In Britain, Janet Jackson’s latest album Discipline made a very undistinguished debut at number 63 last week with sales of just 3,914 - but in America it scorches to number one on first week sales of 181,075.

It returns Jackson to the top slot for the sixth time in her career. Among female solo artists, only Barbra Streisand has had more (eight) number ones, while Madonna has also had six.

More importantly, Janet has Jackson family bragging rights over brother Michael, who has had five number ones – although, to be fair, Janet has issued more albums. There’s also good news for Janet on the singles chart. Feedback, the first single from Discipline, isn’t getting as much airplay as she’d like or expect but it sprints 22-7 on the digital songs chart, on sales up 96% at 80,964. That spurs the track to a 53-19 leap on the Hot 100, where it is Ms. Jackson’s first Top 20 entry since Someone To Call My Lover reached number three in 2001. Her last chart single, So Excited, reached number 90 in 2006.

Jackson’s album is one of 21 new entries to the Top 200 this week – the highest tally thus far in 2008. Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah: Part One (4th World War) arrives at number two on sales of 123,884, while gangsta rapper Webbie’s Savage Life 2 enters at number four on sales of 72,497, beating the number eight entry/peak of his 2005 debut, Savage Life. Meanwhile, the soundtrack to the Irish film Once – featuring the Oscar-winning Falling Slowly by Frames leader Glen Hansard and Czech singer/actress Markéta Irglová – explodes 31-7 on sales of 46,781.

As the memory of the Grammy Awards fades, Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black sips 3-10 on sales of 37,507. Released in America exactly a year ago, it has now sold 1,738,226 copies.

Winehouse is way ahead of the rest of the Brit pack. Other albums by UK acts in the top half of the chart are Radiohead’s In Rainbows (down 29-46), Led Zeppelin’s Mothership (67-79), Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocketful Of Sunshine (72-92) Sarah Brightman’s Symphony (71-93) and Goldfrapp’s Seventh Tree.

The only new entry on the chart this week by a British act, Seventh Tree debuts at number 48 on sales of 14,871. Goldfrapp’s only previous US chart entry, Supernature, reached number 138 in 2005.

While Atlanta resident Janet Jackson takes care of the album chart title, fellow city slicker Usher boots Flo-Rida’s Low off the top of the Hot 100 after a 10 week residency. One of the fastest growing songs on US radio, Usher’s new single Love In This Club was made available for download last week, and surged to a first week sale of 197,966 – less than the more optimistic industry projections of 240,000 but more than enough to ensure it explodes 51-1 on the chart. That’s the third biggest move to number one in chart history, and provides Usher with his eighth career number one.

Meanwhile, Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love enjoys a 41% hike in download sales to 40,249. As a result, it leaps 41-21 on the digital songs list and 62-41 on the Hot 100, where it is now the top song by a British act, overtaking Natasha Bedingfield’s Love Like This collaboration with Sean Kingston, which ebbs 32-42. It’s not all bad news for Bedingfield, however, as Pocketful Of Sunshine, the title track of her album, re-enters the chart at number 94. Love Like This peaked at number 11, and it’s an illustration of how healthy the download scene is that despite missing the Top 10, it has sold 982,933 copies, and will certainly surpass the million mark within the next few days.

1. Barbra - 8 US #1's

2. Madonna & Jan - 6 US #1's

3. Mariah - 5 US #1's

Mariah and Janet could very wel tie when Mariah releases her new CD next month. Madonna could possibly top both of them with a 7th US #1 if Hard Candy makes it :)

But its big up to the ladies......all 4 of em..including Babs have more #1 albums than Micheal....guuuurl power man!!!
