The start of the 80’s produced some of the best songs of the decade, and out in front were most of these artists. I loved just about everything in 1980-1982. But these ones were my stand out tracks from the time.

1. Adam & Ants - Stand and Deliver. The flamboyant dandy highwayman. A great pop song.

2. Human League - Sound of the crowd. A great song from the album “Dare” by one of my fave bands.

3. Teardrop Explodes - Reward. Julian Cope with great trumpet sound (played by Hurricane Smith)

4. Spandau Ballet - To cut a long story short. One of the first new Romantic tracks, and one of their best.

5. Duran Duran - Planet Earth. Another of the new Romantic bands of the early 80’s, who would go on to dominate the charts for a good few years.

6. Visage - Fade to grey. Steve Strange (well named, :D ) A classic song from the period.

7. Ultravox - Vienna. Stand out video of the time, all be a bit dated nowadays.

8. Japan - Visions of China. Early leaders of the new Romantic scene, often overlooked as Bowie clones.

an excellant selection m8... but id have called this one 'my album of 1981'...lol.. id chose most of those tracks tbh... but i prefer 'kings of the wild fronteer' to 'stand and deliver', marginally, sad was as you rightly say 'a classic pop song'... 'da diddley qua qua' wtf?

ill do mine later :)

well mine aint much different from brians!

human league - 'sound of the crowd' my fav on '81, my fav of the new romantic scene and my fav of the human league, to me this is the anthem of 'new romantics'.

adam and the ants - 'kings of the wild fronteer' adam at his best imho, although stand and deliver was the perfect pop song, this track was my fav

visage - 'fade to grey'... one of the best tracks ever from mr button mushroom ;) , russ will understand! lol, seminal video and another major new romantic anthem. love it

ultravox - 'vienna'. ott, pretencious, dark, nonsensical, but so what!!! a classic!

tenpole tudor - swords of a thousand men' great bit of 'fun' pop,

landscape - 'einstein a go-go' a great one hit wonder (more or less).

department s - 'is vic there' wouldnt sound out of place in todays indie scene, only this sound was original! great riff

passions - 'im in love with a german film star' another dark oddity.. good stuff

human league - 'being boiled' a second appearance from phil n co, and another excellant track

spandau ballet - 'to cut a long story short' great first track when they were fresh, another great riff too..

teardrop explodes - 'when i dream' check this track out guys...its fantastic and better then 'reward'..

eurythmics - 'never gonna cry again' their first and be far their best, another one worth checking out..

OK, here goes a generous 16 track album (imagine the old vinyl compilition albums released on K-Tel with a compressed sound to fit more minutes on to a side of vinyl:

But rather than pick the obvious known tracks by the obvious artists I try and be a little more obscurer.....

I could easily make this a double album, so many great acts missed, etc.....

Before the New Romantic scene exploded on the charts towards the end of 1980 with the arrival of Fade To Grey and To Cut A Long Story Short there were the clubs like Blitz and Club For Heroes where the scene started. Naturally there were no New Romantic artists on record at the time, so here's my album of pre-new romantic tunes you would have heard at a New Romantic club!

01 - David Bowie - Sound And Vision The godfather of the scene, really. The Berlin period in particular yielded up several popular tracks (Heroes, Golden Years, Boys Keep Swinging, The Secret Life Of Arabia, etc).

02 - Kraftwerk - The Model The other main influence on the New Romantics; the godlike genius that is Kraftwerk!

03 - Japan - Quiet Life Japan were slightly ahead of the curve and were making pop dance records before the New Romantics got into a recording studio.

04 - Giorgio Moroder - The Chase From Midnight Express - a classic early electro dance track along with From Here To Eternity and I Feel Love.

05 - Gina X Performance - No GDM Absolute classic louche, camp masterpiece from Germany.

06 - Ultravox - Quiet men The pre Midge Ure Ultravox were lead by John Foxx. This was there great dance track.

07 - Yello - Bostich An absolute classic floor filler from Switzerland's greatest musical export.

08 - Lori and the Chameleons - Touch Great electropop single. I don't know who Lori was, but the Chameleons were Bill Drummond (manager of Echo and the Bunnymen who later formed JAMMS/The KLF) and Dave Balfe (keyboard player in the Teardrop Explodes who later set up Food Records).

09 - Iggy Pop - The Passenger Another floor filler from the former Stooge. Produced by David Bowie.

10 - Telex - Moskow Diskow Another classic electro floor filler, along with Twist A St Tropez. Belgium's finest musical export.

11 - Grace Jones - She's Lost Control Looking and sounding like that, how could she not go down well at a New Romantic club? Especially covering Joy Division.

12 - Simple Minds - I Travel Pounding dance track from the pompous ones. They were good once, you know!

Other mentions should go to Talking Heads, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Can, The Normal, Fad Gadget, early Human League, Roxy Music, etc, etc.

