March 9, 200817 yr Been noticing that the ESC entries are short. Is there some ruling that says must be like only 3 minutes or something? yeah all eurovision songs can be a max length of 3mins
March 9, 200817 yr yeah all eurovision songs can be a max length of 3mins No - they have to be three minutes on the night. I've got examples (Germany 01 and France 02) which are more than three minutes (France 02 is just over four minutes long).
March 9, 200817 yr Author yeah all eurovision songs can be a max length of 3mins That greatly explains the lack of credibility of ESC then, as longer songs equals more credibility.
March 9, 200817 yr That greatly explains the lack of credibility of ESC then, as longer songs equals more credibility. Hardly Ricky. A song is a song, no matter what length it is. British people don't see Eurovision songs as credible because they think it's all Europop... nothing to do with the length. And aside from the UK and Ireland a few other places, Eurovision is quite credible anyway.

British people don't see Eurovision songs as credible because they think it's all Europop... nothing to do with the length. And aside from the UK and Ireland a few other places, Eurovision is quite credible anyway. Take a look at the best loved songs David. You'll notice the one thing that's odd... the list if full of many long songs. Exceptionally so, and while there are a few less then 4 minutes it's the exception. All this against a background of music market producing singles normally below 4 minutes. Examples. Queen Bohemian Rhapsody 5:55 Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven 8:02 Beatles Hey Jude 7:05 Eagles Hotel California 6:31 The Verve Bitter Sweet Symphony 5:58 Meatloaf Bat out of Hell 9:54 New Order Blue Monday 7:29 Many a Radio DJ have realised the situation when playing the UK's most loved songs.
March 9, 200817 yr They are a few, yes, but I am sure that just as many, if not more, of the "best loved songs" are under three minutes long. Take the Beatles for example. Aside from 'Hey Jude', nearly all of their songs are under three minutes. Hardly an "un-credible" band there...
March 9, 200817 yr No - they have to be three minutes on the night. I've got examples (Germany 01 and France 02) which are more than three minutes (France 02 is just over four minutes long). Shorter versions of that song were performed at the event in other to obey that rule. The 3 minutes rule (with 10 second tolerance over and under it) was stated in 1958 after in the ESC 1957, the UK song was only 1:15 minutes long and Italy's song was almost 6 minutes.

March 10, 200817 yr If a songwriter can't write a good song in 3 minutes he's not worth a penny. Fact!
March 10, 200817 yr Although now the rule is more strict and they can't be a second over 3 minutes, since the live broadcast is so strictly timed If I remember rightly, didn't Greece face disqualification in 1998 due to their song lasting 3:01 (or similar) in the rehearsals?
March 10, 200817 yr If I remember rightly, didn't Greece face disqualification in 1998 due to their song lasting 3:01 (or similar) in the rehearsals? I vaguely remember that. Obviously it was more of a problem in 1998 when the orchestra was still around and the music was completely live. Now the 3 minute versions are submitted to the head of delegations meeting in March, so they are strictly edited way in advance.
March 10, 200817 yr I didn't know it was so strict. :o Can't they even be like a second or two shorter?
March 10, 200817 yr I didn't know it was so strict. :o Can't they even be like a second or two shorter? of course you can go with 1.20 song (as Spian has now tho they say they'll make ot longer :puke2:  ) just not a second over 3 minutes ;)
March 10, 200817 yr of course you can go with 1.20 song (as Spian has now tho they say they'll make ot longer :puke2:  ) just not a second over 3 minutes ;) Oh yeah of course... I thought I'd just downloaded some incomplete file for that!
