Look at the chart at the top of the thread - That is a list of alternative/indie songs. I think it is a massive mistake opening this up to specialist songs. I mean look at that list of genres - it says anything basically as long as it's written by the artist. Which rules out Ronson which is one point in it's favour!

 

And The Hoosiers are just an insult to music in general. And to consider them Indie is just rediculous.

 

I think alternative is probably an arbitrary and dated idea but it seems to mean guitar pop of the sort that doesn't reach the top end of the chart too much. It is an alternative to mainstream rock and pop.
