NETWORK Rail was fined £14m today for failing to complete engineering works on time at Christmas.

The rail company - which is owned by the Government - was hit by the huge penalty for serious overruns during the New Year.

Politicians and unions, who blasted the fines as 'pointless', also claimed that the railways in Britain will NEVER work properly while private companies operate the trains - and the Government continues to operate the track.

So what do YOU think?

Does the rail infrastructure in Britian make any sense at all? Do these public-private partnerships, once hailed by Tony Blair as the future, actually work?

Or is it time to forget about how we penalise different aspects of the public/private rail system for such huge inefficiency - and just re-nationalise the whole lot?

If Network Rail say they are short of funding to maintain the railways, is fining them £14m not making the situation worse?

Definitely. The trains up here are a disgrace and ticket prices spiral each year despite the fact the service is getting worse and worse.

Of course they should. Prices are out of control and are way way above inflation, and most of the time the excuse for the rises are "Oh we have to repaint the trains"

But it's not going to happen under any of the current parties unless they are forced to, or the Socialist Party do some sort of military coup d'etat...

If Network Rail say they are short of funding to maintain the railways, is fining them £14m not making the situation worse?

Fining Network Rail doesn't mean a damn, they'll just pass on the costs of paying out the fine to the commuters YET AGAIN....... <_< <_< No, the ONLY way to solve this problem is to make Public Transport PUBLIC again... Nationalise the railways, scrap Public/Private Partnerships, re-regulate the buses... The public Transport network in this country is an absolute fukkin' disgrace.... And the direct cause of that discrace is Privatisation...
