Posted May 23, 200619 yr Okay, bear with this one, it's a pretty complex musical path and The Gathering have probably done as many differing styles as it is possible for a metal/rock band to do... First video is from 1991, when TG were an all-male set-up - their sound here is very hard-core metal in the vein of My Dying Bride or Slayer. This is "Anthology in Black" (rather stereotypical metal song-title..) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HBS1ZTIpn0.swf They got rid of the shouty bloke and replaced him with their first female vocalist, and released the "Always" album in '93 I do believe. Unfortunately, I havent been able to find any footage of the band with her as vocalist, so moving on.... ...And here we have the first album ("Mandylion") with their current vocalist Anneke Van Giersbergen - now, this is where the story of The Gathering, umm, gathers momentum somewhat. This is another live video, but the contrast between the styles could not be more telling. Going from the hard-core, almost Death, Metal, to this more Progressive, slightly gothic, contemporary metal. "Eleanor" is a track from "Mandylion", and the change in the band is almost miraculous - Anneke's soaring, breathtaking vocals define the next phases of The Gathering's progression...
