It will be a strange experience reading the book, seeing the stage musical and then the film and finally the making of the stage musical.

The stage musical will be my last step................. film - Rhett Butler's People - Gone With The Wind - the Making of the Musical and finally after all that, the show itself.

I watched the film, did cry a bit, we did comment that Gable was a bit too old to play Rhett, he must have been 50? then back then the men did seem old for the roles, while these days they all look 12!!

I could see some differences between the film and book though, some children and Klu Klux Klan missing, I suppose 1939 films had to be politically correct too.

I actually really enjoyed it, one of those romances when each of them is at crosspurposes and hiding what they are feeling, I did warm to Scarlett more in the film the in the book, I have actually really enjoyed reading the book then watching the film.now I will be seeing the stage production

I enjoyed the stage production. Darius is playing someone natasha's aga in the show - and that's what he looks like. At the end, he's 45 and grey and it looks right them as well. I don't like Clark Gable, he makes my skin crawl so I'm not a fair judge of the film.
yes, I agree I did keep replacing him with Darius, and that way I did find it more moving - its a shame Belle has been left out too, I found that backstory told an extra bit about Rhett, the way she had tears in her eys when Rhett spoke about Bonnie...and it tieing in with her mention of a son to melanie(a whole new story there)...the film was good at imcorporating the back stories and character of people in to the film with the odd bit of dialogue, having read the book I noticed that
I may, one day, buy the dvd. Then I can pause it and fast forward it. I often have a problem when I've read the book first.

It should have been with all the re-writes of the script which went on.

Selznick must have been so single-minded to continue with GWTW through the amazing hassles he had before they could start filming and even then they sacked the first director. Some of the footage which had been shot by George Cukor is in the film.

I'll try and bear that in mine if I ever do sit through it. I don't feel like that about the musical. They could have kept going on for another hour and I'd have been happy but stranded.
in a way its a shame they cannot match the films sets, that made the film as well, the absolute paradise to the hell and back again...Tara and 12 oaks were breathtaking in the film

They weren't as breathtaking as you think. According to the original Making of..........in order to trim costs, they were open topped sets and all the ceilings were painted in later.

Edited by Baytree

lol, I havent read that - I did think the backgrounds looked painted backdrops on occasion, but the scenes did portray a real lavish lifestyle and beautiful houses

The DVD version I have has loads of bonus material. It's absolutely fascinating what went on behind the scenes of the movie

I wonder how much at today's prices it cost, if inflation was taken into account.
