Chloe set for West End debut

Just five years ago she had never appeared on a professional stage and was interested only in getting her GCSEs.

But next month 20-year-old Chloe Bishop from Staffordshire makes her West End debut in Trevor Nunn’s much-heralded production of Gone With The Wind – and thoughts of an academic career have gone by the board.

The show stars Scotsman Darius Danesh, who rose to fame in the TV talent show Pop Idol, as Rhett Butler. West End actress Jill Paice is to play Scarlett O’Hara.

The size of Chloe’s role in the ensemble has still to be determined but she is over the moon just to be part of such a prestigious production. But it means she has had to abandon her degree course at the Birmingham School of Acting after being told by the show’s producers to report for rehearsals the following Monday.

And it all started after she was cast as Eliza Doolittle in Wolverhampton-based South Staffs Musical Theatre Company’s production of My Fair Lady at the Grand Theatre in 2003.

She said: “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always loved the theatre, especially musical theatre, but I’d never been on a stage until I was 15. It’s not like I grew up going to dance or drama classes. It’s all happened so quickly, I can hardly believe it.”

Chloe sent off her CV to the show’s producers just before Christmas and was contacted the next day. After auditions she was told: “Quit your course, you’ve got the part.”

Originally from Perton, she has now moved to London but returns at weekends to help run a children’s theatre group in Halesowen with husband Ben Handley.

Theatre Company chairwoman Alison Norton, of Tettenhall, said: “When Chloe auditioned for the role of Eliza Doolittle, she completely captivated the audition panel. We’re very proud to have been involved in her early career.”

l Gone With The Wind officially opens at the New London Theatre on April 22.

She's listed as one of the swings.

There is huge talent in the amateur ranks of local societies etc as I have noticed but not all want to take it to the top.
The much heralded comment in that report worries me because it just has to deliver else...
It's such a famous and emotional story, I don't think it could fail. It has the best people in the business orchesrtating it's success :) I don't think we need to worry about it failing :)

Swings provide cover for the rest of the casst. If anyone is ill, they take their part.

Darius looks gigantic in the pic leading Jill on to the floor and she's so slim, it makes him look broad.
