Even Jill Paice, who has originated a lead role before (The Woman In White), seems to be completely bowled over by the set and that's without the seating in place or the lighting or sound.

Margaret Martin looked completely gobsmacked.

Still being discussed in the US. I'm off to GWTW site

Gone With the Wind? Northwest Arkansas News isn’t thrilled!

Just found this gem of a reaction to the new production of Gone with the Wind that’s hitting the boards next month:

NWAnews.com :: Northwest Arkansas’ News Source

ATLANTA — Talk about holding a grudge.

One day you toss the tyrannical mother country’s load of tea into Boston Harbor. The next — give or take some 235 years — she retaliates by turning your beloved Gone With the Wind into a musical.

A musical where Melanie sings a ditty called “Desperate Times” after Scarlett kills that nasty Yankee soldier who tried to get into her pantaloons. Fingers crossed there’ll also be tap-dancing !

Gone With the Wind: The Musical, is the brainchild of a novice playwright from Southern California who spent two years creating songs before she even approached author Margaret Mitchell’s estate for rights to the book. It stars American actress Jill Paice (Broadway’s Curtains ) as Scarlett O’Hara and Scotsman Darius Danesh as South Carolina Lowcountry native Rhett Butler.

Mostly though the NWAnews is not thrilled that they won’t get to see the behind the scenes documentary that’s being made of the rehearsals. It will screen here on April 20th on the satellite television channel Turner Classic Movies (Yeah, I never heard of them either…….) and again later in the year with added footage from the opening night.

Hmm, last musical that struck a deal like that was Lord of the Rings with National Geographic last year. I’m only saying

GWTW opens on April 22 at the New London Theatre. We wait with baited breath. Personally I’m not holding out much hope for them recreating the burning of Atlanta. Can’t help being a little concerned about how they’ll handle the total lack of political correctness of the original. Could be fun

Just watched. Much, much, much better. I'm so glad they got these bits of vidio out so quickly.

“Gone With the Wind” to Open in London

March 17th, 2008 by Wade Mann - Leave A Comment

I find it hard to believe that one of the most American of books and movies, “Gone With the Wind,” will be adapted to the stage for the first time as a musical, but not on Broadway but in England, in the New London Theater. I guess when you figure that Vivian Leigh was British, it’s not such a terrible crime.

The new production opens in April of this year. It is directed by Sir Trevor Nunn. It will star Jill Paice as Scarlett O’Hara and Darius Danesh as Rhett Butler. I’ve read rumors that Hugh Jackman is being considered for the role when it finally comes to Broadway. If the play is any good, I think it’s a given.

The new play is being documented on Turner Classic Movies channel which will follow the behind the scene moments of the production right up to the opening.

The new play is said to be more heavily based on the book, emphasizing the story through the slaves eyes. Apparently, the entire production will be much darker, especially in it’s portrayal of Rhett Butler. And I’ve yet to read whether they will be including the famous last line of the movie.

If you want to see the new show when it opens you’ll have to go to England. But when it finally comes out in New York, you’ll want to get your Broadway tickets online.

Interesting.

I think the Hugh Jackman rumour was possibly started by a poster on whatsonstage etc.at the time of the first mention there was to be a musical of GWTW and as usual it soon became accepted as fact because it was repeated on all kinds of sites.

In fact, no-one had a clue because Sir Trevor Nunn had slapped a privacy contract on the serious auditionees, like Darius.

It seemed to be a rumour going rioght nback when it first came out that a GWTW musical was being done, I really dont think Hugh would be a good Rhett - it sounds good when you are fantasising, I recall thinki nghe was dishy as wolverine - but I was reading some more forums where they wanted him to be Rhett and they had linked to some videos of him singing on stage in musicals - he cannot sing that well to be honest, he had a terrible lisp in one song and he isnt that great on stage, small and weasely - but each to his own, I suppose it depends on how well Darius does - if they want a "name" on Broadway ok, but if he doesnt hack it as Rhett its a shame as GWTW deserves the best in the role regardless! I would dearly love Darius to do Braodway - and to prove he is in fact the perfect Rhett
I would love that too. And with it being 18 months to 2 yrs away - he'd have plenty of time to get the album out first.

On theatre sites they plumped for Jackman or Barrowman, because they thought Rhett would have to be played by either a famous West End star or a Hollywood star who had done musicals and they couldn't think of anyone else who was of the right age.

Jackman was in the West End Oklahoma and in the Broadway show and he also did The Boy from Oz on Broadway. They were his springboard to Hollywood.

On GWTW sites when they talked about a Hollywood name for Rhett, the consensus was that Johnny Depp should do it.

Johnny Depp? Mad! These people are so used to camera trickery where anything is possible. He's far too small to be Rhett.

Have just watched the new videos. What a vast difference a professional camera crew can make!

Fantastic. My fears have been put to rest!

In the 3rd making it video, the one with Jill and Darius arriving at the theatre you can see Jill is aware of the camera when she comes through the gate.

Wow, John Wilkes, makes Darius look smaller!

What was on the label on D's dressing room door - was it his own name? I couldn't make it out.

He liked his dressing room, didn't he. I'd be pleased if they got the theatre finished but, I could live with it in peices as long as I could see the show.

I wonder what his previous dressing rooms were like........the theatres were much older so I would hazard a guess

that this one is luxury compared to the others. Were there any photos of the Adelphi or Cambridge dressing rooms?

I'm sure Darius did some of his messages from one of them and there were pictures taken in his dressing room on the first night at the Adelphi. The latter may stillbe on rex features, wireimage etc.

It looked pretty much the same, white walls with lights round the mirror, probably smaller though..

His room was fine but had probably not been decorated for a while,. Thneis one looks all done up. I don't think it'd bother Darius anyway.
