Posted May 22, 200619 yr CULTURE BOX ADULT CONTEMPORARY / SINGER-SONGWRITER This forum needs livening up a bit, there is very little posting going on in here atm :( so anyone got any other ideas for it? Just post em here ;)
May 23, 200619 yr Frankly I'm not surprised that it doesn't have the same turnover as many other forums. It's a niche forum because you insist that singer/songwriter is a genre and exclude hundreds of singer/songwriters. As a niche forum the aim can't be quantity and post counting. Just my opinion. No skin off my nose - my singer/songwriter already has his own forum.
May 23, 200619 yr Author Frankly I'm not surprised that it doesn't have the same turnover as many other forums. It's a niche forum because you insist that singer/songwriter is a genre and exclude hundreds of singer/songwriters. As a niche forum the aim can't be quantity and post counting. Just my opinion. No skin off my nose - my singer/songwriter already has his own forum. The only artist we have officially "excluded" from the S/S forum so far has been Lady Sovereign. Other artists who write their own music such as McFly or Darius would look totally out of place in here they should be in pop, or indeed your Darius forum.
May 23, 200619 yr Singer/Songwriter does have it's own genre of music as VH2 "Americana" proves - it is largely for up & coming new artists who do not fit neatly into the Pop; Rock or Indie genres. The leading examples of this include The Flaming Lips; REM; Nick Cave; Bjork; Kate Bush; Supergrass & Crowded House (Neil Finn). Whilst watching VH2 Americana - it has been the first music show to promote Nerina Pallot; The Feeling & Sandi Thom three acts who fit nicely into this genre of music. The problem with this genre is if an act from it becomes too popular (look at the three examples above) then it will be associated with its nearest Pop; Rock or Indie genre so ceases to belong to the Americana (or Spotlight tag) that it once had. Likewise when this act has become less popular (eg. Supergrass or Neil Finn) so it ceases to belong to its Rock; Indie or Pop genre then it can become reassociated with the "Americana" or "Spotlight" tag. So it basically works as a feeder genre for the main Pop, Rock & Indie genres.
May 24, 200619 yr I think the reason why this forum has slower traffic is purely because the people who were attracted here to begin with are people who listen to very mainstream pop and chart focused and I don't really see any true singer/songwriters in the charts much these days. When I look at everyone else's charts I don't know any of the acts because I come from a completely alternative line of music. I think this forum will evolve slowly as people discover eachothers quirky artists more:) Si
