Bon Jovi Tour Begins In Shadow Of Shootings
February 19, 2008, 12:00 AM ET
Gary Graff, Detroit, Billboard.com

Bon Jovi's U.S. tour was kicked off last night (Feb. 18th in Omaha, Neb., without any full production rehearsals, due to last Thursday's shootings on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Bon Jovi and the rest of the band were en route to DeKalb on Thursday, where they were due to rehearse at NIU's Convocation Center because Omaha's Qwest Center was unavailable. The Convocation Center was near Cole Hall, where Steve Kazmierczak fatally shot five people and wounded more than a dozen others before taking his own life.

"Your thoughts and prayers go out to them. It's a shocker, just devastating," Jon Bon Jovi tells Billboard.com. "We were in the air at the time, so we didn't get any further than the airport. When we landed we were just told to get back on the plane and go home. But our crew and the stage and everything was there. Once things settled down they just packed everything up and headed to Nebraska. What else can you do?"

Bon Jovi will be on the road in the U.S. until the beginning of May and begins a European tour on May 22 in Gelsinkirchen, Germany. The group plans be out through July but isn't sure where the tour will finish. "I've got two choices," Bon Jovi says. "We've got the Giants, Soldiers, Fenways (stadiums) on hold or we stay in Europe because of the state of the economy. All these (arena) shows are sold out, but the July dates, I'm not sure where the economy's going to be, so I don't know yet."

As previously reported, the group is being accompanied on tour by Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple and a film crew for a documentary about Bon Jovi's first 25 years. Bon Jovi reveals that the project is an outgrowth from a biography that group was working on with author David Ritz. "We were limiting ourselves in what we'd say," Bon Jovi notes, "so when you're having reservations you're not telling the truth. And if you're not telling the truth, what's the point? So we gave 'em their money back and called it a day."

The marching orders for the documentary, he says, are "it's either gonna tell the truth or it's not coming out. There's been a lot of accomplishments in 25 years. There's a story there. There's a reason why. I'm not sure what (the film) is going to be like; I think that's probably the beauty of it, and it's also the fear that's driving it."

Review: When Bon Jovi rocks out, class is in session
BY JAN DEKNOCK
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

When it comes to giving the perfect rock concert, the guys in Bon Jovi could teach a master's seminar.

Inventive, ever-morphing video effects that go miles beyond the standard big screens?

Check.

Fan-friendly touches, including using a text-message contest to bring fans to stage-side seats, keeping the crowd surprised all night?

Check.

Superb musicianship from every player and an array of fist-pumping classic hits?

Check.

And, oh yeah, how about a lead singer with the nonstop energy, cool vibe and nice-guy appeal of Jon Bon Jovi?

Check. Check. Check.

On Monday night, the sold-out crowd of 17,000 that filled Qwest Center Omaha got it all in a generous, 2½-hour show that covered 25 years of great music from the New Jersey band.

The opening burst of songs ranged from the group's first big hit, 1982's "Runaway," to the hard-rockin' classic "You Give Love a Bad Name" to the country-tinged "Lost Highway," the title song from the band's latest album.

Jon Bon Jovi didn't waste much time on talk, but he did stop once to offer a quick greeting to the crowd, which appeared to span at least three generations of rock fans.

"The guys are here because there's no more football," he yelled. "And the girls are here because . . . ."

He paused, did a little vamping, and let the crowd fill it in for themselves.

Yeah, we get it. The rocker knows that, at 45, he still is a fine sight in his skin-tight black jeans, red T-shirt and black leather jacket. Equally impressive was the look of joy that filled his face for most of the night. No fake rock sneer is ever needed for this guy.

The real stars, of course, were the songs, played with perfect attack all night by the central band of guitarist Richie Sambora, drummer Tico Torres and keyboardist David Bryan.

Opening the show with a tight, 45-minute set was the rock band Daughtry, led by 2006 "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry.

Only about half of the crowd had settled into their seats by the time the group took the stage, about 10 minutes past the show time of 7:30 p.m.

But Daughtry and his mates quickly grabbed command with an aggressive array of guitar-driven songs, including the Top 20 hits "It's Not Over" and "Over You." By the time they closed with "Home," a monster ballad that dominated rock and pop radio for months, they had done enough to win a nice ovation.

