, I think The Dreaming contains many of her finest moments. For an album that came out in 1982... jeeez.... how far ahead of her time was this woman?

thanks for the replies!

i'll check out 'hounds of love' first then! cheers.

Kate Bush is a good singer (I like some of her songs, esp. Wuthering Heights, Don't Give Up - feat. Peter Gabriel, Cloudbusting and my fave, Running Up That Hill)

She's pretty weird (but not too much)

PS I like Tori Amos a lot more

A lot of well informed comments on this thread. These are her best three studio albums in my view:

Hounds of Love, Sensual World, Red Shoes

Bloody hell, Someone actually rates The Red Shoes!

I have love her stuff ever since I got hold of a copy of The Kick Inside which I still really rate. Songs like Man With The Child in His Eyes, Feel It, Them Heavy people and the title track are brilliant. It's a better album than either Never for Ever or Lionheart.

Meanwhile I think The Dreaming has ousted The Hounds of Love as my fav Kate album. So many ideas in one record. Suspended in Gaffa, Pull Out The Pin and her only true flop single Night of the Swallow.

She is a genius.

It's difficult to pin down which album is my favourite.

For me, her first 5 albums are all worthy of listening to, yes even "Lionheart" which I infact prefer to "The Kick Inside".

Her subsequent albums are good, but for me I don't know what it is, but I think they're not quite in the same league, save perhaps  "Ariel".

I consider "Hounds of Love" her best album

Of course all her albums are great

I consider "Hounds of Love" her best album

but i think all the critics rate that as her best dont they???

dont know her albums as i've only got the whole story and some of her stuff its just a load of near-prog worbling that im not into - tho things like Experiment IV, Running Up te Hill and Hounds Of Love are good (and think they are off Hounds Of Love) - didnt like that King of the Mountain at all - thought it was hideous

the other day i was in the car being driven to the shops and on the radio they were playing the man with the child in his eyes - however this was after the religious slot and i was told the song is about having a w*** so if this is true i think a bit of a mistake by the bbc!!!

'prog warbling'?!?!?! :arrr:

tigerboy needs to get his ass down to HMV to pick up the Bush back catalogue I reckon.... ;)

but i think all the critics rate that as her best dont they???

no.

some of critics likes her debut "The Kick Inside" more (or "The Sensual World")

Kate has a quite big back catalogue and it's quite hard to pick the best one since all of them are great (more or less).

PS I'm not an expert of her music since I started listening to her music 6 months ago...

The fans' choice of best Kate Bush album always seems to be Hounds of Love - but the muso-ish critics always seem to plump for her least accessible work 'The Dreaming'. Both incredible pieces of work - but Hounds edges it for me.

It's probably easier to mention what Kate album to avoid - and there's only one howler, albeit with a clutch of classic tracks even on this one - the one that gets the thumbs-down is Red Shoes for me. Dreadful in parts, genius in others.

My favourite Kate album changes over time.

The Kick Inside was my fav for ages. But then I started to like Hounds over it.

More recently I definitely think The Dreaming has got the edge over both of those. It is one of the most immense albums anybody has ever recorded.

Well I've taken the Kate Bush PLUNGE. I've never been a fan but seen as though many people consider her to be one of the genius' of music I've downloaded 'Hounds of Love' and I'm giving the album it's first listen now. Woo. :o

She IS amazing. End Of.
