NEW YORK, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. singer/songwriter Donna Summer is working on her first studio album of all new material in 17 years, Sony BMG announced Tuesday.

"Crayons" is set for release May 20 on Sony BMG Music Entertainment's Burgundy Records.

The label said the new CD will "have all the characteristics that made Donna an icon" and feature a mix of new up-tempo tunes and ballads Summer penned as well as performed.

Summer said the title refers to the aesthetic of the album which has "a menagerie of colors and styles, with hints of different ethnic traditions and sounds.

"My dream is that when people hear the music it will remind them of their youth, their childhood and the joy and wonderment they felt exploring their first pack of Crayons," she said in a statement.

Summer has had 14 No. 1 Billboard singles and won five Grammy Awards.

Her song "Last Dance" won both Oscar and Golden Globe awards.

The singer will release Crayons, her first studio album in 17 years, on May 20.

"My dream is that when people hear the music it will remind them of their youth, their childhood and the joy and wonderment they felt exploring their first pack of crayons," Summer told Billboard.

The album will feature collaborations with Greg Kurstin, who co-wrote Kylie Minogue's current single 'Wow', and Lester Mendez, who has worked with Shakira and Jewel.

Summer released Mistaken Identity, her most recent studio album, in 1991. She scored nine top ten UK singles between 1976 and 1989, including the number one 'I Feel Love'.