Even in so short a set, it was evident that this hard-working band could use a fun melody or two to add variety to the rock angst. Perhaps that's a lesson they'll learn on this tour from Bon Jovi.

SATURDAY
WANTED
I LOVE THIS TOWN

Review from Bjcrazycpa at drycounty.com:

Okay, I'm home. I thought Saturday's show was excellent, even if on paper the set list is essentially the same as the previous 3 shows. The stage with the hydralic lift is cool. Jon is able to go all around the stage and he does just that. The video screens with the venetian effect are also very cool. And it was soooo good to see Richie running from one side of the stage to the other during KTF as I haven't seen him do that since the TD tour.

Sunday's show for me kicked ass. I got to the arena at 6 p.m. and when I walked in I could hear the band still doing soundcheck. I got as close as I could and I heard Jon singing It's Hard Letting You Go. I was a bit shocked on that one. He didn't sing it but it's nice to know it may be used down the road somewhere. Misunderstood is a favorite from Bounce and I'm one that loves Captain Crash. When Jon was talking to the anniversary couple (before Misunderstood) it was hysterical. He invited the wife, Sabrina, to hold the lyrics and he asked her husband's name, and Jon said, "your husband's name is Hans, no sh*t" and then spoke to the husband and said how married men have been thanking him, Jon, for the last 25 years, lol!

Also, I loved the story Jon told during the break down of Saturday night. He mentioned how David, he and Richie were all born in the same hospital in Perth Amboy. He said the doctor slapped him on the ass and that's the last time he took any sh*t from anyone. Jon talked about having a dream and how the band would practice in this bar that Tico's mama owned. He said that one night someone broke in through the skylight and stole all of their equipment but yet that didn't deter them.

All in all I had a great time in Chicago, great food, drank lots of expensive wine and witnessed two excellent shows. Bring on Philly!!

Well thats all for now

Feel free to add any pictures, videos, reviews etc

Some people have been complaining about the setlist, what do u lot think about it?

  • Author

I just checked world clock and its 3pm in chicago now, so I'm guessing the next gig will be on when I'm fast asleep and dreaming

Aparently they might perform Lost Highway from start to finish tonight

I think the setlist is abfab !! It's the right mixture between the old songs and the new ones.

There's ballads in it and uptempo songs and the great anthems we all wanna hear every time we see Bon Jovi

Review from Scarzy on drycounty.com:
Daughtry sounded much better (less muffled) and had improved crowd interaction throughout the show in my opinion. I was very nervous for Bon Jovi because I was going to be crushed if it was the same old set list again. My nerves got worse after hearing Lost Highway, Bad Name, and Raise Your Hands to start the list. But then Jon said hello and mentioned this show was for the die hards and we would hear some songs they don't play often. They kicked into Everyday and I was still very nervous since I have heard this many times. Once I'd Die For You (personal favorite) kicked off, I was feeling somewhat better. It was fabulous even if some of the fans were clueless and sat down (unforgiveable). Just Older was good and was different than the other shows so all was good and I was no longer sure what to expect next (this made the show priceless). Once I Love This Town started I was in shock because I totally believed that would close the encore like always. Now nobody knew what to expect and excitement was building for all the die hards in the crowd. When Jon announced Wild Is The Wind next, the breath just left me and I had goosebumps everywhere. It was so incredibly awesome to hear that song live again . I really cannot put the feeling into words. At this point, anything was game. When Knockin' started, I knew Blaze was coming and I heard that Saturday so I was starting to think we were venturing back to normality. Then Daughtry hit the stage and listening to Chris and Jon belt it out was fabulous. They put so much energy and heart into the song that it made me want even more of a song I really do not like so much. I, like many, am not fond of others singing Bon Jovi songs but this was for real and pretty darn incredible. After a couple more expected and cannot be left out hits, it was Richie's time to shine. I love These Days so I was begging to hear it and extend my amazement over the setlist. Sure enough, here it comes and it was just as amazing as the rest. Next, Jon appears on the platform and I am expecting Memory but wait a minute those drums aren't Memory. Could it be??? Yes, why not make this the best show I have ever seen and play Livin' In Sin. It was freakin' killer and I was completely shocked over what I was seeing. Again, I expected Memory next and then Richie shows up on the platform with Jon to see IBTFY together. Freakin' cool and unexpected. It sounded great. Yeah, I had to survive Bed of Roses, the dance, and the board walk, but that was okay at this point. I love the HAND, Faith, Prayer threesome. How can somebody not rock to those?