02 - Kraftwerk - The Model The other main influence on the New Romantics; the godlike genius that is Kraftwerk!

03 - Japan - Quiet Life Japan were slightly ahead of the curve and were making pop dance records before the New Romantics got into a recording studio.

i could have included these classics in mine too... great tracks... but personally id have chosen 'ashes to ashes' over 'sound and vision'.

This selection reminds me of this superb compilation:

As well as being founder members of the definitive New Romantic band Duran Duran, schoolmates Nick & John were DJ's at Birmingham's Road Runner nightclub and this was a compilation of pre-New Romantic songs that they played in the club that helped influence their music & the scene.

I personally think a lot of these acts mentioned have nothing to do with New Romantic - Teardrop Explodes? Come on! A lot of this is new wave or electropop. INXS? Eurythmics?

its of the age, they wore the fashion, teardrops were clearly of the moment a were early eurythmics. i think you can look too hard and catagorise too hard.... besides, new romantics were a fashion statement more then a particular musical style.

in fact they were 'mod' , as 'mods' or 'modernists' were simply 'fashion of the moment'...

i dont get a lot of this 80s obsession of the moment - what is what, it seems that jounos are just dumping everything into one big 80s shaped hole.

now if New Romantic was, like you [and the documentary] said, more confined to that short period of time and a club based fashion thing involving Steve Strange, Rusty Egan and people at the Blitz club and Rum Runner (like an 1980s Nu-Glam movement but with more electronic and disco sounds replacing Roxy Music type glam rock) - then i get it but

(and with reference to the nu-new romantic thread in the indie section) why would janglepop-britfunk dude Nick Heyward want to go clubbing in his big wooly jumpers with a lot of people who look like pieerro the clown??? wouldnt he just over-heat???

actually im confused to whether a lot of this synthpop [uSA: synth-pop], electropop [uSA: electro-pop] stuff

- which seem to be the current obsession for 80 obsessed jounos over the thinking electronic music is an upscale genre of its own.

is it to do just with early synthesizers or does it mean synthetic pop??? and if its to do with those old synths would it not applicable to later on in the decade when there's a whole lot of [better] electronics, sampler and the like to make music with (a post-beatbox  pop???)

I understand why early Depeche Mode would be synthpop but this definition seems to encompass The The, Climie Fisher, Scritti Polliti***, Prefab Sprout, Kajagoogoo****, Devo and Johnny Hates Jazz (who are also Powerpop as well but sound like Maroon 5?!?!?)

is it like britpop just refering to a short period in popular music or would it also include people up to say Eiffel 65 (or is that just europop???)

http://www.ac-reunion.fr/pedagogie/cotamarp/eleve/perso0001/cedric/images/image_eiffel4.jpg

do the americans just think synthpop = 80s English hit music (and in many cases by people we [the good disco hating folk of the u s of a] suspect as homosexual i.e. all the brits** )

Depeche Mode - See You

http://www.clickmusic.com/upload/sparks300.jpg

*using the term unhyphenated like britpop and like the chapter in this book:

** a refernce to the mtv chapter - not read synthpop chapter yet

http://k-punk.abstractdynamics.org/archives/ripitup.jpg

*** the Guardian refered to Heaven 17 as electronic funk - think scritti politti probs better as this describtion, as cant see Roger Troutman, Miles Davis or Mos Def being anything to do with synthpop - maybe turn up on Mantronix vol 2 - the beatbox pop years??

**** having seen too shy 9 million times on the hits in the last week - i would say its more britfunk - the bass sound more prominent than the cheap synths which seem to ruin the chorus

btw has there ever been a PIL vs Par-T-One vs INXS mashup???

and btw the presets - do they sound like a darren hayes electrofantasy of how Max Q should sound???

'new romantics' WERE limited to a very short space in time and was centred around steve stranges 'blitz' club, by the time the general population discovered it, the REAL movement was dead. just about everything post '82 wasnt real new romantic, but the styles and fashions that new romantics brought to the scene lived on through most of the 80's.

so from 82 on id suggest that what you saw and heard were simply 80's fashions, influenced by punk of which nr was an offshoot (mixed somewhat with 'glam' the decade before)

To be honest the number of true New Romantic bands would probably just about reach 10. ABC, Duran Duran, Spandau, Visage, A Flock of Seagulls (maybe?), Japan deffo (and the best). Soft Cell? Adam and the Ants? If them then Bow Wow Wow because they basically shared the same sound? Ultravox around Vienna? Human League.

Can't think of many more.

not really soft cell nor adam! adam in particular was pop that adopted the fashion of the time... well thats how i see him, i think his appeal was more 'teen girl' based then 'adult/student'

very good lists so far with some amazing tracks..but for the moment the first duran duran album works great for me (plus the b sides).
