February 25, 200817 yr Author With the main four catagories of Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress - I feel it was mostly spot on, apart from perhaps the actress. It was a foregone conclusion Daniel Day-Lewis was going to win Best Actor. I saw 'There Will Be Blood' Last night and his performance was nothing short of astounding. The man is such an amazing actor. He puts so much power into his performances, and was head and shoulders above the others imo, which is obviously why he has been the favourite by such a massive margin. 'No Country For Old Men.' definatly deserved 'Best Film. Although, I thought 'There Wil Be Blood' was a very good film, I felt it was quite dull compared to 'No Country'. The Coen brother definatly deserved Best Directors, and I am very pleased for them :cheer:
February 25, 200817 yr I'm so happy that Marion Cotillard won :D I like her very much - she's extremely talented and her performance was great! I enjoyed "La Vie en Rose" a lot - it is one of the best movies I have seen recently.
February 25, 200817 yr I wanted Juno to win best movie. :( But to be fair I haven't seen No Country For Old Men or There Will Be Blood. Also a bit upset Ellen Page did not win for Best Actress, but Marion Cotillard was my second choice, so that's fantabulous I suppose. Diablo Cody winning for Best Screenplay = <3. And well deserved.
February 26, 200817 yr While I also thought Johnny Depp was deserved of winning the little man for his performance in Sweeney Todd, Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood was amazing and truly an oscar winning performance.

Before I say "There Will Be Blood" I was with Tommy Lee Jones all the way (for not just one, but TWO excellent performances for "...Elah" and "No Country..."), but Day Lewis' performance just absolutely blew me away.... Talk about a performance that could take your breath away...! He sucked out the air from the entire cinema.... Absolutely NO ONE uttered or whispered as much as a word for the entire duration of "There Will Be Blood"...... Bloody good film too, but not as good as the Coens' brilliant opus.... "No Country..." deserved everything it got.... Film of the year without a doubt....
February 26, 200817 yr i'm definately going to catch There Will Be Blood in the cinema before it goes, i really want to see someone who is genuinely talented act, i know i won't be disappointed by mr. day lewis, one our best actors!! i'd love to see daniel, marion, tilda and javier all in a film they are all so charismatic!!
February 26, 200817 yr While I also thought Johnny Depp was deserved of winning the little man for his performance in Sweeney Todd Another fantastic performance also... I admit to being genuinely impressed with Depp's vocal talents as well, he really has a quite, rich, deep singing voice... Helena Bonham Carter by contrast seemed a bit reedy and overwhelmed when they did the duets.... Depp's time must surely come, he is by far one of the most versatile character actors of his (or really any..) generation who can turn his hand to any role he sets his mind to, he was just unlucky to be up against a performance (from Day Lewis) which was nothing short of utterly staggering and so meticulously perfect in every way....
February 26, 200817 yr With the main four catagories of Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress - I feel it was mostly spot on, apart from perhaps the actress. I agree, Julie Christie was, for my mind anyway, head and shoulders above Cotillard.... And although I wasn't a big fan of "Juno", the actual performance from Ellen Page was also, I feel, superior....
February 27, 200817 yr I agree, Julie Christie was, for my mind anyway, head and shoulders above Cotillard.... And although I wasn't a big fan of "Juno", the actual performance from Ellen Page was also, I feel, superior.... Julie Christie is a phenomenal actress - and her turn in Away From Her is a masterpiece - beautifully underplayed and understated - it's a grim movie (but a great one) - and I challenge anyone who sees it to say her performance isn't Oscar-worthy. I'm not shocked Day-Lewis won the Oscar - but personally I find everything he does so incredibly hammy - he overplays his hand at every turn. I truly don't think he deserved the Oscar this year - and certainly he didn't deserve the other one he won - what a terrible movie that was. I'm not shocked Juno didn't win - I'm more shocked it was even nominated - it was mere fluff compared to the rest of the nominees. Other than actress and actor awards, I think the Academy got it right for once this year. No Country, duff ending excepted, is a corker... it took me 2 viewings to realise it, though.
February 28, 200817 yr I'm not shocked Juno didn't win - I'm more shocked it was even nominated - it was mere fluff compared to the rest of the nominees. Totally mate.. I'm shocked that "Assassination of Jesse James" got practically nothing in terms of nominations, which I found utterly disgraceful... A magnificent film, truly elegant, inspiring and thought-provoking, right up there with the greatest of American cinema (although, paradoxically, the director is from New Zealand... ). The photography, the direction, the acting from all concerned was pretty flawless... If not for Javier Bardem's frightening turn in "No Country...", surely Casey Affleck would've got that Supporting Actor Oscar for sure for his pretty damned staggering portrayal of Bob Ford... "Assassination..." should deffo have got all of "Juno"'s nominations.. As you say, "Juno" is just fluff, it's really not that much better than your average Teen Comedy, and nowhere near as good as "Little Miss Sunshine"....
February 28, 200817 yr I'm not shocked Day-Lewis won the Oscar - but personally I find everything he does so incredibly hammy - he overplays his hand at every turn. I truly don't think he deserved the Oscar this year - and certainly he didn't deserve the other one he won - what a terrible movie that was. I dont agree that Day Lewis is "hammy" as such, he's just a very visible actor who pretty much defines every single film he's in by his presence... You'd may as well call Welles, Olivier or Brando "hammy" if you accuse Day Lewis.. I pretty much put Day Lewis in that category - he really is up there with those three greats in terms of his screen presence and his obsessive, compulsive approach to his art... Nobody else in "There Will Be Blood" even comes close to matching his performance (I think if anyone is pretty ludicrous in that film, it's the young actor who plays Eli who tries way too hard to make an impression in the face of Day Lewis' domination of the film...), but because the film is all about his character (Daniel Plainview), in the same way that "Citizen Kane" was all about Charles Foster Kane, I feel his complete domination of the film was entirely appropriate.... The film itself is an 8, but his performance is a 10 all the way in my opinion...
March 3, 200817 yr I agree, Julie Christie was, for my mind anyway, head and shoulders above Cotillard.... And although I wasn't a big fan of "Juno", the actual performance from Ellen Page was also, I feel, superior.... I liked Juno - even tho if that came on film4 and american pie 2 came on itv2 at midnight i would watch jim, stiffler and co for like the 9th zillionth time (juno could be said to be too knowingly twee maybe???) but even tho i cannot say if Ellen Page's perf was superior to Cotillard (as ive only seen Taxi 3 and my mum hasnt opened her piaf dvd yet) - page's perf was so natural - even tho she did seem a little bit older but the kind of twee 20 year old canuck you could see yourself going out with