I really was not sure what to expect from the encore at this point since Town was already played. I wanted Any Other Day since it had not played in Chicago but did not get my wish (oh well can't complain really). The encore was good. I am not a big fan of the covers but they went over very well with the crowd and it was obvious Jon was really into making this a great show for everyone. I failed to mention earlier how he was having a great time with a camera that runs the HD screens behind the stage during Baby. He was dancing and spinning around with the camera having an awesome time. It has been a long time since I have seen Jon seem so "free for all" on stage. It's hard to describe how amazed I truly was.

I am sure I missed some great things that happened, but it honestly was a once in a lifetime show for me compared to the other 40+ I have seen. I think it was even more special due to my sadness over the Saturday setlist and the spur of the moment decision to get tickets very late for Tuesday's show. I had a feeling after seeing Sunday's setlist that there was a chance for a special night and the boys surely delivered. Once again, I am totally proud to be a Bon Jovi fan and I hope every one of you get a chance to see something similar from the band.

Of course, I still think Raise Your Hands makes no sense at the expense of Runaway and I would have loved to hear Any Other Day in the encore. I am quitting while ahead, the show rocked as is and I am not going to complain one bit.

Bon Jovi Delivers A Taut Night Of Hits

By Melissa Ruggieri: Times-Dispatch Staff Writer

WASHINGTON Those who came of age in the'70s have Bruce Springsteen to worship. But the kids from the'80s? Their loyalty to Bon Jovi is steadfast.

Proof of that allegiance came Thursday night at the Verizon Center from a sellout crowd whose members are still probably hoarse from scream-shouting along to 2½ hours of hits.

Any current Bon Jovi audience happily disregards the band's shortcomings -- the over-reliance on stomp'n' clap backbeats ("We Got It Goin' On," "Have a Nice Day"), the parade of clichés in many songs -- to enjoy the band for what it is: a slickly professional, impressively tight rock group.

It's almost impossible to believe that Jon Bon Jovi, the charismatic frontman, turns 46 tomorrow, as his unflagging energy during the musical marathon was an exhausting exhibition in stamina. He'd certainly be the most popular aerobics instructor at any gym.

Though this three-month U.S. tour, which launched 12 days ago in Nebraska, is ostensibly in support of the experimental country album "Lost Highway," the band played only a handful of new cuts at Thursday's show.

Instead, the core four of Jon Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora, drummer Tico Torres and keyboardist David Bryan -- plus longtime bassist Hugh McDonald and secondary guitarist Bobby Bandiera -- concentrated on rewarding fans with a convoy of smashes and choice album tracks from their 25-year career.

The adrenaline shot "Raise Your Hands" and giddy swing of "Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars" were complemented by Bon Jovi staples "You Give Love a Bad Name" and the band's first hit, the keyboard-jabbing "Runaway."

Though his voice sounded clear and robust on most songs, Jon Bon Jovi doesn't even bother trying to hit those impossible screeches anymore, turning instead to agreeable co-pilot Sambora or allowing the audience to relive those bathroom-mirror moments.

So much is often made of the band's superficial appeal that rarely does it receive due recognition for its talents. Bon Jovi's musicianship is so taut that when the touch of Bo Diddley drumming that anchored "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" segued into a blistering patch of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" before circling back home in a boogie-swamp jam, it suggested these guys could read one another blindfolded.

The other star of the show -- aside from Sambora's cool talkbox that shadowed a deliciously defiant "It's My Life" and the still gloriously anthemic "Livin' on a Prayer" -- was the band's stage.

Four Venetian-blind screens floated throughout the show on a truss, contracting and expanding while projecting live video from the stage and scenes of cityscapes and highways.

Opening the show was Daughtry, the current hits machine fronted by former Fluvanna County resident Chris Daughtry.

Daughtry and his four-piece band attacked his songbook with what looked like passion but sounded uninspired.

Ubiquitous radio favorites "It's Not Over" and "Feels Like Tonight" are catchy pop/rock tunes that were delivered ably, but perhaps it's the limited range of Daughtry's voice that infused other songs such as "You Don't Belong" and "What I Want" with nothing but dullness.

Chris Daughtry clearly admires the Bon Jovi model -- right down to naming his band after himself -- so it's hoped he's watching from the sidelines each night to pick up some pointers.
